    2. It was spelled LEAPER. He was the son of Josephine Berridge and Frank Leaper--she was my great grandfather's (John W. Berridge) sister--they raised my grandfather, Lester Berridge, from the age of 7 after the death of both of his parents. So, my grandfather grew up with Chester. Heard lots of stories about him when I was I kid. My grandfather would get to laughing and slapping his leg when he told of childhood things they did. 2. Were there any schools way, way back? In Moses Gates' family in the early Censuses (about 1840 or so) one of his sons was listed as a Scholar or a Student. Does anyone know anything about the Anna Gates listed in the yearbook list published? How about Stewart Clendenin? I am Clendenin two ways in Olde Virginia, now West Virginia. My great-grandmother was Mary Alice Clendenin. Some say they all sprang from one Glendenning who started it all. They have a big Clendenin/Clendenen DNA test out there. Unfortunately, the women aren't doing these DNA tests because they are for surnames and going through the male line. They can find out things through the maternal line with the women, though, which is interesting, too, I think. Enough rambling. Keep posting the old stuff-it is so great to read-the papers, etc. Thanks for Cheryl trying to help me with the Morning Dawn Lodge of the Masonic Order, too. I know they are not a Secret Society, just a Society which has Secrets! Ha ha! Sharon Lee Gates

    2. Hi Denise. I saw your post on the Gallia Co. list and that you have researched the Carter Family. I would be interested to know if you might have a William Donald Holdbrook Carter in your files. He was born Nov. 27, 1910. Don't know who his parents were, but he was raised by a foster or relative family in Wood Co., WV. He came, I believe from the lower part of WV and is buried at Mt. Hope, WV. Any information would certainly be a blessing. Thanks for your time. 3. Marjorie, Thank you for looking. My Donnally family lived in Vinton. Merideth William Donnally was last found in 1895 working as a clerk in Weil's hardware store.( this information was provided to me by Sandi). His sister Nora married George Quimbly Rhodes of Jackson Co. Ohio. I just haven't been able to track Merideth down since then. I am fairly sure he did marry because of my grandmother's old address book lists a Donnally and it would have had to be his descendent. 2. I would like to know if there are any Board Certified, Accredited Genealogists in Gallia, County. Due to the fact that I am "just doing" genealogy, I though I should have a professional genealogist work on John Carter and Mary Lehr Carter. At least 50 people in more than 50 years have not been able to find out any more than the fact that they were married in Shenandoah, Virginia. John Carter lived in Gallia County for about 60 years, had nine children and score of grandchildren. None of the books on John and Mary are correct, files are missing. The Will book states that John has a will on file, however, it has been gone for more than the four years I have been working on the Carter's. There has to be something that gives some information about John and Mary's family and place of birth! If anyone has any suggestions about where to find this information, I am open for anything. I have worked on about every branch in the Carter family going back to the early 1600's in A! merica and Europe to find the connection. Please contact me at saultz@bellsouth.net. Henny, Could you please post a contact for John Humphrey. I, as well as many other people on the list, have ancestors from Germany, many of them came to Pennsylvania. An amazing amount of these families ended up in Gallia County. I have forwarded any information on surnames I recognized to the appropriate member of the list. Are the books on births in Pennsylvania transcriptions of birth records? It is unclear because you stated that he authored the set of 14, not compiled, edited and published them. I still have many family members that I am in contact with and they can check out these publications for fourth and fifth generation ancestors that have been difficult to find. I have the records of a "cow pox" vaccination a Great Great Aunt had to receive prior to traveling to America. The churches and towns in Europe have amazing records dating back hundreds of years. 3. It is funny, many of the old yearbooks from Gallia Academy into the late 1950's had nicknames and saying by the names. I love to look at the ones from my parent's era (1950's) but it was just recently I looked at those really old ones. The society also has yearbooks from the Gallia County Schools and Rio Grande College. I'm not sure what years are there but we have a great collection of them. 3. I was recently at the Gallia County Historical & Genealogical Society looking for family members in the old high school yearbooks. I didn't find the ones I was searching but did find other family members. I copied the names of Gallia Academy's graduating classes for 1916 & 1917. I thought I would share this information with everyone. Most of these people have nicknames and all have little saying after their names to tell about them, some are very amusing. Marjorie L. 3. He was a great guy, I remember him very well, Hey, do you think we just might be older than Marjorie... I used to love that old home of theirs on Second Avenue. It reminded me of the beautiful Southern homes with the veranda on the side.. They were on my paper route.. and good tippers. Dad and Chester used to exchange cigars... both of them chewed on them instead of smoking..them. Yes, Charlie, very memorable to leave in a small town.... I have no idea how it started but when I was a kid, he and I would bark at each other when we passed on the sidewalk!! He was a friend of my grandad and maybe that is why he allowed me to bark at him ! A strange life, growing up in a small town......strange, memorable and wonderful.
