There were three steps that were required in order to obtain land from the federal government. 1. Survey. The applicant first had to apply to have the land surveyed. 2. Warrant. After the survey, a warrant was obtained. There was a fee involved. This gave the applicant access to the land. 3. Patent. A patent granted full title to the land and involved a final fee. Sometimes there was just a brief period between obtaining the warrant and getting the patent. Sometimes it was years or even decades. If the land was abandoned before obtaining patent, I believe the land would revert back to the federal government. Much of the land in Gallia County was initially obtained from the federal government by the Ohio Company, which in turn then sold it in much smaller parcels to settlers. The land that was not initially owned by the Ohio Company was acquired by settlers by the survey, warrant and patent process. Copies of the patents are available from the BLM web site. For a small fee, you can even obtain certified copies, and the very earliest patents (I think before about 1840 ) even bear the actual signature of the president of the United States. Neil E. 3. Hi Henny, What I've got is a copy of certificate # 1318 I got from the Gallia Recorders office found in V 19 P31 It's from the United States to Eben Donelson and filed in the Chillicothe office Sept 1, 1827. It grants patent to James Gilliland, the assignee of Ebenezer Donelson. I'm trying to understand what really took place with the transaction. Thanks for the help. 2. Transcribed without making changes to spelling and grammar. Transcribed by Joyce Robinson Athens Messenger September 16, 1875 GALLIA Wm. Watson, of Point Pleasant, is in jail at Gallipolis for forgery. There are fifty-five criminal cases on the docket for the next term of the Court for this county. James A. Mauck, a young gentleman well known in Gallipolis, died September 5th, 1875, at Cheshire. For the year ending March 31st, there were in Gallia county 664 births and 211 deaths. 348 marriage licenses were issued, and 13 were sent to the Lunatic Asylum. Charles Adkins, the leader of the band of outlaws who robbed Mr. Rice, in Guyan township, was captured in West Virginia, recently, and lodged in jail in Gallipolis. The Gallipolis Journal says: There is talk that there will be a raid made upon the jail to liberate the robbers therein. It is, we hear, to be made by the balance of the gang. The barn of Mr. C. A. Smith, in Perry township, in this county, was discovered to be on fire under such circumstances as to leave no doubt of its being the work of an incendiary. --- The barn and its contents were destroyed. Loss $800.

    2. Transcribed without making changes to spelling and grammar. Transcribed by Joyce Robinson Athens Messenger September 9, 1875 GALLIA Gallipolis would seem to be swarming with thieves. The total expenses of the late Institute, of this county, were $225.75. There were twelve prisoners in the jail of this county at the close of the week. The Republicans throughout this county are enthusiastically awake and active. James Aleshire, of Gallipolis, passed the physical examination at the West Point Military Academy. T. J. Neal's house, in Walnut township, was visited by thieves, Sunday of last week, and $15 taken. Miss Hannah U. Maxon, recently a teacher in Gallipolis, has accepted a like position in Springfield. George King, of Gallipolis, left for Germany on Tuesday of last week, to get his fortune. The amount is $40,000. Dr. W. B. Guthrie has been appointed City Physician, of Gallipolis, for the ensuing year by the Board of Health. James Carter, a collier for the Keystone Furnace company, and living in the upper end of Huntington township, recently committed suicide by hanging. Some fellow, says the Gallipolis Journal, went to the hen roost of Jim Bashore the other night and was about to "inquire within" when he received a dose of shot liberally distributed, which operated as a "notice to quit." Some man went to the house of Mrs. Bryan, in Addison township, one day last week, while the men folks were absent at work on the farm, and finding her alone drew a revolver and pointing it at her, told her to keep still while he helped himself. He took $50 in money and such other things of value about the house that he wanted, and left. It is probable that the robber watched the house until all the men had left. ---[Gallipolis Journal.

    3. Hi Neil, Do you know if there were any military bounty land warrants issued in Gallia Co.? I thought all of the county was part of the Ohio Company. I've been all over the BLM web site and can't find any info about this parcel of land. When I search by the certificate # the results show a different legal description located in Lawrence Co. Where did you find the Gilliland patent for this piece. I see him as having patent on two pieces of Gallia Co land, but not for this same legal description. My Eben Donelson was in the war of 1812, but not much info exists on his service. I've never found anything on him receiving a military warrant for land in the indices, but there incomplete. If this land wasn't a military warrant, would the procedure have been that an interested party would find a piece of land they wanted, apply to have it surveyed, then pay to have a warrant issued? What was the purpose of the warrant? Was it a right to buy or putting a hold on the land, or purchase? Could someone have intended to sell the right to purchase without actually ever having purchased it themselves or taken possession? Thanks again for the help. 1. August 26, 1875 - Athens Messenger
    2. Transcribed without making changes to spelling and grammar. Transcribed by Joyce Robinson Athens Messenger August 26, 1875 GALLIA Nearly every township in this county has a Hayes' Club. The coal-heavers on Little Raccoon are reported all quiet. The new College building at Rio Grande is rapidly approaching completion. A colored lady, Mrs. Viney, living in the village of Porter, has pieced a quilt with 33,724 different pieces in it. The loss of Mr. McFarland by the robbery of his jewelry store, at Gallipolis, which we noticed last week, is stated to be between $3,000 and $4,000. Charles Gilliland, now confined in jail at Gallipolis on the charge of attempting to commit a rape, tried to hang himself, but was discovered and cut down. He has since built a fire in his cell which, however, did no damage. On Thursday night last, about 12 o'clock, the residence of Reuben Rice, in Guyan Township, was entered by five men in disguise. Mr. Rice's son, a young man aged about 25, was knocked down, and three of the men guarded him and Mr. and Mrs. Rice while the other two explored the house. --- They found $175 in currency, with which they departed. --[Bulleten. 2. Transcribed without making changes to spelling and grammar. Transcribed by Joyce Robinson Athens Messenger August 19, 1875 GALLIA Considerable damage was done to bridges in this county by the recent freshets which prevailed throughout south-eastern Ohio. The new M. E. Church structure, at Gallipolis, is progressing rapidly. The walls are above ground and the work is going on satisfactorily. The residence of Josiah Hawk, near Gallipolis, was recently entered by burglars and property to the amount of about $150 abstracted therefrom. The Gallia County Fair will be held on the grounds of the society, at Gallipolis, October 6th, 7th and 8th. D. T. Smithers is president of the society. On Saturday morning, 7th inst., the jewelry store of Walter McFarland, at Gallipolis, was entered by burglars who carried away about $1000 worth of watches and jewelry.

