I do not know how many years. I do rmember as a child going there for bread . It was a nickel. I usually ran errands for the rest of the neighbors.. and got a penny for my work. Forrest R. Johnson was married to Marguerite Walter. They had one son and 3 daughters. Forrest was a brother to Francis H. Johnson and they were the sons of Robert and Debbie Johnson. Francis also owned a grocery store.. the Puritan Market on Upper Second Avenue, ( in the early 1900's that was the M.E Faulkner Grocery..my grandgrandmother). Francis and Forrest are both decendants of Mad Ann Bailey.. Their mother was Debbie Trotter, the daughter of Richard Trotter. The real reason I asked about this store front is that somewhere in the back of my mind remember reading somewhere in a newspaper article that this building was where the Morning Dawn Lodge had it's first meetings.... and that is what I am trying to find out... What was the building before it was a long line of Grocery stores. If you look at the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps.. all the way back to 1895 it has GRO written on the explaination.. 2. Hi, I expect that I'm not the Larry you referred to, but my name is Larry and I remember the grocery store on the corner of Cedar and Third during the mid-50's. During that period I lived on the corner of Spruce and Third, and most days I would stop at the store while walking to school and spend a nickle for a dill pickle. I can still remember sticking my hand into a wooden barrel, pulling a pickle out, wrapping it in wax paper and eating it on the way. I believe that it was operated by the Johnson family during that period. Larry Rood ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    3. I know that this is just a hair away from the family histories.. but yesterday the Old Cedar Street Market had one side collapse after a huge rainstorm. They believe that the rain caused the brick to finally give way. Back a few months ago, we were discussing things/buildings around Gallipolis/Gallia Co. Some where I think that I read that this building was the home of the Morning Dawn Lodge. Does anyone else know the histoy ... the building sits on the corner of Third and Cedar. Once owned by the Johnson Family , they operated a grocery store there from the 40's to the 60's .... Charlie or Larry, do you know the history of this building. 3. I am amazed at the amount of information in this book -- it's a wonderful reference for anyone whose family settled in Walnut or Symmes Twp, which are the main two townships my family settled in. :-) I generally thought of justices of the peace as marrying people, but they apparently listened to cases ranging from "profanity," to "bastardy," and "assault with intent to kill" complete with names of plaintiff and defendant, names of witnesses, and names of jurors. A lot of really cool stuff! I just purchased it for $20+ tax. When I bought mine it was the fourth book they sold today, so... This is a must have book for anyone whose family comes from these two townships. My husband's not really into my buying books, but he's glad I purchased this one, even he's enjoying reading about all the different kinds of cases. :-) BTW, I hope this doesn't step on any toes, but if anyone's interested I do have an almost like new "Gallia County Birth Records Vol. 1, 1864-1881" that I'm finished with and would be willing to part with for $12.50, that's half off what I paid for it new! Thanks, Linda Trent [email protected]
