Can't answer your question right now, on my way to Michigan, but, when you come to Ohio, try to make time to tour the Hocking Hills which is a state park (actually several different sites) they have a lodge or you can stay nearby in Logan or Nelsonville or even in Athens. The area is very beautiful and provides ideal hiking opportunites. There is a state lodge and cabins can be rented. If you have to do research in Hocking or Athens Counties, you might consider staying in the Hocking Hills for your trip. So glad you are looking forward to coming to our beautiful state. In my opinion, southeastern Ohio is the most beautiful of all. If it was, as I believe, then it would seem I can still do the research through Washington County sources, right? Isn't it so, that if a place was in a county when one's ancestors were there, one would not search in a new county name if they had already left there before the new county was formed? This is a good genealogical question and it has plagued me with the Olde Virginia counties, too, which were much changed and added to between 1776 and 1850, with all the southern and westward movement. Lawrence County is to the south of western Gallia; Jackson County is along the western border of Gallia; Vinton County is directly north of the western part of Gallia; Meigs is north of the EASTERN part of Gallia County; and Athens is directly north of Meigs..... so, Athens and Meigs would be NORTH EAST of the center of Gallia County. I keep a copy of a Rand McNally Atlas next to my computer.... not the best, for a county map source, but a great for getting a general idea of a state's layout. If you are an AAA member, they have maps available. County maps are available from ODOT or the County Engineers Office. My cousin, who works in road construction, has given me maps for several counties, they are GREAT for townships locations within the county. Actually, the "Boot" of Meigs county lies to the east of Gallia county.... across the river, part of WV, across the river again. The following is an interesting site: http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~maggie/ohio-lands/ohlands.html If you click on Michigan Survery, scroll down you will find two maps - one indicating the date each county was established, and the 2nd indicating the date they were founded (same date in some cases). Hopes this helps. SueEd NY --- Robin Fife <rr5659@dragonbbs.com> wrote: > > Athens and Hocking Counties are north west of Gallia Co. Well, I, too, seem to forget about the canals and travel on them, partly, I suppose, because by the time the canals were built most of my ancestors were already in Gallia. The latest of any of mine arriving there was 1860, William Richard, from Wales. Strange about him, he settled in Clay Township instead of in the northern part of the county with the other Welsh......... Charlie, I think this was a map of Navigable Branch Canals. I found it by accident. I thought Sharon Gates might get some info from it, it sure helped me. Doesn't the Hocking River dump into the Ohio up by Coolville area? I go up that way 3 or 4 times a year, but never thought much about it. I guess I was pretty dense, but I didn't think about people traveling by canal, only by the Ohio River (guess that comes from seeing the big boats going up and down the river all my life, even now we can hear the boats motors at night when everything is quiet). I know people traveled up into the heart of Gallia County by way of Raccoon Creek, I'm sure the Hocking served the same purpose. Try this one. It is old but the rivers stayed the same...somewhat. http://tsturgill.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/ohio1815.jpg Cheryl Charlie Hazlett <charlie@hazlett.net> wrote: That is a good map, but the Hocking River goes on and empties into the Ohio River...... That is a good map, but the Hocking River goes on and empties into the Ohio River...... Sharon, Evidently I was either sleeping or hit the delete button accidentally when you posted about your family migrating from Vermont.I just saw it in the subject line of another post. My Davis side migrated from Vermont between 1815 and 1833. I always thought they traveled by way of the Ohio River, then A few years ago someone told me they probably traveled down through New England, across Ohio and down through the canals. They settled in Huntington Township, Gallia County and just across the border in Vinton County. I think maybe some of their relatives settled in Athens County also, but I am not sure. What timeframe did your family travel? Mary Lee Davis Marchi One stumble is enough to deface the character of an honorable life.
