Cheryl, I have just a couple of things to say, and then I am done with this back and forth nonsense. I am, and have always been, my own person. I am intelligent enough not to be in anyone's clutches; however, I do not believe Henny has malicious intentions with regard to the charter that she established for the Gallia County Genealogical Society, Chapter of OGS in 1983, Inc. or not. I don't know who will be eating crow, but I hope they pluck the feathers first. Pat Compton You really think it is a rumor. Henny's got you fooled too. I thought you were much smarter than that to have been pulled into her clutches. Cheryl Pcomptone@wmconnect.com wrote: > Yes Marian your letter about the help event was really informational. Hi Rachel, I don't have Sarah Edwards in my files, but she could very well be part of the Rees family since I have little research on them. Thank you for asking. Karen

Is your interest in Ohio River riverboats just related to Gallia County or to the river in general? My great-grandfather, Henry Wise, was a Gallia County resident, but his brother, Westly Wise was a riverboat pilot from Belmont County, who was killed in a boiler explosion on the river in 1879. Would you have any information about this incident, like the name of the boat etc.?
I have joined both the societies; I have no idea on the list who is with which society. Do those communicating on the list belong to both groups or just the Gallia Co. G. Soc? I have been working with Henny Evans and love the effort she puts in. She is so kind and gracious. I am confused by the two groups, however. I am really excited about the Settlers and Builders. Here is an opportunity for those of us who are not able to solidly prove an certain ancestor here by 1820. I know that I have several on my paternal side that I can prove solidly that they were here in 1830, and suspicion early existence but not able to prove. Now I will be able to at least register them as Gallia County Settlers and Builders. Mary Lee Davis Marchi , Marjorie Wood and myself are very willing to help you in anyway we can. You can email us personally , or you may call-740-446-7200, or write us 412 Second Avenue , Gallipolis, Ohio 45631 or email us at histsoc@zoomnet.net. We have records that can help you establish your ancestors where abouts from 1821 to 1860. This is an exciting year at the Gallia County Genealogical Society. We have great things planned for the summer months and for the Gallia County Historical/Genealogical Society's October 8, Banquet. New publications are on the horizon. We would like for you to be a part of this fresh new concept. So, please contact us and let us know how we may help you. This will give us time to check the applications and get the information printed for the programs. If an ancestor has been proved for First Families in the past we will accept them but because many of these files have insufficient and uncompleted documentation and we will strive to help you find other sources of proof for future generations and to possible help with other lineage societies. The Civil War and Settlers and Builder Society will have stricter rules as to what is accepted. We will only take Family History books that have been documented and written family histories will require additional documentation. Applications can be picked up at the Society office at 412 Second Avenue, Gallipolis, Ohio 45631. The applications can also be printed from forms from our website, www.gchags.com We will also mail application to you if you contact the office or email me privately. The banquet this year will be October 8, 2005 at Grace United Methodist Church and you do not need an ancestor to attend. The banquet is to honor our First Family, Civil War Soldiers and Settlers & Builders and we would like everyone to help in the celebration. If you would like more on this weekend please contact the office or me privately and we will send you a packet. SOMETHING NEW! We will start accepting applications to the Gallia County Settlers & Builders! These ancestors will also be recognized at this Banquet. This will work on the same principle the OGS Settlers & Builders with the ancestor living in Gallia County between 1 January 1821 and 31 December 1860. The Applications are not online for this society but are at the Society office at 412 Second Avenue. Remember this is the first year for this group so plan to be a part of this new society! If you need help with finding information on an ancestor please contact Mary Lee Marchi, Director for the Gallia County Historical & Genealogical Society or any member of the society as we have many individuals that are more than happy to help with researching. Yes, Sharon Washington Co. has some fine information on the web and at the library in Marietta.. Also if anyone is interested , I found by using Alice, the OU library online catalog, that they have some wonderful books , that I saw and used at the State Library of Virginia, last May and at the Allen County Library at Ft Wayne, Ind... 2 summers ago. It is really nice to know that Marietta and Athens have research material that our library does not have and are within reach. Wow what a list of Welsh names. When you read one that wasn't it was a suprise. Thanks for the post. Ginny
Karen- I realize this is a long shot, but thought I'd give it a try. Inthe Wellston article covering the Rees anniversery, a Mrs. Sarah Edwards from Gallia County is mentioned. Have you ever run across her in your research? I think she may be one of mine. Rachel
Thank you for asking about my connection with the Rees family. Charles & Elizabeth REES had 5 children: Charles, Elizabeth, David, John, and George. David REES married Ann Sabina EVANS and they had 6 children: Mary, Elizabeth, Ann, Ella, Ellen, and David. Mary REES married Charles Newberry GOOCH and they had 6 children: Bess, Edith, Deborah, Robert, Roma, and Gladys. Deborah was my grandmother. All of these people lived in Raccoon Twp. I know so little about the REES family; my grandmother was very proud of her Welsh heritage, too. Here is something that might be of interest to you: From my grandmother's Bible have a Copy of invitation to celebration of the Golden Wedding Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. George Reese (note added "e") July 8, 1904 in Glen Roy, Ohio. 1854 to 1904. From Wellston Telegram Newspaper, Wellston, Ohio "Anniversary for Mr. and Mrs. George Rees Celebrated Over 150 Friends attended Come from many places to participate in observance of the occasion Mr. and Mrs. George Rees of Glen Roy celebrated the golden anniversary of their marriage Friday. On a summer's day, a half century ago they plighted their troth and were made