Sorry--that is Martha Daggett--not Marha. Fingers don't work as fast as the brain today. Joanne Galvin Researching Northup, Hampton, McCall, Phelps, Blake, Daggett, Syler, Berrridge,Plymale, Kinder, Cottrell, Gilbert
David Blake and Marha Daggett were both from Rehoboth, Massachusetts. They married there in July 13, 1785 by Rev. John Ellis. His parents were: Moses Blake of Milton, MA and Sible Fuller of Rehoboth, MA. Martha was the daughter of Israel Daggett of Rehoboth and Frances Bowen. Israel is a descendant of Joseph Daggett, one of the original settlers of Martha's Vineyard who later settled in Rehoboth. Joseph was originally from England.
In the family history that I have, it states that Sarah (Sally) Blake was the first white child born in Marietta. Joanne Galvin Researching Northup, Hampton, McCall, Phelps, Blake, Daggett, Syler, Berrridge,Plymale, Kinder, Cottrell, Gilbert
No, I meant the city of Caldwell. Sorry for not clarifying it.
Sorry I forgot to sign my name to the last post. Continuing, "Mad" Ann Bailey was a scout and spy during the Revolutionary War era who later settled in Harrison Twp. She was well known for her daring feats, skill with a rifle and exert horsemanship. Bernice Borden was a dynamic educator and church leader in the local African-American Community. She taught for more than 40 years in the local school district and was known and respected for pushing young black children to do their best. She was a leader in the Boy Scouts locally and was also nationally known as an educator and church leader. Lillian Mitchell was the daughter of Robert Mitchell who sued the Gallipolis City School district to end its policy of segregation in the early 1900's. She attended Lincoln Colored School in Gallipolis and attend Gallia Academy after it was integrated. She later became the dean of music at Howard University in Washington, DC. Alma Holzer, was the wife of Dr. Charles E. Holzer Sr. and founded the Holzer School of Nursing, which is now based at the University of Rio Grande. Ella Lupton was the first female doctor in Gallia County. She set up practice near the turn of the century between the late 1800's and early 1900's . She died at the age of 99. Hannah Maxon was a Civil War Nurse and considered to be the "Florence Nightingale of Gallia County" She worked at the Civil War hospital that was located at the site of the present day Gallipolis Development Center. Marie Menager was one of the French 500 which settled in Gallipolis in 1790 and was portrayed by one of her descendants. Permila Atwood along with her husband Nehemiah Atwood founded Rio Grande College in 1876. Nehemiah Atwood died in 1869 but Permilia carried on the work of seeing the college become a reality. It is the present day University of Rio Grande. Irene Miles (we did not have a portrayer) but we had found this woman to be very interesting. She was the leader of the Woman's Temperance Union. She waged war against the use of alcohol in Gallia County and helped close several local saloons. This is just a brief history of these woman, more can be found at the Gallia County Historical & Genealogical Society. Marjorie L. Wood
Women's History Month, a couple years ago the French Colony DAR had a wonderful program called the "Gallant Gals of Gallia County" Many of us portrayed women in Gallia County's history. All of the woman we portrayed had a special place in the history of Gallia County. We portrayed, Dr. Ella Lupton, Maybelle McInytre, "Grandma" Emma Caldwell Gatewood, Hannah Maxon, Permila Atwood, "Mad" Ann Bailey, Bernice Borden, Alma Holzer, Lillian Mitchell, Marie Menager. We had also hoped to have Irene Miles. I have a brief history of each. Maybelle Small McInytre was a distant cousin and her husband was a journalist and she was a great business woman managing her husband's career. Their home "Gatewood" is on the historical homes in Gallipolis and it was bought from her grandfather (my gggrandfather) for an anniversary present by her husband Odd McIntyre. Odd died before the renovations were completed I have letters from Maybelle to my great-grandfather who was the foreman overseeing the renovations. I have given a set of these the Gallia County Genealogical Society. "Grandma" Emma Caldwell Gatewood was my great-grandmother and she was known to many through out the country as the "Hiking Grandma" as she was the first woman at the age of 67 (1955) that she hiked the 2050 miles from Georgia to Maine of the Appalachian Trail in one season starting May 3 and ending Sept. 25. She would hike this trail twice more and at the age of 70 she would hike in the Adirondacks in New York and climb six of the highest mountains when she was 70 years old . The amazing thing about Grandma is that she did all of this and many more hikes, at her age and after raising 11 children and divorcing an abusive husband and working hard her entire life to run an farm and raise this family. I have given speeches on Grandma to several organization over the years, I could talk for hours about her as I knew her well, she died in 1973 at the age of 85. I have always believed Grandma was an inspiration to other women like all of the woman our DAR portrayed. I'm sure all of us have some woman in her family that has inspired others maybe without even