Listers, I recently received this information from another list I belong to: Boston College recently announced it's putting online the "The Search For Missing Friends" column through which Irish immigrants tried to find relatives and friends they'd lost track of. It previously was available only as an eight-volume collection of books. The database is at www.infowanted.bc.edu There was a long article about the ads and the database in the Boston Globe at the following address: < http://www.boston.com/news/education/higher/articles/2005/03/17/the_irish_imm igrant_past_gets_tie_to_today/> FYI: Apparently the Boston Globe article about the database was free only the first day it appeared. When I linked to the Boston Globe address, the article was not free unless you have a subscription with the Boston Globe. Fortunately, you don't need to read the article to use the database. Good luck, Barbara Brown
Louise, Do you have any information on Ann Gilmore, who her parents or siblings were? I have Gilmores in Gallia Co, and I thought the Ralphs were in Meigs Co. Was Ann related to any of the Gilmores in Gallia? Sorry about that oversight...so many names the same....and being new to research can be a liability. It should have read ZEBULON B. LEWIS, son of ZEBULON LEWIS, possibly the son of SAMUEL LEWIS who is possibly the son of WILSON LEWIS. I know our ancestor is listed on the Census as Zebulon B. Lewis and Zebulon Lewis and Zeb. Lewis. I can pinpoint him in Tippecanoe, Indiana in 1850, in Hickory Missouri in 1860 and 1870.. All these Censuses enumerate him as being born in Ohio in 1813 and the names of the children are the same so I feel fairly comfortable with that portion....it is all these others that baffle me Thanks Ray for helping keep me straight I sure need all the help I can get. This is just some of the info. I have about the Blake/Daggett families. If you would like more or have more for me and you think it might be too detailed for this list, feel free to contact me at sallyjoq@yahoo.com At the age of 21, David Blake married Martha Daggett. She was 20. They were married Sept. 3, 1785. Apparently the newly wedded couple left immediately for the "west", as both of their grave markers bear the notation that they came to Ohio in 1785. It was not uncommon in those days for officers to bring their wives along on such posts, and this is presumably what David Blake did. It was at this fort that their first child (Sally Blake) was born on May 7, 1787. According to family tradition, she was the first white child born in what is now Marietta, Ohio. A year later, on April 7, 1788, the flat-boats carrying the colonists from New England who were to found the city of Marietta, arrived. Perhaps after the sale of the home at Campus Martius in 1809, he farmed until he moved to Gallia County in 1817 when, at the age of 53, he left Washington County and came to Gallia County, settling in Ohio Township. In 1819, he purchased a 100 acre "lot" being #588 in Secs. 25, 31, 32, 33 of Twp. #1, Rng. 14 of the Ohio Company purchase. This property is today owned by his descendants and reaches from the river, with its rich bottom to the hills along which the road (Route 7) runs. I am a descendant of Sally Blake and John Phelp's son, Benjamin Phelps. to Joanne: I think our records match pretty well. To Bob: re: Francis M. Blake. I don't have them in my data base. Do you know who his parents were? To Ginny: I don't have a James Blake in my data base either. To Doris: I don't have a MaryJane Blake or a William Roth. You can use your edit browser and find names automatically on the marriage lists. I enjoy reading, however, this saves so much time!!
Judi, In regard to naturalization records, this is a two step process that takes 5 years. You can file your declaration of intent after living in the United States for 2 years. A person then petitions for naturalization after 3 additional years. However, take note that in the early years wives and children were automatically granted citizenship with the man. Any U.S. female citizen that married a foreign national also lost their American citizenship. My husbands grandmother received citizenship due to her father in 1900, however, she made her own application after her marriage and the birth of her four children so that she would have her name, as a citizen, on paper. My Great Grandfather fought in the Civil War and was granted his citizenship due to that, the requirements on men who served in the military are varied by year. You can go to www.archives.gov and find out all of the information. I phoned the Great Falls, Montana Courthouse regarding my husband's Great Grandfather. He worked for the UP.SO. Railroad in the early 1900 in the Territory of Montana and as an Italian immigrant, the railroad required citizenship for employment. I requested, paid for a copy, and received a copy of his original papers. You may want to contact the Botetourt County Clerk and inquire as to any services they may have regarding these records. Check to make sure that the county was founded by that time. ----- Original Message ----- From: <JJwherebee@aol.com> To: <OHGALLIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 22, 2005 3:47 PM Subject: Re: [OHGALLIA-L] Question on records > Hi List, i have never looked for naturlization records or citizen ship > records.
