Transcribed by Joyce Robinson Athens Messenger November 22, 1888 GALLIA On Wednesday evening of last week, as Myrtle Hively, the seventeen- year-old daughter of an estimable farmer of Harrison township, Gallia county, was returning from milking cows, she was assaulted by a man who said he had been waiting for her. Angered by her resistance and threats to expose him, he drew a knife and cut a gash in her throat that will probably be fatal, and then fled. The girl made her way home and fell screaming and bathed in blood in her mother's arms. Several neighbors rushed in -- among them Benjamin McKinley, who Myrtle immediately pointed out as her assailant. "My God, Myrtle, you don't accuse me." he cried, but she insisted that he was the man. McKinley spent several hours praying, yelling and acting crazy. If caught he will be lynched.

At Gallipolis last Saturday night in Shartz's saloon, Frank Maige, a young man while under the influence of liquor shot at Sam Frank, son of Leopold Frank, with a shot gun, a part of the load entered Sam's left hand and injured it to such an extent that the third and fourth fingers and a part of the hand required amputation.
I had the same thing happen to me. I had been looking for the Will of Henry Fee. My cousin had seen the will and taken it down in shorthand. She went back to the courthouse looking for it and could not find it... missing. When the book was done, the will was missing.. still. One day at the historical society I was looking in the filing cabinet of cases and found his case in the file cabinet. It could have been missing when the book was done. Just like Henry's estate papers, Do you have the number of the case? I will look and see if it is in the box where it should be. We are keeping track of the mistakes that are made and hope to clear them up when we do reprint it. Is it possible that a will was recorded at the courthouse and a copy did not make it into the book? Thank you very much. Karen Karen, I am pretty sure that my ancestor, George M. Chapman's will was not included in the book. His will was signed March 15, 1882 and probated in April 1883. I have a copy of his will which my sister located at the Gallia Courthouse at least 20 years ago. ==== OHGALLIA Mailing List ==== If you want to unsubscribe to the list, send an email to OHGALLIA-L-REQUEST@rootsweb.com with the word unsubscribe in the text of the email. Transcribed by Joyce Robinson Athens Messenger August 16, 1888 GALLIA Mrs. Mary Ball, of Cheshire, aged 92 years, 7 months and 8 days, died last week in the Athens Asylum. The Gallipolis creamery has again gone into operation, and is now turning out about 1,200 pounds of choice butter per week. A party of Gallipolis wheelmen made a trip to Niagara Falls, wheeling most of the way up, but were content to come back by railroad. Measles have been let loose again over in Gallia county, and some of the people of Cheshire and Morgan townships have been suffering from that disease. At Cheshire last Sunday night a wind and hail-storm broke window glass in nearly every house in the village. It was rumored that a woman was killed, although the statement has not been verified. Last Friday evening about 6 o'clock W. T. Bayes, of Winfield, W. Va., late a member of Company D, Seventh West Virginia Cavalry, who had been attending the soldiers' reunion at Gallipolis, went into a saloon there bought a sandwich and sat down to eat it. The barkeeper paid no attention to him for some time, but noticing that he was very still, went to him and found him dead in his chair. It is supposed that he died of heart disease.

