The Daily Sentinel March 9,2005 By Beth Sergent The Meigs County Chamber of Commerce was introduced to Chautauqua at their "business minded" luncheon, held Tuesday at the Wild Horse Café. Chautaqua is a Native American word describing the shape of Lake Chautaqua in New York, the one-time site of educational lectures and theater. Chautaqua's lectures and theater productions have been modernized to create a "a gathering" of living history, according to Fran Tiberzio, director of public relations for the Ohio Humanities Council, who spoke to chamber members about the upcoming event, to be held in July in Chester. Tiberzio said her organization is Ohio's version of the National Endowment for the Humanities and has picked Meigs County as the location of their latest Chautaqua, which will focus on "The Roaring Twenties." The Chautaqua willl take place jly 12-16 at the Chester Commons in Chester. The Ohio Humanities Council will provide a tend and 500 chairs for the event that is estimated to cost $50,000. Actors will portray notable historical figures, inclding Henry Ford, Babe Ruth, Zora Neale Hurston, John Dillinger, and Zelda Fitzgerald.
Well, no I don't have a date, I just wanted to browse. Thanks anyway. Diane
Hi folks, I met a person on another board that was asking if there were seperate message boards or lists for just Black heritage in Southern Ohio. Anyone know of any? Debra
Henny, thank you very very much for your thoughtful consideration. I just have to find the correct spelling they used for census, et cetera. I know the father was listed as Robert Gearing in 1880 in Ohio Twn, Gallia County, so just have to go on from there. Thanks again for your looking that up. Your thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated. Julie Gerren

Hi List, I know the older newspapers are hard to find but are there any more recent Gallia newspapers available online say from the 1930s? Thanks, Diane
I realize this is an error by the author of this newspaper article rather than the person who put it on the list, but I thought it should be made clear that the original Chautauqua Institute in western NY is alive and well rather than "the one-time site . . .." It's no big deal, but as a good western NYorker, I didn't want to lose any possible tourists who might think the original Chautauqua Institute is out of business. ;)Exporting the idea of Chautauqua is a great idea. The original Chautauqua Institute isn't a one-time event. It continues to be a place with hotels and cottages where you can stay and there are performances and lectures by nationally known musicians, speakers, and groups as well as workshops for attendees, recreational opportunities, and performances by "lesser lights" as well. It's a kind of old-fashioned retreat and is open all summer. Presidential candidates have used it to prepare for debates. So by all means, attend the Meigs Co. event and then . . . come on down! Julie, I spent some time at the court house yesterday afternoon. I thought perhaps your Washington Geren in Clay, OH might have meant Clay Twp., Gallia Co. since you knew they were here at one time. There is no probate or death record for him in 1893. Nor are there any of the other Gerren deaths through 1899 recorded here. Henny Evans > >
Huge favor...while you're looking for that, could you also please keep your eyes open for an obit. of Amy York? She was Sanford's wife. By the census records, she had to have died between 1830 and 1840. Her maiden name was Cooley. Joanne, Sorry I've been off line a few days thus I'm late on the James McCall discussion.I have no further information on Thomas McCall, b.abt 1740, d. abt 1782, and wife Sally Sarah Proctor, than was found in the book "The McCall Family of Gallia County" written by Jack E. Nida in 1942. I have also had a problem proving James C. McCall had a son James McCall born in Gallia County 1806. To my knowledge, no one has proven that connection for First Families of Gallia CountyHave you any suggestions? We corresponded briefly back in 2001. My line is: Mother Bessie Lucinda McCall White, daughter of Arthur McCall, son of James Henry, son of Alexander, son of James, son of James, son of Thomas. Marge White Gigante
LOL, glad to help. I have been trying to find this particular Ella in any other record since she seems to have come in to take care of the family and my ggfather Myrton --I am not sure how she is related to the family and I haven't been able to find her anywhere else. Ditto for Melissa who shows up in 1880 as head of the household. Diane
