Dr. Newton, postmaster at Gallipolis has recently been critically ill. Within the past week, great numbers of wild geese have passed over Gallia county northward bound. Mr. Charles Henking, one of the oldest and worthiest citizens of Gallipolis, suddenly died on Tuesday of last week. A "pome" furnished the editor of Gallipolis Journal by a prisoner in the jail was up to the proper literary standard in everything but "rhyme, grammar, sense, punctuation, capitalization, meter, truth and spelling." The Bulletin says: On Tuesday last the Supreme Court of Ohio decided the long-pending suit of the The First Presbyterian Society of Gallipolis, in connection with the Hocking Presbytery, plaintiff, vs The First Presbyterian Society of Gallipolis, in connection with the Athens Presbytery. The case has long been on the docket -- about twenty years --- in one form or another. Years ago there was much bitterness in our midst about the struggle, and there was scarcely an individual in the community who did not "take sides." It will be noted that after the long and vexatious litigation, the "Old School" has triumphed.

I found the item concerning Katie King to be most interesting and I did a google search and found it even more interesting. Transcribed without making changes to spelling and grammar. Transcribed by Joyce Robinson Athens Messenger March 11, 1875 GALLIA The Gallipolis municipal election promises to be exciting. There is a rumor that spiritualism of the "Katie King" order is gaining a foothold in Ohio township, near Bush's Mill. There have been some twenty additions to the membership of the Presbyterian Church at Gallipolis this winter. At the recent spelling match at Gallipolis Miss Langley was declared the winner of the prize. Gallipolis has petitioned for an enlargement of her boundaries. There will be three terms of court in this county next month : Special session of the Common Pleas April 1st; District Court on the 16th, and regular term of Common Pleas on the 27th. Mrs. Frazier, wife of Alexander Frazier, died at the residence of her husband in Cheshire, after an illness of two days, on the 23d ult. At Cheshire recently, Daniel Mauck, assignee of C. L. Guthrie, auctioned $5,500 worth of notes and accounts for $27.00 -- which amounts to about 1/2 cent on the dollar. "Skunk Hollow Skinnings" is the way "W. L. R." heads his communications to the Gallipolis Journal.
Sharon, I was working on Death Certificates that had been donated to the genealogical society and found a slew of Gates.... while looking I came upon Margaret Wigner Gates. Her husband signed the the form as the informant.... He middle name is MERRILL Gates, it is not your James Madison... While we are talking about DC, BC and Marriage license, if you have some of these certificates and would like to donate them.... They really do help us with research, I was able to help Sharon clarify this Gate's marriage. So, please send us copies of your birth certificates, please none for living decendants, Death certificates and Marriage license... We are finding more and more that these are extremly helpful to our researchers. Thank you Cheryl Enyart Send you certificates to Gallia County Genealogical Society 412 Second Avenue Gallipolis, Ohio 45631 Any questions please call 740-446-7200 or email us at histsoc@zoomnet.net SGates1949@aol.com wrote: Would someone please check this to see if it is my great-great grandfather's marriage? I am not an Angel researcher but the information you have on Wiley Angle's marriage is correct. They were married by John W. Lewis and it can be found in Vol. 7, Pg. 166 of the original records. Transcribed without making changes to spelling and grammar. Transcribed by Joyce Robinson Athens Messenger February 25, 1875 GALLIA There is to be a Board of Trade organized in Gallipolis. The local Board of Health have entered upon measures to prevent the introduction and spread of small pox in Gallipolis. The Journal of last week reports one case in the suburbs of the city. Two coal veins, of fine quality, have been discovered in Harrison township. Judge Cartwright, Judge Guthrie's successor, went upon the Bench, in the court at Gallipolis, immediately after being officially sworn in, on Monday morning of last week. A new post-office has been established at Flag Springs, Walnut township. and T. J. Neil appointed Postmaster. On Thursday evening of last week the citizens of Gallipolis assembled in their several Wards to organize measures for aiding the needy poor of that town. On the first evening $378 in money and merchandise were secured, from which 106 families were relieved. The efforts have subsequently been continued. To Mr. Edward L. Menager is due the credit of originating the movement. Since the beginning of the revival 130 have joined the Methodist Church in Gallipolis. A four horse passenger omnibus runs between Gallipolis and Pomeroy. A resident of Cheshire was awakened the other night by a pain under the shoulder-blade; on examination he found a needle protruding about half an inch. He now has the whole needle; it is old and rusty. What is most remarkable he never remembers swallowing, or having one stuck into him.
last night I did a little more investigation into Wiley and found that in the 1910 census he was living in Harrison Township in Gallia County. It listed him as 55 with wife Sarah 32 and children: Esta (probably Ester)13, Parnie (girl) 11, Ray 9, Edna 5, Maude 2 and John S 6 months. Sarah's mother Mahala Cornell Hill Glenn living with them. In 1920 Harrison Township Census Wiley is listed as 63 a widower living with his son Ray 18. Have to do a little more checking to see if I can find were the other younger children went after the death of their mother. Like I said I'm just starting my research into Gallia County so don't have a lot collected yet. Also I don't see Grover Cleveland listed...have to check more on him. I am mainly trying to find information on my Cornell line but will keep my eye open for other Angel information that might be of use to you as I do my research. Anything that you have to share on Wiley would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for replying to my inquiry.
I'm glad the pictures returned to Gallipolis after all! Trisch

