    3. I was told about a year ago by the cemetery chair for the Ohio Genealogical Society that there are more reported cemeteries in Gallia County than in other county in the state of Ohio....over 500. Ross County was second in line. Part of this may be that we made every effort to find them all when we first censused them....asking farmers who knew their land, hunters, looking at old lists, using topo maps, etc. This was back in the 1970's and early 1980's. Some of the stones copied then no longer are legible today. So, the preservation of the record was well worth it. Another reason for so many is that there are many, many small cemeteries all around the county on private land. 3. There is a website with some not all of the pictures of cemeteries of Gallia County on it. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/oh/tombpics/gallia/galliaco.htm Robert Sizemore is the administrator of this sight. Anyone can send their photos of graves to him. Several of the listers have been contributing to this for years. It isn't just Gallia County , it is for all the counties in Ohio. There are nearly 200 cemeteries in Gallia County, some have entrances and some don't. Another great sight for looking for informations on our ancestors is www.findagrave.com It is a site where you may add your loved ones and search for the missing ones. It encompassess the whole United States. I have added at least 50 of my ancestors into this database, you can add pictures of graves or pictures of the relative and put a little bio with them if you want. Check it out. I also found several of my husband's ancestors by doing a surname search. Cheryl Ash689@aol.com wrote: The emails about cemeteries prompted me to send an idea. 3. To all Lewis descendants. 42 different Lewis families have entered the Lewis DNA Project including Kit # 31437 John Lewis father of General Andrew Lewis and nobody has matched this Lewis family including Kit # 17070 Samuel Lewis father of John "The Baptist" Lewis father of Joshua Lewis of Gallia Co., OH. Some people thought they were related so this sets this theory straight. Their are 3 other Kits being processed now and more come in every day so we are hoping for a match. Raymond

    2. Marjorie, Thanks for the info. My Lewis was married to Nancy Sheets and according to the "Cemeteries of Guyan TWP....." booklet, they are both buried in the Garlic Cemetery. Wonder if Lewis's parents (WIlliam and Elizabeth) could be buried there too. I noted your surname and was wondering if you are a descendant of James Timothy Halley and his wife Margaret Jane (Wood) Halley who were married in Gallia Co. in 1852. I am a descendant through their son Lewis P. Halley - and am also trying to get genealogy info. on Margaret Jane's line. Stan Halley

    2. Sandi, Thanks for the info. My dad (now deceased) left his papers with me and one of them said William was born in SC and Elizabeth in NC- but no dates. I found in the 1880 Census of Gallia Co., Lewis Garlic says his father was born in SC and his mother in NC (although the letters were faded and hard to read). Am glad to have their marriage date and place, and the children. Do you know where they are buried?. The "Cemeteries of Guyan TWP...." book shows Lewis and Nancy Garlic buried in the Garlic Cemetery. Wonder if William and Elizabeth are there too? Also, wonder when they arrived in Gallia Co.

    3. Ray, This Gilmore family is not my line though there may be some connection. The "Thomas" Gilmore of 1793 is also called John Thomas and appears as John in the census. Another researcher says he died 8 Oct 1870 and may be buried on "the Gilmore farm" in Clay Twp. Of course, there is no record of this that I have found. I do not know when Anna died. The entry for the Thomas B. and Elizabeth actually says: "Gilmore, Thomas B. & Elizabeth's c. D.O.D. 02-28-1874" no age given The small "c" in the book "Gallia County, Ohio Death Records 1867-1899" indicates it was their child who died. An obit for Thomas B. Gilmore says he was living with his daughter Mrs. J.R. Patterson , 201 Thirty-third St, Huntington, while he died at the home of his son Thomas A. Gilmore, 245 Eighth Ave., Huntington. Thomas B. was apparently the son of John Thomas Gilmore, Sr. [b. 1793] and Louisa Dunlap. I don't know what happened to Louisa, but John Thomas Gilmore married Anna Lewis Clark [third wife] on18 Jan 1849. [ this date came from Ohio Marriages 1803-1900 on Ancestry.com] Hope this helps.
