    2. In working on my family genealogy in Pennsylvania and Virginia, I have run across many listings for Allison, Boggs, Waddel and several others I recognize from the List. Should I forward this to the Society to replace the missing information? Also, Henny, you have worked on the Carter's for quite a few people over the years, the Ripley's and Allisons's as well. Would you please copy any of the information you have on file for the Library and main Society so that some of the information is replaced? I know that Ann Zimmerman and Carol Carter's works can never be replaced, however, we do owe it to them to do our best. Denise Ashleman

It grants patent to James Gilliland, the assignee of Ebenezer Donelson. I'm trying to understand what really took place with Mary, You gave the land descroption as: NE quarter of Sec 12 of Twp 6 Range 17, containing 160 acres of the lands directed to be sold at Chillicothe. Range 17 includes: in Lawrence Co. #1 &#2 Fayette, #3 Lawrence, #4 Aid, and #5 Symmes. Township #6 in Range 17 is Greenfield in Gallia Co. Madison Township of Jackson Co is #7 The townships listed above were all part of Gallia from 1803 until Lawrence and Jackson were formed about 1816/17. A standard township is six miles square, divided into 36 one mile square sections. In Range 17, they are numbered starting in the NE corner with #1, working across the north side to #6 in the NW corner. Drop down to the next row and number from west to east with #7 thru #12. Follow that pattern so that the section #36 is the SE corner. Sections 1-6 of Greenfield are part of Madison Twp in Jackson Co. The other 30 sections are part of Gallia. Therefore your section #7 is the NE section of what is now Greenfield Twp. Land in the sections is described by the dividing the section into quarters: i.e. NE, NW, SW, and SE. The standard one mile square section is 640 acres, a quarter section is 160 acres. This parcel of land ican be reached by following OH 141 from Gallipolis to OH 233. Proceed on 233 to a little wide spot called Gallia. Just north of Gallia, Gallia- Center Point road turns off to the east or right side. Follow that and between two and three miles from 233 you will be in the middle of the parcel. A creek runs from north to south thru the middle of the parcel. Rt 233 also connects with OH Rt 93 in Oak Hill The Ohio Auditor has a FREE booklet describing all Ohio lands and surveys, and info on reading descriptions.. Don Clark

It is proposed to place a clock in the tower of the new M. E. Church, at Gallipolis. The jail at Gallipolis was burglarized on the night of the 8th inst., and an officers trowsers (sic) robbed of $16. Mr. Hiram Dale, who has long been a miller at the mill of R. Aleshire & Co., of Gallipolis, has removed to Fort Worth, Texas. Judge S. S. Deputy Sheriff Ripley, of this county, frustrated an attempted jail break from the jail at Gallipolis, on the night of the 9th inst., by creaping (sic) in just as the prisoners had made arrangements to creap (sic) out. Rev. F. Davis, of Rock River Conference, Ill., and son of Mr. Grasson Davis, of this county, has been appointed Missionary to India. His field of work will be at Magras (sic) and its vicinity. The Union Woolen Mills, of Gallipolis, have secured a contract for 100,000 or more yards of flannels. This will put this establishment to work again, and thus give employment to a large number of hands.

I thought all of the county was part of the Ohio Company. I've been all over the BLM web site and can't find any info about this parcel of land. When I search by the certificate # the results show a different legal description located in Lawrence Co. Where did you find the Gilliland patent for this piece. I see him as having patent on two pieces of Gallia Co land, but not for this same legal description. My Eben Donelson was in the war of 1812, but not much info exists on his service. I've never found anything on him receiving a military warrant for land in the indices, but there incomplete. If this land wasn't a military warrant, would the procedure have been that an interested party would find a piece of land they wanted, apply to have it surveyed, then pay to have a warrant issued? What was the purpose of the warrant? Was it a right to buy or putting a hold on the land, or purchase? Could someone have intended to sell the right to purchase without actually ever having purchased it themselves or taken possession? Thanks again for the help. The warrant gave the person the right to use the land. Often there were certain conditions that had to have been met before patent could be obtained. For instance the 1862 Homestead Act required that a certain amount of the land had to be in agricultural production the first year, and that some improvements had to be made before patent was issued. There was a five year waiting period before patent could be obtained. Most of the federal land that was obtained by settlers in Ohio, however, was obtained under a land act that was passed in 1820, and the requirements were different. For instance for a higher price the land could be obtained after only about a six month waiting period. Military bounty land was not necessarily given in the same county where the person resided, and it was very common for the recipients to sell the warrant, with the patent then ultimately going to the person who bought the warrant. The land my gg-grandfather got in 1855 was near Cincinnati. The rules for bounty land from the War of 1812 changed several times, and in 1855 those who had as little as two weeks of active service became eligible. You should be able to obtain the warrant number from NARA from the person's War of 1812 military file. Ask for the complete file. Often they just send selected parts. It's possible the BLM didn't manage bounty land. Maybe someone else on the list would know. A John Donelson obtained a patent in 1846 in that same township (section 31 instead of section 12). Townships and ranges in Gallia County must be skewed by some sort of correction line, because I have never been able to figure out just where those land descriptions fall, so I don't know which township that was in. (Hint--it would be a nice project for the historical society to develop a simple map showing the townships with their respective township and range numbers) Neil E. Folsom, CA

    3. Mary, in all the years that I have researched land records I have only found one connected to a bounty land property in Gallia Co. I've always understood that there was not supposed to have been bounty land in Gallia County and yet there was that one instance of which I am aware. Neil is right in that not all of the county was covered by the Ohio Co. The rest was purchased directly from the government. Sometimes, as it appears in this case, the deed was filed in a nearby land office, such as Chillicothe, rather than in Gallia Co. Sometimes with BLM if you can not find the piece of land, it means that the person was at least a second owner...not getting it directly from the governement. Henny Evans >
