    3. Remember when researching your early pioneers that they followed what "highways" they had and there is a great one between Charleston and Gallipolis, the Kanawa River and the Ohio River. Many of the early settlers came from Columbiana County, which I think might have been a stopping off place en route down the river, some stayed a generation or two and then the younger ones followed the river on down...... Even from Washington County, Pa, one might think going overland would be easier, and it would be by today's standards, but "in the day" it was easier from there to follow the river highways...... 3. The marriage is recorded in Gallia Co. It's at the court house if you need me to get it for you or you can write directly to Probate Ct. It should have parents' info and ages, even if wrong, on them, but probably no details. 1. John Cooper Will.
    2. cheryl enyart
    3. I did some looking up today at the society for John Cooper's wil. Here is what I have abstracted. Civil Journal 1 page 400 Oct 16, 1862 Alethea Cooper was the administrator of the will but she relinquished her right and Jacob D. White was named the administrator, Appraiser were given and the personal property of John Cooper ,deceased was appraised. In the will packet, we find evidence that Jacob D. White failed to administor the will and a new administrator was assigned by the court.. but the date skips from 1862 to 1886. It is evident by looking at the papers that the problem was a piece of land that needed to be divided evenly, The will itself does not state who should get what. The following people bring suit against the administrator. Rebecca White and husband Jacob D. White, Ellen Harrington and husband Frank Harrington, Sarah Friebaugh and husband Robert Friebaugh, Mary Friebaugh and husband Samuel Friebaugh. Clayton Cooper, Merton Cooper, Lottie Betz (no husband mentioned) and the two minors, Alonzo and Melissa Cooper. Filed Mar. 16, 1886. Clayton has moved to Dakota Territory , and Mary Friebaugh is listed as living somewhere in WV. There are papers , without a date, that say Alonzo and Melissa, being minors under the age of 14 are appointed a guardian-- J. Floyd Chapman. No date on this filing, although I imagine that it is nearer to 1863 The suit over the land is for land, Section# 6, Town#4, Range #15, in the Ohio Co. Purchase. In another paper the administrator interviews people about the property and all are in agreement that the property should be sold privately and the profits to pay for funeral and expenses and then to be divide among the following: Rebecca White, Ellen Harrington, Alonzo Cooper, (now living with Ellen Harrington), Sarah Friebaugh,John C. Cooper, Merton Cooper, Lottie Betz, and Melissa Cooper, now living with Lottie Betz. I did not find a paper that expressed how much each person received. I also did not see where Aleathea received anything from the sale But the last date on the papers was May of 1886 . If you would like the file copied and sent to you please email me privately and I will see that you get it. trayne1837inc@yahoo.com It was asked that the info be put to the list. This is what I abstracted to give everyone an idea of what was in the will. The creamery has been a complete success in Gallia county. About twenty years ago while some Eastern capitalists were boring for coal on the farm of John Varney, near Rio Grande, Gallia county, at the depth of about 840? feet they struck natural gas, which escaped with great pressure until the tubing fell down beyond reach. Since that time the gas escapes in the waters of the Raccoon. When the creek is frozen in other places there are always openings where the gas escapes and skaters frequently fire the escaping gas.

    1. Moses Gates's will and their church membership
    2. I would like to know if someone can help me find my ggg grandfather's will. In the next Census after he died, I see that his son, Daniel Haskell Gates, was quite wealthy. Also, I wonder what church they attended? I think his wife, my ggg grandmother, Harriet Balzel Gates, was of German descent and Moses is English, through and through. Later on, many of Moses and Harriet's children were Universalists. Thanks very much! Sharon Lee Gates

    2. Joyce, I think it is interesting that my John Cooper who died sometime in 1861 or 1862 in Gallipolis named his children in such a similar pattern as Cunningham Sample and Eliza did. Unfortunately with such a common name as John Cooper I am not sure how we can prove that this is indeed Cunningham's son. Personally I think that he probably is, based on the names and the circumstances. Do you have the Coopers back further? Is it posted somewhere? How far back have you been able to trace them? Do you know where in Germany Eliza was born? Geneology-just when I was going to give up I get clues that gives me the fever again! Diane

    3. Diane Cunningham Sample Cooper was born in 1788 in the York Co., PA area...in what was at that time probably considered Maryland. He was the son of John Cooper and Amelia Sample. His line goes back two more generations in York County. Cunningham seems to have moved between MD and PA during the first years of his marriage. In 1810 he was in Dauphine Co., PA, in 1820 he was in Washington Co., MD, in 1830 he was in Columbiana Co., Oh and in 1840 he was in Gallia Co., Ohio. By 1843 he had moved to Van Buren Co., Iowa. He died in California in 1864. Cunnningham was married 3 times, the first om 1808 to Eliza Young, the second in 1827 to Elizabeth Adams and the last time in 1849 to Elizabeth Sawer Stagers. Between his three wives he had 15 kids. I will send those in the next email.