knowing it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Lee Davis Marchi" <mlmquilt@zoomnet.net> To: <OHGALLIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 20, 2005 10:55 PM Subject: [OHGALLIA-L] Women's History Month > Back to genealogy. > > March is Women's History Month, so does anyone have a unique and fascinating women in their family that lived in Gallia County? She was an animated person. "When she wasn't talking, she was laughing, and always on the go." She and her family didn't run on any schedule. They might not eat dinner till 11:00 P.M. Nan & Sally Jo, According to the Trowbridge Family book Martha Blake that married Philo Trowbridge. This Martha's parents were David and Martha Daggett Blake which you have as Sally (Sarah) Blake's parents. She would have been older than Martha as her birth was 1790 (and you have Sally's as 1787) and Martha was born in Marietta, Ohio but died at Swan Creek, Gallia County. So you might look in the records in Washington County for possibly Sally (Sarah) birth. Most of the Trowbridge family that came from New England came through Washington County and even Athens County before settling in Gallia County. Washington County has a wonderful research library. David and Martha Blake are buried in the Blake Cemetery in Ohio Twp and their tombstones say " immigrated to this state 1785" The following are buried with them, Hannah P., Anselm T., C.B., & Gratia T. There are a few other Blake's in this cemetery but know of the ones you are searching and no Phelps that I can find. My cemetery book for Ohio Twp. is not indexed and it takes longer to find anyone. March is Women's History Month, so does anyone have a unique and fascinating women in their family that lived in Gallia County? Tell us her story. I would like to add to the list that Marjorie posted the name of Sarah Safford Winslow Smith. Sarah is the granddaughter of Robert Safford who cut down the first tree on the site of Gallipolis in 1790. Her grandmother was Catherine Cameron, a member of the French Five Hundred.Sarah was born in 1842 and died in 1929. Sarah was a nurse during the Civil War and served her in Gallia County. She married E.F. Winslow at the close of the war. She became a widow and later married William Smith, from Cabel Co, WV. She died in Proctorville, the last of her immediate family at the age of 87. A Daughters of Union Veterans Tent (DUV) has been started and named after Sarah Safford Smith. Any lady that is a direct decendant of a union veteran may make applications. You may pick up an application at the Gallia County Historical and Genealogical Society or you may contact me . Also, there is a Sons of the Union Veterans (SUV) group that has formed in Gallia County, the Cadot- Blessing Camp #126. Application forms for the SUV are also at the Gallia County Historical and Genealogical Society. Contact them for applications. Hello all - I've posted here before, but not in several years. Thought I'd try again. I'm looking for any information on Cook and Angel families in Gallia Co. before 1850. My ggg-grandfather was James Cook (b. abt 1807, supposedly in NC) who married Mary Angel (b. 1812) in Gallia Co. in 1831. I don't have any info on either of their parents. No Cooks are listed in the 1830 Gallia census. James and Mary appear to have lived in Mason Co. VA (WVA) in the 1840 census, and then they moved to Hamilton Co. IL. I have wondered if James's father might not be the Cornelius Cook listed in the Gallia Co. census in 1820 - he has a son the right age, and there are Angel families nearby. However, I can find no information about this Cornelius Cook. There is a Cornelius Cook descended from the Germanna colony Cooks that some folks have suggested I look into, but the Germanna Cornelius Cook appears to be the one who moved to Shelby Co. IN in the 1820's, and does not match the Cornelius Cook in 1820 Gallia. Others have noted a Cornelius Cook marrying a Suckey Crim in Stokes, NC in 1812. This seems to be the Cornelius Cook who moved to Wayne Co. IN in the 1830's, and also does not match the 1820 Gallia Cornelius Cook. Who would have thought there were so many Cornelius Cooks? Another possibility is the Samuel Cook listed in Gallipolis in the 1840 census. He seems to be the same Samuel Cook listed in Mason Co. VA in 1820 and 1830, but he doesn't seem to have a son who matches my James Cook. Does anyone have any info regarding any of these Cooks?? Is there a list of wills/probate files for Gallia Co? I'd be interested in any COOKs prior to 1850 or so. Similarly, I have no idea who Mary Angel's parents might be, although Berry Angel appears to have a daughter about the right age. Does anyone know anything about the children of Berry Angel, or any of the other Angels in Gallia by the 1830's? Any help appreciated. Nelson, According to Marraige Records 1803-1050 Gallia Co., Ohio compiled by Michael Trowbridge; on page 34 there is a listing for a Samuel Holly marrying a Letty Holly - April 12, 1823 and can be found in Vol. 1, Pg. 121 of the original records. They were married by Ware Long. There is also a listing for a Samuel Holly marrying a Margaret Canterbury, May 18, 1843 and can be found in Vol. 1, Pg. 415 of the original records. Samuel and Margaret were married by J. S. Clark.
