I have the Addison Cemetery book and there is no Petty's listed in it. I have all the cemetery books if you would want me to look in a different one. .Just a suggestion for all members of this list, the Society or anyone with any information; if you have copies of any part of the missing files, please make copies and send them to the Genealogical and Historical Society in Gallipolis. If everyone works together with files our families have compiled, wills, etc., we can once again have a complete, secure source of reference. Regarding prosecution, yes, I am fairly certain that they could be prosecuted. In cases of burglary, the police tell people to check pawn shops and e-bay. E-Bay has a record of the Sellers and the information on the Seller can be obtained. Rather than be guilty of trafficking of stolen goods, most sellers will divulge the name of the source of the items for sale. The organization or person from whom the material has been stolen could prosecute once the items have been positively identified.
Lois Taylor, I sent your copy of will and death information on Irene Campbell out today by snail mail. Mary Lee Davis Marchi Gallia County Historical/Genealogical Society 412 Second Avenue Gallipolis, Ohio 45631

Well Charlie this falls once again into the copy right issues. The Church filmed this. That changes the format from book to film giving the church copy right to all the materials filmed. They also have to abide by the agreement with the holder of these books that they made, some holders of the material do not want it published. Many places will not give their permission to film the records. Now Charlie, tell the truth. We didn't pick it up off the road, we swiped it off the ice truck (from under the tarp) when the iceman was taking ice into the houses. I must say that we only borrowed the little pieces that were left over after he picked away at the big pieces. We were so small we could hardly reach the bed of the truck. Maybe you did it a little different one block over (LOL). I am going to the courthouse I can get JWBC and JWBD, we have JWBE at the society. I will see what I can find in my notes. It was just such a surprise to seem that name. I believe Hugh's wife, Lucy McAboy, is sister to Rev James McAboy - Baptist turned Presbyterian minister; also an Ohio University Trustee; her brother, Thomas, is listed as a physician. It is a colateral line. We (another researcher and I are working on the McAboys) believe Lucy to be the aunt of Clarissa McAboy. She (Clarissa) married Giles S. Case. He had connections with Case, Sisson and Mathews families in Gallia county. In the Meigs Mortality Schedule for 1850, I found a Lucetta Case, aged 7 (could be 7 months) having died in Aug 1849 of croop. I am trying to connect her to Giles S.Case and his wife Clarissa McAboy. In the Gallia Book of Wills and Estates, there is a listing for Giles Case (JWBE, pg 565). Would these refer to guardianship of minor children? Also, Luther Case (JWBC, pp 465, 570; JWBD pp--- 34. 173,184). What would be the quickest way to get copies of these? Writing directly to the courthouse, or asking someone at the historical society? I know some courthouse's can take months to respnd to requests for copies. Again, thanks for your response to my question. SueEd NY __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Thanks Marjorie, and Cheryl..... I doubt if they were buried elsewhere in Gallia. They had connections in Meigs, Lucy ended up there in 1850 or 60 ; and further back in Athens county. Cheryl, I would be interested in the information you have. Lemuel had a brother, Hugh. Well, in that instance, making copies of something and then offering to sell, I have no problem with it at all. I do remember many of the people along First Avenue, if not all, did own all the way to the river. My aunt and uncle owned property along there and they had a nice garden down the bank. I, too, remember the ice house, and the iceman and his wagon going through town, with children following along behind picking up pieces of ice that feel from the wagon. It sure was nice, on a hot day, to suck on that ice !! Of course, some of us also chewed pieces of hot tar from the roads, as well!!! Who remembers the cards the housewife put in the window telling the iceman how much ice would be needed that day ?? She put it in the window in such a manner that the amount needed would be at the top of the card, thus saving the iceman a trip to the house to inquire. Sue, I have tried despartly to find info on Lemuel Petty. I know that he was intenerant minister. In a copy of Addison township school records he is listed as the guardian for one Solomon Thomas, mygrtgrandfather. Somewhere I have a copy of his minister license. His wife's name was Katura and I know that I have her maiden name written down somewhere. That had in the 1850 census, Lucy, David, Mary I, Catherine and Novel D. At one time I think he was in Springfield Township. I also read somewhere that one of the daughters married a Samuel Thomas, and a son married Elizabeth Thomas, making me believe that maybe these were brother and sister to Solomon. When I find those notes I will send them to you, I am not sure what I have but will share. I am not sure of the trails they might have taken to get over those mountains, but I am sure it was fairly easy.......not easy for them, of course, but relatively easy compared to other ways. I remember about the Monongahela because my 5th great grandfather was Jacob Prickett of "Prickett's Fort" a, now reconstructed, pioneer fort in the area. It is not a state park located in Fairmont, WVA just south of Morgantown. Some of the Morgan's married into the Prickett family. As a matter of fact, most of the Prichard's around Gallia County are probably descended from Jacob as well.............through Prudence Prichard, wife of Gabriel Houck....... If you own the 1874 Atlas, you can see the garden lots in it. Henny > >
Even thought Neil is not interested in seeing the enlarged copy, I sure am! Please email it to me! Or see if there is an appraiser in Gallipolis who uses it and can email it to me. That is how I get my plat maps all the time in my mortgage business! Sharon Lee Gates Apopka, FL GATES, BALTZELL, WARE Neil E. Folsom, CA Thanks for the offer Cheryl, but I have been there and seen the lots. (My great-grandmother's lot is now a gravel parking lot for a tire store) I am interested in whether these were mostly just family vegetable gardens, or if some of them were used for commercial purposes. My great-grandmother's family didn't own any buildings in town, and they lived about 5 miles away in the country. Neil
