Susan and Pat, No truer words have been spoken. I didn't mean to start a firestorm by asking the location of OGS conference, my mother just happens to live in Akron! She's 71 today, doesn't get out much, and 5 years ago didn't know anything about her family but her father's name. A nasty divorce of her folks seperated her from all this wonderful history. Thanks to the work of Henny Evans years before my search started we were able to get info on this elusive family. I've enjoyed this list immensely and the help from everyone, where would I be without you all? But is it necessary for you to rub Henny's face in it everytime someone gives thier group attention? There is such an immense amount of info to be had there in Gallia County surely even 5 teams would have trouble gathering it all? Now, that being said, will I stop getting help, my questions unanswered because I owe Henny and have deep respect for her? I've refered people to this list countless times, but if this keeps up...I don't know. I hold nothing against either group, but stop this "one upmanship" Debra Leonard -----Original Message----- From: pegmws@mindspring.com To: OHGALLIA-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Tue, 12 Apr 2005 12:50:13 -0400 Subject: Re: [OHGALLIA-L] O.G.S. I agree with Susan. I have no idea what transpired to cause a schism in the Gallia County genealogy societies but it appears that both groups have much to offer. Please post without drawing the lines of demarcation even more indelibly in the sand. I can only imagine the hurt that is pervading the area. How very sad for everyone. Hello Mary Lee, IF we are talking about the SAME Donna Lewis, then yes she is coming with me. Her Father was Herman Lewis. Does that help. :) Jackie _?_ will also be coming with us. Donna says Jackie is a Cousin too. Donna and I will be meeting for the FIRST time!!! I have not met Jackie either. So it should be FUN!! An adventure!! Knowing the "line", you probably know the Lewis Cemetery I'm refering to. Donna say's she saw it last about 10 yrs ago with her Sister Ruth. They could only find 1 stone standing at the time. Do you have any idea the condition of this Cemetery now? Donna said it was quite overgrown 10 yrs ago. Do you know any adventurous folks who might want to go exploring with us who have brush clippers & the strength to use them?? What are your hours on Friday? See you Friday, Elaine Pollock PS: Would the snakes be out yet! ?? IF tyhey are, we would need an "adventourous guide" who is knowlegable about the that "population", and how to stay clear of them!!!! I live in the "North County" and we don't have those slithery things here. I have no idea how to stay clear of them!!!!!!! PSS: If you don't know, Donna's sister Ruth passed about 6 years ago. > [Original Message] > From: Mary Lee Davis Marchi <mlmquilt@zoomnet.net> > To: <OHGALLIA-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: 4/12/2005 6:54:21 AM > Subject: Re: [OHGALLIA-L] RE: Lewis Cemetary > > Elaine, > Donna Lewis is a cousin of mine through the Glenn's. Thanks Mary Lee. A family member (Donna Lewis, Waverly, OH) that I'll be visiting with, said the "Old Lewis Cem" was VERY overgrown last time she visited. That was about 10 years ago. This Friday, I'll be coming to the Historical Society for the 1st time. I'm wondering IF anyone could direct me to the "Old Lewis Cem". These Lewis's would have been among the 1st settlers. Some names are John Lewis, Joshua Lewis arriving early 1800's. Thanks, Elaine Pollock
Charlie, I think your John is possibly an uncle of my John, (the one mentioned in this deed). I have a copy of another deed that calls John "of Mathew of Clay". Mathew Gilmore lived in Monroe County in 1820, then in Harrison Twp of Gallia Co. in 1830. The "tax duplicate" of 1835 says Mathew was taxed for land in Clay Twp, but I have no other proof of any land ownership for Mathew. The deed mentioned in my first message includes a description of "thirty-five links to the west bank of Raccoon Creek. Part of Raccoon Creek seems to lie in Section 5 of Clay Twp. It also runs through the top section of Harrison, but that appears to be numbered "12". It also mentions "Sally" as the wife of John. My John married Sarah Trotter. Back to your John, I think he could have been a brother to Mathew, thus making our Johns uncle and nephew. Your John was born about 1793, and Mathew born between 1785 and 1790. Both were born in PA. I have been trying to sort out these Gilmores and have started entering your John into a database, hoping that would help me see clues better. I'll be happy to send you what I have when ready, though most of it is not documented. [Was sent to me by another researcher]. I have been trying to gather census info for more clarification. I work again tomorrow and family coming for the day , so it will be several days before I can get back to you. Cheryl, Thanks for replying. I have copies of the 1874 plot maps, and maybe that's where some of the confusion starts for me. There are multiple numbers in many of the sections. Jacob Loucks section is labeled as "5", but if following the traditional numbering system, it looks as though he would be in number "10", with the section at the bottom right of Harrison township [directly below Jacob Loucks section] clearly labeled as "7". Also, the land description for the transfer from John Gilmore to Mathias Angel mentions "thirty-five lengths distance to the west bank of Raccoon Creek". According to the 1874 Gallia Co. maps, Big Raccoon Creek flowed through Harrison Twp. Section 12 and Clay Twp. Section 5. Is there possibly a "Little" Raccoon Creek that I am over-looking? While trying to understand land transactions in the county I've noticed a Norton Campbell & Company seems to have owned large parcels of land in Greenfield Township, including some my ggg-grandfather owned. Does anyone know who or what Norton Campbell & Co was or is? Were they a mining outfit by any chance? Mary
