Elsie, The link that you provided for the obit search is fantastic. I just was able to get 2 obits from them that I found on the Dispatch Archives that would have cost me over $5. It is very easy to use and the staff is able to get the obit to you with in 24 hours. I don't know about reactivating it but it would be worth a try, because they offer so much in the way of electronic research material. All that I did was to activate it by going online, doing a electronic search on Heritage Quest, they ask for your card.... and there you are online and it HERITAGE QUEST Try it, if it doesn't work then I guess you will have to go... I have had mine for 3 years.. and never been there. Ellen Carolyn Dawson Hayford <[email protected]> wrote: Somewhere in the application information is a statement asking for an Ohio address. The only problem that I have had with my card is that after three years I had to personally appear at the library to renew it. I could not renew on line. This is true for many libraries around the country. For those of you not living in Gallia County, contact your local library and see if you can do this. I go to the website for my library, input my name and number on my card and I then go to Heritage Quest. VOILA! I did this almost a year ago, after the announcement that Heritage Quest would no longer provide access through OGS (the Ohio Genealogical Society). I have never visited a branch of the library and have no problems using the card to access the on line databases. If you want to check out books, then you need to activate the card by visiting the library and provide your ID for verification. Every so often someone will announce that something from Gallia county or closer has come up on Ebay. I think many of us are sad to see these wonderful items "lost" from families. I can't count the times I've gone into an antique store and have seen some beautiful portraits in glorious frames. No names, nothing to say where it came from. You can't help (when you do what we do here) ask "who are you and where is your family?" What breaks my heart is you know someone will buy it for the frame and that lovely photo lost forever. -------------- Original message -------------- From: Wendy Fischbach <[email protected]> > Hello Everyone, I know there are many experienced > researchers who access this mailing list and am hoping > someone may find the information useful. It is a great help when someone spots a Gallia Co. related item on ebay and mentions it on the list. I was astounded to check on such a posting a few years ago only to discover that the lot of photos up for sale was from the family album of my great-grandmother's aunt. I was thrilled to purchase this lot of over 50 heritage and tintype photos. I will be forever grateful to Cheryl Enyart for taking the time to mention that auction. I am so glad that I followed up and acted on that tip! Debi Grubb
If you are only going to use the card on line, you do not need to come here to activate it. If you wish to check out items, then you need to stop in at one of the branches and show a photo id to activate it. Somewhere in the application information is a statement asking for an Ohio address. The library is for Ohio residents. Yes, it is correct that you must be in Ohio (at least once) to activate. I applied on-line for a card for the Columbus Library so that I could use Heritage Quest. They sent me a card. Now they state that I have to come to Columbus to activate the card. Is this correct? I suppose if the library says that's what you need to do, that is what you need to do. Seems reasonable to me...........
