    1. [OHGALLIA] Ohio State Library Genealogical Collection and news gleaned at OGS Conference
    2. Henny Evans
    3. Having just returned from the OGS Conference today, we heard talks from both OHS and the State Library of Ohio about things going on in Columbus. Mr. Paul Immel was honored today as he has been the overseer at the State Library of Ohio for the genealogical collections. He is not leaving the field by any means and it sounds like he has a busy future planned. While there we also learned of the great progress OGS is making toward their new library...they have hopes that it will be open in 2009. It will be an opportunity for them to get MANY one of a kind manuscripts available to all of us. OGS is the largest state Genealogical Society in the U.S. and we in Gallia County are very pleased to be part of such an excellent and outstanding group. We also listened to many excellent speakers and came home with new and exciting ideas. We picked up new members, chatted with many with Gallia connections and sold a very satisfactory amount of books. Henny Evans, Gallia County OGS Chapter

    1. [OHGALLIA] Ohio State Library Genealogical Collection
    2. Ellen Thomas
    3. This came through on another mailing list and thought I'd send it on. I just yesterday wrote the Cols Lib to ask about this and they said that the collection is actually being moved on the 23 and 24 and they HOPE to have it ready on the 25th. The library currently has Heritage Quest and I'm hoping that they will add Ancestry as the State Lib did some years ago. (although they do have it as a in library useage only) After many years, GENEALOGY SERVICES AT THE STATE LIBRARY OF OHIO ARE ENDING COMPLETELY as of April 19, 2007. The entire genealogy collection is being moved to the main location of the Columbus Metropolitan Library at 96 S. Grant Ave. on the east side of downtown Columbus (near Grant Hospital). The collection will be available for use there BEGINNING APRIL 25. They will provide in-the-library access to the same online genealogy services. Some advantages of the new location are: Extended Hours -- the new >>location is a public library that includes evening and weekend hours; Larger Staff -- the new location has over three times the number of >>staff working in the Genealogy area; a Larger Budget to add material to the collection. Beginning April 25, 2007, here is the contact information for Genealogy services: Also if you don't know this..... If you reside in the state of Ohio and have an Ohio Mailing address , you can receive a library card from the Columbus Metorpolitan Library... all you need to do is go to the website... www.columbuslibrary.org and on that page there is a place to apply for a library card. It takes about a week to get one... and then you can use Heritage Quest.. and ALL of the other electronic reference material that they offer. HOPE this helps someone.. I spent about 3 hours last night on Heritage Quest doing some book look ups for the family I am working on.. great stuff can be printed out or downloaded in a pdf... thanks for tax dollars working...LOL Ellen --------------------------------- Expecting? 3. Thank you for looking and googling.. I do believe that when the Gallia Academy building at State and Second burned, this is when the Lodge members moved to another building until they were able to establish a permanent home. I asked Mr. Dixion who is the Lodge historian to find the date for me that they were there. I know that it is stated like that on the marker outside of the ARIEL Theatre building.. but only so much can be put up there.. thanks for the reference. Ellen Lew & Terry <[email protected]> wrote: I just googled "Morning Dawn Lodge, Galllipolis" and found this item: "Morning Dawn" was the first lodge to be chartered, on January 5, 1810, by the Grand Lodge of Ohio. Andrew Lewis was the first Worshipful Master. Meetings were originally held in J. B. Ferrard's house on the north corner of Locust and Third Streets. In 1816 the lodge moved to the Gallia Academy building on the west corner of State and Second streets. http://www.ohiochannel.org/your_state/remarkable_ohio/marker_details.cfm?mar ker_id=142 Lew Casey -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ellen Thomas Sent: Monday, April 09, 2007 4:07 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [OHGALLIA] Cedar Street Market In a round about way, I did find out that the CEDAR Street Market was the Morning Dawn Lodge building earlier on in its beginnings... A young unmarried man might have been working anywhere in the area. 1850 census for Green tws. Gallia Co. Ohio has # 1794 Sarah Smith 55 b. Va Francis Smith 16 b. Va. Elizabeth Smith 21 b. I am looking for information that can place William or Lorenzo Goolsbey in Gallia. I recieved a copy of William 'Gooldsby's' marriage record dated 25 Nov 1852 in Gallia to Francis (Fanny) E. Smith (b. 21 Apr 1834 in VA). William's date of birth is listed as 18 Nov 1827 in Gallia as well. I have census data placing them in in Summit, Steele, MN in 1860. I am unable to find any information about their life in OH. According to the records, William should have lived there from 1827 until early 1854 or late 1853. In 1854, William and Fanny had their first child, Lavine (Lavinia) who was born in Iowa. The following year John was born in MN. I am at a loss as I can not find any information about William or Francis, their parents or siblings (with the possible exception of Lorenzo Goolsby). The same holds true for Francis (Fanny) Smith. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Wendy To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe. -Anatole France ____________________________________________________________________________ ________ It's here! 3. I just googled "Morning Dawn Lodge, Galllipolis" and found this item: "Morning Dawn" was the first lodge to be chartered, on January 5, 1810, by the Grand Lodge of Ohio. 3. No, I don't think Apologies are necessary, just think back to the census.. If an ancestor was worth $ 2000 back then just think what that worth would be now. Even if the ancestor had listed $200, you think poor man.. only worth 200... wow with that chart, you can well figure that their money went whole lot farther than what our $200 goes for now. I think that genealogy is a basic learning of what our ancestors went through, not just who there were. That piece of property or worth of $2000 might have been worth close to $43317 now, so that ancestor was more well off that I am now.... these little tidbits of extra information.. help put their lives in perspective... and I believe are acceptable.. Just think Charlie, how quicker along in school I would have gotten had that $1 an hour been worth what it is today.. I could have paid my tuition sooner ... and graduated quicker...