Many Gallia county Democrats have made known their intention of voting the Republican ticket. At the Park Central Hotel, in Gallipolis, recently, Mr. Wm. Spencer was married to Miss Lulu Price. The recent assignment of the firm of Broseus & Crane, of Gallipolis, created quite a stir in business circles of that city. The Gallipolis Bulletin says that Jacob Riggs of that county threshed an average of thirty-seven bushels per acre of wheat from a ten acre field. Major Neal, of the Anchor Mills, of Gallipolis, has, says the Bulletin, received nearly 10,000 bushels of new wheat. The price paid averaged from 75 to 78 cents per bushel. Mr. John Swords, of Crown City, and one of the prominent Democrats of Guyan township, says that his party has left him and he will support Harrison, Morton, and protection, and has joined the Harrison and Morton Club of Gallipolis. David Call, going home from Gallipolis Thursday night, was, says the Bulletin of that city, attacked by a ferocious bull. The bull knocked his horse down and threw Mr. Call in the creek, nearly breaking his leg. Then the ferocious animal concluded to take vengence (sic) on the saddle that lay in the road. The horse got away and after the bull left Mr. Call crawled out of the water and called for help. He is at present at Anthony Day's unable to be moved.
After reading these postings, I have to ask a question about this John Cooper. Is he the one who was born abt 1815 in Maryland, according to the 1860 census and listed with his wife Letha? Does anyone have an idea as to his parents? Cunningham Sample Cooper was in Gallia county in the 1820's and I wonder if he could be a son of C. S. Cooper. C. S. Cooper had a son b. 1813 that we have no record on. Anyone have any ideas? The first name after Letha, who is later called Ella in the 1870 census. Looks to be like a nickname maybe, Arusal, the second is Ayua, but later a person the same as 14 in 1860 then 24 in 1870 is Eliza. Karen, If a person died without a will, I guess the family divide things up. I am not exactly sure . I do know that the Will and Estate book does have a few mistakes in it. They will be corrected when it is published again.... But I think that it is safe to say thatit is correct enough and the only thing that we have to go by. Does anyone have record of an Amos R. Stone? He is the sibling of my gggreatgrandfather, Simeon C. Stone. I have not been able to find any record of him past 1900. His mother was Eunice Swick who was married 1) Kinsey Stone and then to 2) Wilson A. Harding. I do not know if he was in WWI, died young, ever married, or anything! So, any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Marylou Hill
I would say that holds true today! The Meigs County Telegraph says: The Gallipolis people never do anything by halves. They run under high pressure, and when they start out to have a soldiers' reunion it will undoubtedly be the biggest and best one within reach. The hospitality will be unbounded, and the enthusiasm will be immense. When, the Galliputs take hold of a movement they go in unanimously, work with all their might, and all deserters are shot at daybreak. It will be a big affair.
I am looking for any information on the children of Wilsena Prose-Campbell-Shaw-Malone. Wilsena's daughter Phebe married Richard Malone. Phebe had a brother John E. Campbell, born approx. 1863, Gallia County, Ohio and sister, Sarah Campbell, born 1871, Gallia County, Ohio. I would like to find out any information on John and Sarah's spouses, children, etc. Thank you for any assistance. Denise Ashleman saultz@bellsouth.net

Transcribed without making changes to spelling and grammar. Transcribed by Joyce Robinson Athens Messenger July 26, 1888 GALLIA Mr. Reuben Graham, of Gallipolis, who is 82 and who seems to have kept run of the matter, says the locusts are due here next season. The dates of the Gallia County Fair, this year very nearly coincide with those of the Athens County Fair, being Aug. 30th and 31st, and Sept. 1st. The soldiers' reunion that comes on August 8 and 9 at Gallipolis promises to be a grand success. There will be the largest crowd there, at that time ever seen in that city, unless all prognostications fail. The programme (sic) will be an excellent one, and will be as extensive and magnificent as the ability of the united forces can make it, several prominent speakers from a distance will be there. Speaking of the approaching Soldiers' reunion at Gallipolis, the Meigs County Telegraph says: The Gallipolis people never do anything by halves. At the Gallipolis and vicinity there are twenty-eight old veterans who voted for General W. H. Harrison in 1840, and will vote for General Ben Harrison, if spared until November. Their names are: Asa Bradbury, Isaac Fitch, John Adkinson, T. P. Magnet, Jacob Gross, Wm. Waddell, Thomas Brown, D. C. Cowden, Caleb Moon, A. R. Martindale, Andrew Brown, Emory Bailey, Wm. Symes, Wm. S. Summers, Joseph Druillard, Wm. T. Stegar, John Varney, Jesse Ingles, Wm. Nash, W. D. Rose, J. M. McCormick, James Gatewood, Reuben Graham, Samuel Huff, George Harrison, George Seui(l)er?, James Harker and J. G. Damron. These old veterans propose to organize under the name of "The Silver Grays."