Transcribed without making changes to spelling and grammar. Transcribed by Joyce Robinson Athens Messenger February 18, 1875 GALLIA Fifty cases have been called at the present term of the Gallia county court. Joseph Hunt retired from the clerkship of Gallia county on Monday of last week, after sixteen continuous years in that position. The bar and officers of the Gallia county court signalized the occasion by presenting the retiring incumbent with a gold lined silver snuff box as a "token of their esteem." A large meeting was held on Tuesday evening of last week, by the citizens of Gallipolis to devise means fro the relief of the grasshopper sufferers. The recent report of the Grand Jury exhibits the jail of that county in no enviable light. There is to be a grand firemen's complementary ball in Gallipolis, on the 22nd inst.

That is what I have my family tree on plus my father-in-laws and a couple other trees I am working. I can put it around my neck and have it with me where I go. It is great and I have one that is the larger size. I got it on sale at Radio Shack, you don't want a small gigabyte because you can't hold much information. When I arrived at work today (Gallia County historical & Genealogical Society, 412 Second Avenue) I found an package with the Bostick pictures that were for sale on Ebay. There was no name on the package, just a note that said: "May the people in these photo's find their descendents, take good care of them. I knew this would be a perfect home for them". There was no signature. So, to the person who performed this kind deed "THANK YOU". Mary Lee Davis Marchi, Director Gallia County Historical & Genealogical Society 412 Second Avenue Gallipolis, Ohio 45631 One stumble is enough to deface the character of an honorable life.
I have just begun to research my family in Gallia County but have come across an "ANGEL" connection. Maybe this person is familiar to one of you Angel researchers and you can verify if I have correct information or might be able to add to what I have. Wiley Angel born about 1857 (died March 9, 1927 in Gallia County) married Sarah Frances Hill (born June 29, 1871 in Lawrence County) on Aug 25, 1891 in Gallia County. I show them (so far ) with 2 children: Grover Cleveland born Nov 6, 1893 and Ester born Nov. 2, 1897. Sarah Frances Hill was the daughter of James Wesley Hill and Mahala Cornell. Don't know if this is new and/or interest to anyone but I found this "tidbit" in my research for Angels. Just copied it so can't verify that it is correct. Wade Angel (born abt 1814 in VA died in 1880s) married about 1839 Jane Henry (born June 30, 1818 in Lawrence County & died May 12, 1873) Children: (1) Robert married 4 times ---1 Elizabeth Barnhart, 2 Sarah Butts 3 Joanna (Smith) Hyson and 4 Martha Stufflebeam (2) Samantha (3) Martha (1843-) married John Kyre (4) Zacharia (1848-1926) married Ellen McKeever (5) Elizabeth (1851) married John Saunders (6) Sarah (1851-1905) MARRIED Edward Nichols (7) Henry (1854) married Margaret I Christian (8) Flora (1862) married George Turner (9) James (1867) If I come across any information on Berry I will pass it along to the list.
Hello List Members: I found this on the Washington County site. Since Gallipolis used to be in Washington County, I thought you would enjoy reading this. I laughed when I read about the consternation felt by the First Settlers who were all New Englanders, when the back-countrymen from Virginia and Pennsylvania, also joined them, knowing that my Baltzell, Pines women were born in Virginia! Ha ha! Mostly, though, my Gallia County roots come from RAND, GATES, and HASKELL, all from New England.
