    3. Pat, The obit says March 18, 1916 one day off isn't bad. I believe that I have Josiah Mc Call's obit also. I had it but not sure where I put it . When I go looking for obits I sometimes see names that people have been talking about... so I make a copy. When I am done with them I turn them over to Alice, who is in charge of our obituary file. I will have to go back into the pile of microfilm papers and see if I can find him.... But I do believe that the obit about Mrs. McCall death in a fire is you Anne Elizabeth Northup McCall. If either of you would like the obit , I scanned it just like it was in the paper. I can send it to you. Just send me a note at trayne1837inc@yahoo.com and I will attach it to my reply. Or anyone interested in this obit. I am trying to compile a file of 1) Civil War Veterans 2) rivermen... these are the two things that I am primarily into... civil war/DUV and Sons &Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen. When the collection gets to be of size I will share with you what I have. 2. Thank you, Henny, that was very nice of you to think of my Baltzell inquiries. So, it would seem that Daniel and Margaret (unknown surname, does anyone know another surname I can add to my genealogy?) Baltzell would be in the First Families category and they got there from Virginia, since that is where Harriet was born, according to every Census record until she died in Charleston, WV at a ripe old age. It seems this information represents a "Life Estate" situation, whereby the property deed is conveyed, but the former owner can live there until he also dies. Is that correct? Of general interest to all on this list, it would be great to know exactly what a "Garden Lot" is. I guess Harriet Baltzell Gates and her husband, Moses Gates, owned a lot and Harriett's brother, Thomas (and wife?) also owned a lot. Is this an old plat of the town of Gallipolis? Who laid it out and when? Does anyone know what is located there now? When I go to Gallipolis on my next trip up north, I would like to see the area where the Gates and Baltzell ancestors lived. I would also like to know where Daniel Baltzell was born (Maryland?) and if he had any contemporaries in his family who lived in Gallipolis township. Where in Virginia was Harriet Baltzell Gates born? Thanks so much to anyone who knows more about these queries. Sharon Lee Gates GATES, BALTZEL In a message dated 3/28/2005 12:01:30 P.M. So, when I was at the court house I took a look at Daniel Baltzell's deeds and found two of interest. In 1837 Daniel and wife Margaret sold to son Thomas Baltzell for $500 part of garden lot 16. Then in 1839 Daniel alone, which implies to me that Margaret had died, sold to Harriet, wife of Moses Gates, for $100 lot 17 except for 33 feet already sold to Thomas Baltzell and also "in consideration of a certain Bond or obligation bearing ? dates herewith, for one thousand dollars, executed by the said Moses Gates, conditioned for my maintenance during my natural life, the receipt of which I hereby knowledge".... Then Harriet would have "her heirs and assigns as an estate of inheritance in fee simple forever" which simply means the property is hers. Nothing here tells me that Harriet is his daughter, but it does show Thomas is definitely a son and that Margaret was Daniel's wife and that she had died between 1837 and 1839. It shows that Moses and Harriet Gates will be taking care of Daniel the rest of his life and that Thomas and Harriet now own adjoining lots once owned by Daniel and Margaret. 3. Hello again, Cheryl, Thanks so much for the McCall obit. I'm sure this is the right McCall, but there are some questions I have that maybe you or another McCall researcher would be able to answer: I the obit, it lists a Theodore Northup as Anne's brother. I don't show that Ann had a bother by that name (altough my info. could most certainly not be complete). I do show that she had a son by the name of Theodore. Also, the obit. lists a surviving daughter by the name of "Mrs. Nelson". If my information is right, I show that Anne and her husband had 2 daughters (and 5 sons) Roena was born in 1860 and died in 1861, so it can't be her. Cora A. McCall was the other daughter (b.1866). I show her husband's name to be, Nelson Thornton. Unless I have that named turned around, that would make Cora, Mrs. Thornton. The obit. states that "Mrs. J. S. McCall, aged nearly 7O years, a resident at the Clay Lick neighborhood in Harrison township, was burned to death at her home Saturday morning, March 18. 1916, between eight and nine o'clock." That agrees with the date of death I had listed for her of March 19, 1916. 1. WAUGH
    2. There are many Waughs in Greenbrier and Pocahontas VA/WV genealogy, as well. The patryonymic is even used as a middle name today there. It is highly likely that your Gallia Waughs would have come from there, either passing through or staying a generation or two. Try those sites! Anyone researching these lines who could fill in info for me or maybe find burial and take a photo. Anything at all I appreciate it. This is such an interesting and so helpful list.
