I have a Nancy Carter born about 1799 married to John Boster 1851. Is this the same Nancy? I don't have any further info on her. Searching for descendants of Evan T. Edwards. (1872-1881) I am descended through his son John E. Edwards( 1829-1907), who moved from Jackson County after his marriage to Gallia County. John and Mary Jones Edwards were the parents of a number of children: Margaret Ann, b.1855-1918) who married Rev. William R. EVANS Isaac J.(1856-??) who married Mary Winifred JONES Catherine Ellen (1858-1915) who married Thomas D. JENKINS (my line) Mary Jane (1860-1952) who married John E. JONES Thomas J. (1863-1944) never married Maria Belle (1865-1910) who married Rev. William ISAAC Dinah Elizabeth (1867-1946) who married John RICHARDS Sara Emma (1869-1909) never married Evan J. (1871-1959?) who married Kate ?? Emma Florence b. 1874, who married Dan W. EVANS John J., (1877-1895) never married One would think that, with all those children, there must be SOMEONE else researching this family!! LOL Hope to hear from you. Kathi JENKINS Elliott
Hi, Kathy- I'm looking for an Edwards family, though I don't recognize any from your list. I'm wondering if you know anything about Evan Edwards's other children? My Jennie HUGHES married George, the son of Edward D. Edwards and Sarah WILLIAMS, in Jackson County in 1902. Jennie grew up in Centerville-Thurman, so she can be found in records for Jackson and Gallia Counties. I have very little info on this Edwards family, but based on a census record I believe they may have lived a couple houses from the Hughes family when Jennie and George were young. George died the year their only child, Helen, was born and Jennie moved to Columbus to live with her mother. Any of this sound like a possible link? Rachel Portland, OR
Henny, thank you for sharing that report. I for one would have loved going, but not this year, maybe next. Did have my picks for the Friday sessions. Developing Skills to Become a Genealogist, of course. Frequently overlooked 19th Century New York sources. Using New England Town Records to Reconstruct Families and Amy Johnson Crow's: Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker: using occupational records. You didn't happened to attend any of those did you? Would appreciate hearing about them too, or the ones you did. Anyone else attend the sessions? Thanks for sharing, Lois Walker
Jean, I am also working on a Griffith line from Lawrence and Gallia Counties. My Eliza Griffith was married to Elijah Williams and she was born in 1835 in Lawrence County to John and Mary Gwinn Griffith. Eliza Griffith Williams died in Gallia County in 1907. I will see what I have on this line, I have not looked at it in a long time and have not recently pursued it. There is also a Lanthorn that was married to my great-grandfather, it was his second marriage and his children never acknowledged the marriage because this was about her third or fourth husband and she was not thought of very well in the community. I don't even remember her first name just that he did not divorce her but did not live with her about the last 20 years of his life. I may have a little on that line but it is very doubtful. I will contact you privately with any information I might have on these lines. Thanks, Pat, for this information. I do not descend from these Lanthorns, but am gathering information along the Griffith lines. I descend from Elizabeth (Griffith) Lanthorn Neal's younger sister, Ruth (Griffith) Stewart. I look forward to hearing from your sister, Marian. - Jean -----Original Message----- From: Pcomptone@wmconnect.com [mailto:Pcomptone@wmconnect.com] Sent: Saturday, April 23, 2005 10:44 AM To: OHGALLIA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [OHGALLIA-L] Lanthorn, John and David Well I started a note and now I think I have lost it. The opening session of the O.G.S. Conference always features a keynote speaker who sets the tone for the Conference. This year it was John T. Humphrey of D.C. He is very involved with Germanic research. He also authored the 14 volume set of Pennsylvania Births. He is currently working on WW II genealogical records of interest to German and U.S. researchers. His opening topic was "Developing the Skills to Become a Genealogist." The message that immediately caught my attention is that there are those who are "doing genealogy" and those who have become genealogists through the development of years of research. Recognizing assumptions, developing skepticism, understanding records, assembling data and recognizing a variety of records from which data can be obtained were a few of his points. He also discussed developing the skill to recognize the object of the search, the skill to assemble data and think analytically, personal skills and recognizing that the genealogist has to become hardened to criticism. One way to avoid criticism is to document all sources thoroughly and carefully and to keep text as error free as possible. He agreed that no matter how hard we try, every book will eventually render a mistake or more. Dogged determination and a positive attitude will help us find our answers. He also used an example of hunting for an ancestor for 30 years in which he found two possible wills. One was incorrect for several reasons and the other he eliminated because the ancestor had signed with an x and he had earlier documents where he signed his name. I remembered reading once that people sometimes used an x because if they were new to America, they felt safer not signing something they really did not understand. BUT in this case, after years, John rethought his position and realized that in the will the ancestor in the beginning paragraphs was listed as weak and feeble. It turned out he had the correct will all along and that the ancestor was too weak to sign his name. Henny Evans
Hi! I am doing some research on the Lanthorn family of Lawrence and Gallia Counties in Ohio. Elizabeth Griffith married David G. Lanthorn in 1829. They had five children: Joseph, Lewis Able, Mary Jane, John, and David. David the father died in 1843. Elizabeth then married Walter Neal, a widower, who had many children. They were living in Walnut Township, Gallia County in 1850 with some of the Lanthorn children, some of the Neal children, and several of their children that they had together. By 1860, Walter and Elizabeth were living in Harrison Township, Gallia County, where they lived until their deaths. I am trying to track down information on several children of Elizabeth (Griffith) Lanthorn and David Lanthorn. John Lanthorn was born about 1837 or 1839 in Ohio (likely in Lawrence County). He was living with Elizabeth and Walter Neal in Gallia County in 1850. He is not with them in 1860. He married Cassandra Croush on August 1, 1861 in Gallia County. They appear in Gallia County in 1870 with the following children: Nancy E., born about 1863; Mary J. R., born about 1865; Susan D., born about 1866; and Francis M., born about 1869. I cannot find any of the family in the 1880 or the 1900 census anywhere. I'm wondering if some kind of sickness wiped out the whole family. David Lanthorn was born about 1841 in Ohio (likely in Lawrence County). He was living with Elizabeth and Walter Neal in Gallia County in 1850. He is not with them in 1860. I haven't found any evidence of him living on his own anywhere in any other census. I know that Walter and probably Elizabeth (Griffith) Lanthorn Neal too, were buried in what is known as Neal or Lanthorn Cemetery in Harrison Township. Might John and David be buried in this same cemetery? Does anyone have information about these two Lanthorns (John and David)? Can anyone scour their cemetery books for John and David in either Walnut or Harrison Townships? Thanks for any help! - Jean Griesan Colorado

Harold, I am only a co-lattiral descendent of Moses Gee (and his wife Christina Rupe, ) but I probably have a little info on him somewhere. Christina's sister Catherine married John K. Fife, Catherine and John Fife are my ggggrandparents. In Christina's fathers WILL Martin gave her the Northwest Quarter Section of his Farm in Huntington, Twp. Sec. 35. By 1850 they were in Wapello County, Iowa. This is all I have right now. Give me a little time and I'll dig a bit further. My cousin in Texas has fone a lot of research on the Rupe and related families. I'll see what she has sent me ref: Moses Gee.
