    3. I did a quick "google" for "inflation calculator" and came up with the site that has such a thing: http://www.westegg.com/inflation/ It is interesting to put in various dollar amounts and see how they compare to today's money. For instance, my first job at the A&P paid me $1.45 an hour in 1962 and that is equal to $9.44 today. So, the kids working at McDonalds are doing about as well, or as poorly, as I did. Interesting stuff...........and food for thought.....as things go up in price your money is worth less. Is that a good thing? What causes it? How can it be stopped? 1. [OHGALLIA] Goolsbey (Goolsby) Family
    2. Wendy Fischbach
    3. Hello Everyone, I am new to this mailing list and was wondering if somebody can help me. I am looking for information that can place William or Lorenzo Goolsbey in Gallia. I recieved a copy of William 'Gooldsby's' marriage record dated 25 Nov 1852 in Gallia to Francis (Fanny) E. Smith (b. 21 Apr 1834 in VA). William's date of birth is listed as 18 Nov 1827 in Gallia as well. I have census data placing them in in Summit, Steele, MN in 1860. I am unable to find any information about their life in OH. According to the records, William should have lived there from 1827 until early 1854 or late 1853. In 1854, William and Fanny had their first child, Lavine (Lavinia) who was born in Iowa. The following year John was born in MN. I am at a loss as I can not find any information about William or Francis, their parents or siblings (with the possible exception of Lorenzo Goolsby). The same holds true for Francis (Fanny) Smith. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Wendy To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe. -Anatole France ____________________________________________________________________________________ It's here! 3. Thanks for the information...you're right...our dollar is worth less. Makes me think of buying power in terms of time rather than dollar amount. For example...going to the doctor with a $20.00 copay takes so many work hours to pay for. --- Charlie Hazlett <[email protected]> wrote: > > I did a quick "google" for "inflation calculator" > and came up with > the site that has such a thing: > > http://www.westegg.com/inflation/ > > It is interesting to put in various dollar amounts > and see how they > compare to today's money. 2. Maybe some of the money was recovered since the "preliminary examination" of Johnson doesn't leave room for doubt. And the robber was caught within the week. He might not have had time to spend much. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Sun, 8 Apr 2007 7:18 PM Subject: [OHGALLIA] Gallia CW Soldier Robbed! I found the following to be rather sad. It comes from the Gallipolis Journal August 10, 1865, at least they apparently caught the fellow. The company was mustered out July 25, 1865 at Knoxville, TN., it was only 11 days after being mustered out, and probably 9-10 days after arriving home. "John Spears, private in co. G, 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery, mustered out and paid off with the regiment, was robbed in Gallipolis on Saturday night [August 5] last, of about $225 in 'greenbacks.' He resides near Patriot, in this county, and by this robbery loses his earnings of the whole war. A man by the name of Johnson from that section of the county, quite an elderly man, has been arrested and lodged in jail, charged with the theft. His preliminary examination, leaves hardly a doubt of his guilt." A quick search of the census of 1860 shows a William Johnson aged 68 living in Perry Twp. The only others living in Perry were a 28 and 39 year old, so it was probably this William. Anything dealing with the 117th OVI A.K.A. 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery is of particular interest to me since these are the boys who served with my great grandfather. 3. > For what it's worth, that $255 in 1865 would be the same as $2801 in > 2006 ! Agreed. I don't see his name listed with the volunteers of the 117th, so he must have enlisted after they were changed over to artillery, so that means that his length of service was only 26 months. If the average soldier received $13 pay per month (plus room, board and clothes <grin>) that would be almost 20 months worth of pay, and you figure that he had to spend some of his money during the war in order to get little treats and things, so that would be literally almost his entire savings during the war! That's a lot of hardship to have everything lost. Linda.

    3. For those who like to read newspapers when you come across "Saturday last," or whatever, did you know there is a website http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/index.html where you can put in the year and it will give you the date and day of the week? So you can put in 1865 and it will give you a 12 month calendar for that year giving dates and days of the week! I've known about perpetual calendars for years in the World Almanacs and such, but this is cool because there's no wondering, is this the right calendar to be looking at? It just gives you the year you request. :-) Linda Trent [email protected]

    3. Henny, According to the NARA website http://www.archives.gov/comment/regulations.html comments on the proposed rate increase are due by April 27, 2007 with the effective date of the change May 29, 2007. Prompted by the proposal I sent in requests for two pension files and two other types of files and all came in an incredibly short time. Jean Hoffman

    3. I would be interested in a source that gives enough information to identify an ancestor with a common name. He lived in Ohio, listed in 1860 Census but nothing after that. Although a Virginian by birth, he lived in Jackson County when the war started so if drafted, it was probably in the Union Army. Any suggestions gratefully accepted. 3. I am so sorry, when I first read your quesiton the State Street Market came to my mind and that was the store I was thinking........ But I do remember the Cedar Street market, as well. 3. Charlie, Was it this store, or was it the State Street Market on State Street & Third Avenue? That market was on a pretty much direct route back from Eddie's Pool Hall on Second Avenue. Fire destroyed the pool hall, and along with it, the very best bean soup in all of Ohio (if not the world)!
