    3. I have not done a lot of research on the Grueser line. Am starting. My father-in -law said 3 brothers came from Germany and settled in this area. That is where the line started. There was a Richard but do not know who he married. Can find out though. Thanks. My great grandfather died in Gallia County without a will in 1863. State law then decides how the estate is divided. Generally the wife's dower amounts to about one-third, and then two-thirds is divided among the children. Even with no will there should be probate records. I wrote to the probate court and obtained the complete probate records, which contained a wealth of genealogical material. That was one of the proofs that proved my descent that allowed me to join First Families.

Chapman's will was not included in the book. His will was signed March 15, 1882 and probated in April 1883. I have a copy of his will which my sister located at the Gallia Courthouse at least 20 years ago.

    2. My apologies to those reading my posts. I'm tired tonight and not thinking AT All. Rebecca would be 20 and most likely married in 1860, same with Elenor, 18. The others missing Charlotte & Mertain weren't even born yet, (Double Duh on me) maybe Franklin died an infant.

They would have all been pretty young still, where are they? Did all of these children survive until adulthood? Maybe that is why they are missing. Or old enough to be married out. 3. Karen, Unfortunately, many people just didn't leave a will and many still don't today. That is a problem when trying to prove ancestors during that time frame. Early census records list the head of the house and the number of people in the household but no names. I know from the census records I have family members in Gallia County but they didn't seem to feel they need a will. Then you need to find other sources, family records, bible records, church records, even old letters can help, tombstones.Sometimes we just hit a dead end that an answer may never be found but that is what makes genealogy so interesting. You have to be a detective and search out all the clues and hope you find something and sometimes it is in a place you never expect. Hardesty's may also show the family was in the area but this is just a family history and may lineage societies will not accept this as proof. This is why so many lineage societies are hard to join. I know it is frustrating because I have been trying to prove one family for years with very little luck. I know they were here, they just didn't leave enough proof. Marjorie L.
