His age is 94. Last Saturday morning Nora McQuaid the sixteen-year-old daugter (sic) of Perry McQuaid, a poor man living just above Gallipolis, was attacked by a negro brute while hoeing in her father's truck patch, near their home, and brutally outraged. The fiend came out of a corn patch behind her and threw his coat over her head and thus stifled her cries. Accomplishing his purpose he took to the woods. Inside of an hour officers and a posse were in pursuit, but up to our latest advices at the time of writing this he had not been caught, but he is very sure to be and almost especially sure to be hanged by the indignant citizens when he is. Since the foregoing was in type the black accursdral (sic), who proves to be one William Frenaro, alias Wm. Hanna, was arrested at Point Pleasant, West Va. where he is held in jail till the public excitement at Gallipolis cools down.

Professor Albanus Avery Moulton, ex-President of Rio Grande College, Gallia county, died at his home near Pueblo, Colorado, on the twenty- third of June. His body will be brought to Rio Grande for burial. A heavy rain, wind and thunderstorm passed over Gallipolis, last Saturday evening about 6:40. Lightning struck two business houses and one dwelling, setting the latter on fire, but it was extinguished without much damage. The Gallipolis Journal says: The plea of insanity will be urged in Dr. Hoy's behalf for the shooting of Huskins, the colored girl, at Point Pleasant, one week ago last Saturday. His wife has withdrawn her suit for divorce, and it is said that hundreds will testify that he has been wrong for a long time. At Kyger, Gallia county, it was found necessary after the present administration came into power, to get a Democrat from a distance to serve as Postmaster, there not being a member of that party in the village. This official has just been arrested for embezzling the funds of the post office, though the latter had before been continuously in charge of a Republican for twenty-five years without a cent being found missing.

Would anyone be willing to look up an estate sale at the courthouse? And post the information. It is the estate sale of John Cooper dated Oct 16, 1862. Diane
If it has a case number like C-5643 or something like that... then it is at the historical society. We house the wills from 1803 to 1946. I will do that for you. I will look it up in the index and find the information for you. You should purchase the Newspaper book from the Society as there are 20 references to Gates in the index. There are also 7 Gates listed in the Wills & Estates Book and 27 Gates mentioned in the Index to the History of Gallia County. I also live in Florida and these three sources have helped me tremendously. I refer to them often. Karen Ft. Myers, FL

Thanks list ---I really appreciate the information. I have been trying to connect my direct ancester James (born about 1812) with Peter (Born 1820) and I think this will information has made the "start" of that connection real. It would also explain the repeat of the Peter name in both James & Peter's family lines. Peter's Civil War information says he was born in Gallia County so can for the moment, at least, assume that James who is listed as being born in Ohio was born in Gallia County too. This "tidbit" has certainly made my day and from one genealogist to others----I truly THANK YOU !!!!! F.K. Brown

Thank you very much Sharon. Besides the smeary type of some of these newspaper prints, I have to use a dictionary for some of the words. I could not find this word so I am glad you let me know. Do you know what the exact meaning of this word is? Thanks, Joyce In a message dated 3/13/2005 12:19:22 P.M.
