I am sorry Susan, but if Hocking Valley was east of Gallia County it would be in the Ohio River, only thing east of us is the big river. This is a nice website that will allow you to see the area that we are talking about. http://www.hockinghills.com/ It is a beautiful area with lots of rolling hill sides . The Hocking Valley Railroad, a restored steam engine , runs every weekend and most week days during the summer. If you are a railroad buff or just like to take a leisurely trip to the area there is alot of things to see and hear. Yes, the Ohio Canal system did run through this area and one of the locks is still visible... there is a little roadside picnic park there. Denise, Henny, Cheryl and Marty, Many thanks for your insight and information you shared. I will pass it along and hopefully we can get the answers we need. You guys are great! It basically runs through Hocking and Athens Counties in Ohio. This would be to the east of Gallia County. Once had a canal running near it and, at least a few years ago, some remains could be seen. It was important (the canal) for the transportaion of goods. It is very beautiful countryside and I think you would love it if you are even able to visit. I have been assisting a family member with their genealogical research. It has been difficult because two adoptions had occurred in the family and gaining access to the records can be quit cumbersome and difficult. Here is the most recent challenge A family member had recently requested and purchased a certified copy of a Death Certificate from the state of Florida. The main reason for doing this wasn't just for genealogical reasons but also medical reasons. The deceased is the biological father; however, he gave his children up for adoption to their stepfather. The children were raised by the biological mother and adoptive father. The children are concerned because the biological father died fairly young and would like to know if there are any medical conditions they should be concerned about. The state of Florida will only issue A DEATH WITHOUT A CAUSE CERTIFICATE to the family because they are no longer considered his children. I know when I have purchased Death Certificates for genealogical purposes the cause of death is always listed. Most of my research has been in Ohio. Do the laws vary from state to state? What about all of the adoptive children out there who have no connection to their biological family's medical history?

Examples are the local library or historical society, state university, or LDS. An obituary might provide a clue as to cause of death. Personally, I don't think sharing adoption status information with records clerks is a wise idea. Complete strangers don't need that information to do their jobs. -- Marty Cassidy Seattle, WA USA
Vicki Mackie wrote: > > The state of Florida will only issue A DEATH WITHOUT A CAUSE CERTIFICATE to > the family because they are no longer considered his children. > Fairly recent Federal Laws have limited distribution of "medical information", and some states/jurisdictions have interpreted this as applying to the cause of death on death certificates. Then, in some states each county applies their own interpretations. Sometimes it helps if the requestor identifies themselves as being very closely related. Perhaps you are just beginning your search and mistakenly believe you are a grandchild, for instance, then discover (via the death certificate) your relationship isn't as close as you thought. Happens all the time. -- Marty Cassidy Seattle, WA USA
There was an article in "FamilyTree" Mag recently that dealt with the release of adoption papers . I will see if I can find it and scan , put in a pdf for you. My nephew's senior project last year was on genealogy for adoptive children. He may also have some info that will shed light on this subject. I will get back to you on that. Cheryl & the Society, I for one appreciate being kept informed. I joined the Gallia County Genealogical Society many years ago and want to continue to support the County's Genealogical Society. When a new organization takes on a name similar to an already established organization, you are obligated to your members to maintain clarity as needed to protect the Society's reputation and charter. This is not meant to cast doubt on the other organization. It is ethical to make sure I (one of its members) knows who I am dealing with and not have my contributions or membership diverted unwittingly based on this confusion, whether purposeful or not. (Someone else brought this back in to play by bringing up the membership drive by the new group to members of the current Society) If I had a company and another company established themselves using the same name + a few letters, I would make the same distinction to my constituents/customers when necessary and, logically, so would most people. I almost kept quiet -- but since everyone has opinions and taking your note out of context, I thought I'd share mine. Your response is indicative of the problem; no one appears willing to look at their own behavior or choice of words. Sorry to be so direct but this arguing is tiresome and I would get off the list except I really like so many of the people, their helpfulness and, most of all, I want to give my children and grandchildren information about their roots. My parents, both long dead, would be so unhappy about this situtation, especially my father who loved Gallia County.