    1. August 12, 1875 - Athens Messenger
    2. Transcribed without making changes to spelling and grammar. Transcribed by Joyce Robinson Athens Messenger August 12, 1875 GALLIA Gallipolis has latterly been infested with burglars. They are building a new Methodist Church in Gallipolis. They are to have fifteen policemen without salaries, in Gallipolis, in each ward. The late Democratic meeting at Gallipolis was a harvest for saloon keepers, one of them sold nearly two thousand drinks. It is stated that at least a thousand acres of potatoes have been overflown (sic) in Cheshire township, Gallia County, and, of course, entirely ruined. Mr. Benjamin F. Curry, of Gallipolis, while engaged in catching drift in the river, near that city, on Monday of last week, fell out of the boat he was in and drowned. Miss Heisner, of Gallipolis, while on the train between White Sulphur Springs and Covington, W. Va., recently, had her pocket picked of $100 and her baggage checks (sic). Abraham Syphas, when returning from the Democratic meeting in Gallipolis, says the Journal of that city, was thrown from his horse, near the residence of Esquire Plymale, and has since died from the injuries he then received. The jewelry store of W. McFarland, of Gallipolis, was entered Saturday night, the safe blown open, and nearly the entire stock of jewelry and watches stolen. No clue to the perpetrators of any of the recent robberies here. -- [Journal. On the Davis farm, just above Gallipolis, last Monday morning, Guy Milliken shot Wm. Faulkner in the left eye with a revolver, killing him instantly. Both were colored, between whom a feud has existed for some time. Faulkner making frequent threats to kill Milliken and meeting him this morning, attacked him with an ax, when Milliken entered the house and got a revolver and shot him dead.

I read in the Laidley book about Charleston, WV, that he went there when what is now Charleston was Kanawha Court House, VA, before the War began. Some references say he was in the Union Army and may have been a drummer. They say at least two of his brothers were there with him and that when he and a brother enlisted, one was left in charge of the JM Gates and Brother store he began. The company lasted over 100 years and The Gates Paint Company was the largest paint and plate glass business in the region for all those years. He lived in Gallipolis, where he is said to have been born, in the 1840 Census, being only 2 years old, and 1850 Census, at age 12, where his father Moses was 52 and a very wealthy blacksmith, as was his brother Daniel Haskell Gates, who was 24. His other brothers in 1850 were John, aged 20, and George, aged 12. He is also listed in the 1860 Census at age 24. His father, Moses, had died, now Daniel Haskell Gates was the head of the family with all the wealth and was also POSTMASTER. Brother Virgil was now the Blacksmith and George was the ASST. POSTMASTER (who says nepotism isn't a good thing? ha ha) Anyway, something took all these young men away from Gallipolis-was it the War? Most of them ended up in Kanawha and Putnam Counties, VA, now WV. Any help with the service records would be very much appreciated. Thanks so much! 1. Thanks for letting me know JM Gates was "Merrill" not Madison!
    2. I appreciate your remembering this when you were going through death certificates and the like! The Gallia County bunch is the best of the best! (Smile) I can't believe all my Gates ancestors, except poor old Moses, who "took an apoplectic fit in front of Solomon Hayward's" and died there, left and then stayed in Charleston, Virginia, now West Virginia! I can't wait to come visit y'all! (Smile) Sharon Lee Gates

    1. What do you think "old School" meant here? Was this the North vs. South Presby?
    2. The Bulletin says: On Tuesday last the Supreme Court of Ohio decided the long-pending suit of the The First Presbyterian Society of Gallipolis, in connection with the Hocking Presbytery, plaintiff, vs The First Presbyterian Society of Gallipolis, in connection with the Athens Presbytery. The case has long been on the docket -- about twenty years --- in one form or another. Years ago there was much bitterness in our midst about the struggle, and there was scarcely an individual in the community who did not "take sides." It will be noted that after the long and vexatious litigation, the "Old School" has triumphed. Sharon Lee Gates