man and wife. Of the joyous company who were at their wedding they alone have survived the passing years. But on Friday friends and acquaintances of later days gathered at their pleasant home in Glen Roy to offer their good wishes and bear testimony of their love and esteem. The features of the wedding anniversary were the costly presents given Mr. and Mrs. Rees and the elaborate dinner served to friends. Altogether one hundred and sixty-one people sat down to dinner. The first table was seated at 11 o'clock and the dinner was not over until 4:30. Everything in and out of season was there. The spread added greatly to the enjoyment and good cheer of the occasion. Thomas Cole of Glen Roy presided and welcomed the guests. He read an original poem, 'Memory.' dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Rees and recalling the days when their love was young. Mr. Cole is an old friend of the family and to him The Telegram is largely indebted for its report. The Rev P E White of the ME Church at Coalton in a few well chosen words in behalf of the friends of Glen Roy presented Mr. and Mrs. Rees a fine leather couch and $5 in gold. Mr. Rees a gold headed cane and Mrs. Rees a gold headed silk umbrella. Rev WP Cherrington of Jackson, speaking for the friends of Jackson, presented a substantial sum of money in gold. Many other presents were received. Little Barbara Dawson, a granddaughter, and Elizabeth Jones, a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. DE Jones, recited several selections. WAS BORN IN WALES Mr. and Mrs. George Rees are the oldest residents of Glen Roy having moved there in 1873. Mr. Rees was born in 1830 in Nantyglo, South Wales and was the son of Charles and Elizabeth Rees. He came to this country with his parents when only six weeks old. They settled in Pottsville, Pa. and when he was nine years old, removed to Gallia County. After coming to manhood there he followed the river as a steamboatman. He was married to Mary Ann, the daughter of David L and Helen Evans in Gallia County July 8, 1854. They moved to Glen Roy in 1873 living in the house now occupied by Henry Prichard. Since coming to this county Mr. Rees was a coal miner. He helped sink the old Milton Furnace shaft the first in the district. Later he worked at the Acorn mine at Glen Roy. He was known in his younger days as a skillful miner who could get out a great deal of coal. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Rees are: Helen, Elizabeth, the wife of Jacob Deckard, Emma, the wife of James Lantz Even, Barbara, the wife of Hedley Dawson, deceased, and John. There are 13 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren." The article goes on to list the guests who attended and the presents received. HUNDREDS OF FRIENDS. Karen, I am going to forward this email to the Gallia County Historical/Genealogical Society and will get back with you Monday privately. I know a researcher who is tied into the Rees clan and has extensive research on them, I will forward her email address to you Monday. I am not sure if she knows about the steamboats, but she just might. I read with interest the discussion about the marine hospital. I was wondering if there could be any connection with the steamboats that went up and down the river after the Civil War. I am researching the Rees family...I think I am the only person on the Internet researching this family! Anyway, the Rees brothers, Charles, David, and John, turned to steamboating after the Civil War. These boys all grew up in Raccoon Twp with their parents, Charles and Elizabeth, and their sister, Elizabeth. David Rees is my great-greatgrandfather. I have look and looked for records about these steamboats, but cannot find anything, yet/ Thanks, Karen Seibert
Cheryl, I wish I can find more. Maybe I can with a name of one of the men but don't know. Joyce In a message dated 3/19/2005 9:37:21 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, trayne1837inc@yahoo.com writes: Joyce, Thank you so much for the information on the Marine Hospital. I have indexed over 1200 men who were patients at the hospital between 1983-1917. I am indexing them by man, riverboat, and captain. This should give us a good idea of what our river system was like. Each of these forms gives the man's name , age, home area, port of the riverboat, and the captain of the boat. It also gives us the color of hair, color of eyes, complexion, height and weight. It gives us a mental picture of what the man looks like. Once the index is done, people can order the form and be able to use this as a part of their ancestor's story. Any and all information is a help. Cheryl Enyart
Regina, Nice to hear from you. I have been working on this now for about a year. It isn't ready for publication yet but I can look and see if they are mentioned. Maybe in the Fall. You must remember that this is a list of rivermen who might have been sick and or injured. If the names don't appear, it isn't that they didn't work... it is that they weren't sick or injured by the job. I will keep the names on my computer and iIF I come up with some other research, I am always looking in the River News columns when I can. I will try and look for them. I will check my list on Monday. Cheryl Regina Smith <ras411934@yahoo.com> wrote: Cheryl, I am very interested in the index that you are working on. I know that several of my Angel ancestors worked on the river, Including my grandfather, Henry Hampton Angel. My father, Curtis (Curt Angel) worked with him, probably as an assistant cook. I know he could not have worked long since he and Mother were married in 1914 when he was 20 years old. They met at Selby's shoe factory in Portsmouth where they were both working. Grandpa Henry Angel was still working on the river when he died in 1927. It is my understanding that they worked for the Green Lines. My great grandmother, Ruth Jane Angel's second husband, James L. Angel also worked on the river boats much earlier than Dad and grandpa, probably in the 1860s-1870s. I also have a postcard that was mailed to my grandma Angel from Henry. There is a picture of two unnamed men on the front. My guess is that one was the captain, the other, perhaps Grandpa. Can you tell me when and how this index will be made available to the OGS members? Thank you so much for all of your hard work and for all of the help that give to list members. Sincerely. I will check my database and see if they were ever in the hospital... Just because I do not have a person does not mean they weren't on the river. It will mean that they were never sick or injured. I will look come Monday. Cheryl Ash689@aol.com wrote:I read with interest the discussion about the marine hospital.
