I have never been to the Vinton Bean Dinner, but I do remember the bean dinners at Rio Grande. When I was just a little girl, I rmember my grandfather and grandmother taking me to the campus. There were many trees on the lawn and inbetween the trees they had put boards.. and made tables. You would receive a bowl of beans and hardtack (bisquits or cracker) and a glass of ice water. When I was in college and later after I was married, they moved the bean dinner to Bob Evan's farm, back at the shelter house. They would cook the beans in the big copper kettles, after the ladies of the Bean Dinner Society would clean and sort the beans (my grandmother Zella was one of those ladies). After the beans were cooked, you paid so much and got a bowl, sat down, they would bring around the beans in big 5 gallon metal buckets with a ladle and give you beans. On the table would becrackers, salt , pepper and onions for seasoning your beans. They also would give you a glass of cold water. When my sons were young , we took them, they still remember the older men who would ladle out the beans... and how hot they were... so hot the sweat would drip right off your nose..LOL During this era, they would also have different groups set up tents and sell, sausage sandwiches, pop, and home made pies... Quite a difference from when I was a child. I have gotten to a bean dinner in a few years... always right around my birthday -- in August.. It just isn't the same.... I miss good old George Northup.... the man with the bucket of beans... Hope that helps... thanks for the trip down memory lane Ellen [email protected] wrote: The bean dinners are so nice. Reminder to all....the lineage society banquet is approaching faster than we realize. It is Saturday, October 13 at Grace United Methodist Church at 6 for social hour and dinner at 7. We encourage to get your applications for First Families, Civil War and Settlers and Builders in early as it takes time to check them. We also will gladly fill them out for you or help you to do so. If you are missing a document, let us know and we can get it for you. You must be a member of our OGS Chapter in order to submit an application to us. First Families is for those here by 1820, Civil War is for any proven patriot...soldier, nurse who lived here or served here at any time and Settlers and Builders is for those who were here between 1821 and 1860. These three organizations were modeled after and copied from the same societies of the Ohio Genealogical Society, our state parent. Thanks, Henny Evans, OGS Chapter
The roster of Co. M, 7th OVC with many Gallia countians has just been added to our website. Henny Evans, OGS Chapter
I made the offer to look ups to the Meigs Board and decided to extend the offer to three other boards that I belong to: I have one volume of the Roster of Ohio Soldiers 1861-66 - Vol VII. It contains 87th - 108th Regements of the Ohio Infantry. It contains an alphbetical listing of the members by company - officers first. It gives the following information - Name, Rank, Age (at enlistment), Date of entering the service, Period of Service (how long they signed up for) and Remarks. In the back of the book there is a "Roll of Honor" for these regiments - listing by Regiment, soldiers that died during the war. Information given: Name, Compan, Rank, When they died, Where they are buried and remarks. Some of the remarks give specific information about where they died or were buried. If anyone has a relative that served in these regiments..... I would be happy to send them what information there is. I just need Name, Regiment # and Company. You should be able to get these from the NARA site. >From the Introduction of the book, it was commissioned by the Legislature of the State of Ohio. There were a total of 7 volumes - but the first book published was Vol 2 - covering Regiments 1 - 20 and was issued Oct 15 1886; Vol 3 - Regiments 21-36 issued Jan 15, 1887; Vol 4 - Regiments 35-53 issued Aug 15, 1887; Vol 5 Regiments 54-69 isssued Oct 15, 1887; Vol 6 - Regiments 70-85 issued Feb 1 1888; Vol 7 - Regiments 86-108 issued Aug 1 1888. Volume 1 containing the three months troops will be the last to be issued. It seems there were 10,000 copies of each volume with specific directions as to how they were to be distributed - to General Assembly members down to local libraries, with excess for sale at a price "not to exceed $1.00 per volume" and no more than one copy of each book to a single person. I'm very sorry to hear this. She was a sweet lady. I met her at a banquet there a couple of years back and she took a photo of my husband and I, sent me a copy and some info. We had a nice talk that night and I attended their church (where my great grandmother attended once upon a time.) the next morning. Is anyone planning to attend the National Genealogical Society Conference in the States and Family History Fair in Richmond Virginia next week? This Genealogical Conference will be host to genealogist from all across the country. There will be over 100 exhibitors in attendance with a wide variety of items to explore and there are a variety of seminars each and ever day. It will be four days of very interesting programs that will help even the seasoned genealogist. Choosing which programs to attend was the hardest thing to do as all the programs should be very interesting and if I could attend them all. A group of members of the Gallia County Historical and Genealogical Society will be in attendance and it would be nice to know if any of our fellow Gallia County researcher will be at the conference. Our group will be leaving on Monday as we plan to spend time researching at the Virginia State Library and visit some of the local historical sites. So, if you are also planning to be in Richmond before the conference we may see you in a restaurant, the library, the State House, a cemetery, church or anywhere else you might find a genealogist. Our group will be the ones walking up to strangers to ask where their family came or who their family might be. We hope to meet people from all over the country and hope to connect to others that might be either family or that their family might have traveled through Gallia County at one time. We hope to met many new people and this is one time that talking to strangers can be profitable (you never know who might be a cousin) So, let us know if you are planning to attend the conference. It should be a wonderful week of learning new things and gathering ideas to help create new and exciting programs in Gallia County. You can never know everything there is about researching and what better place to continue to learn but with the National Genealogical Society! I hope to see some of you in attendance! Is there anyone on this list related to or know anything about ROZELA SHOEMAKER DEWITT? She was born in Gallia county to MOSE SHOEMAKER and MARY RAMEY. She married ANDREW JACKSON DEWITT. She died Sept. 2, 1929 in Mason Co. WV. She was my great grandmother and I am researching her because of health reasons.
