    3. My Uncle who lived in New Mexico used to come back here to visit family in the Fall just to get Pa-Paws from Meigs County. In fact he made arrangements with a gentleman to ship them to him also. He loved them. They say they are similar in taste to a banana but I have never eaten them. Athens County has a Pa-Paw festival in September, at Albany/Lake Snowden area each year and have all kinds of things made with Pa-Paws. Herrmann Sent: Thursday, July 26, 2007 10:56 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [OHGALLIA] Samuel Rothgeb Obituary The following obituary was printed in the "Gallipolis Daily Tribune", on Tuesday, March 08, 1932: "SAMUEL ROTHGEB DIES SUDDENLY MONDAY EVENING Cerebral Hemorrhage Climaxes Week's Illness----Funeral Set for 2 O'clock Wednesday Afternoon. Samuel Vinton Rothgeb, 81, died at his home between Addison and Cheshire at 4:15 Monday afternoon. He had been ill about a week, suffering from a bronchial infection, but death resulted from a cerebral hemorrhage. With him at the time were his daughter, Ella, and his physician, Dr. C. A. Rife, of Kyger. Both of them, as well as the patient himself, felt that his condition was improving. One of his last inquiries was as to the fate of the Lindberg baby. He then asked that the curtain be pushed back that he might look out at the snow-covered landscape that he had known from his babyhood. A moment later he was stricken and quickly he passed away. Mr. Rothgeb was born and reared and had spent his life on the farm where he died, his home marking the intersection of the Gravel Hill road with State Route No. 7. He was a son of the late Wesley Rothgeb and is survived by the devoted daughter and only child, already mentioned, and by one brother and one sister--Reuben Marcellus Rothgeb and Mrs. Esther Swisher, both of Los Angeles. His wife, who was Julia Watson, died 19 years ago. Edwin and George Rothgeb were second cousins and near neighbors. As a boy of 13 he witnessed some of the stirring scenes incident to Morgan's raid into this territory. The Confederate and Union forces had quite a lively skirmish on Coal Hill, just a short distance up the slope from the Rothgeb home--perhaps the most serious encounter that ever occurred on Gallia County soil. Mr. Rothgeb was a pleasant companion, an honest and upright citizen, and enjoyed the respect and esteem of all who knew him. He would have been 82 years old on June 18. He had been a Mason for 56 years, a member of Siloam lodge at Cheshire and an Eastern Star. Funeral Services will be conducted at the home at 2 O'clock Wednesday by Rev. E. C. Vens of Kanauga under Masonic supices. Burial in Gravel Hill Cemetery by J. L. Coleman of Bidwell." ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    2. Dear Doug - You mentioned "paw paws". Oh, what a great fruit it is! My grandmother used to make "paw paw cake" and I can still still taste it. I just don't have a recipe for it. She was a cook at Holzer Hospital and I have often wondered if she made it for the patients for their meals. Thank you for bringing back a very fond memory. 2. Well, Doug, Gallia County is a very interesting place. All of my mother's family--both sides---lived there since 1803--and it is believed that Northup was named after Daniel Northup, A Revolutionary Soldier from Rhode Island, from whom I descend. My grandparents left Gallia County for Michigan in 1917, but they often returned to visit family, and I visited several times when a child to see my grandparents siblings. You might try looking into census records to find out exactly where and when your family was living. Once you know the township, etc. you can find other things such as property they owned burial sites. As I said before, the library and the genealogical society and historical societies have a lot of information including family histories and books. 3. Thanks, Henny. I was sincerely sorry to hear about the area's loss of Bob Evans last month. My mother spoke of a couple of cousins who were adopted by Mr. Evans and his wife. One of them apparently was a dean at Rio Grande College for a time. I guess it is one of those things about engaging in family history research: One learns all manner of odd trivia, only some of which is true or provable. Someday, I hope to discover what the "paw-paw fruit" actually is. Mom must have had a million stories involving this local delicacy. To this day, I am astonished at how her sisters and her survived to adulthood! *Grins* Doug Uptegraft

    3. Pleasure to meet kind folks like you, Joanne. *Smiles* Northup is a familiar name. My mom was born on "Tick Ridge" which isn't listed on any map or chart I've found. She told me once that it was near Northup which is where the rural post office was. I have only been to Jackson once in my life when I was very young. Some of my grandma's people lived in the area including her brother Ray who just died this past June. What I am finding in my research is a link to my mother who was probably the most important person in my life. It's goofy, I guess, but it keeps the mind working. I have found the connection to Wales that I had always felt but never understood. It wasn't until I started looking into this county where my maternal ancestors seemed to settle and only rarely leave that I discovered the large Welsh population who happened on Gallipolis in the 1810's and 1830's. *Laughs* It's remarkable. Phoebe (Betz) Myers is someone I would really love to find more regarding. She was married to Joshua [James?] Myers. My mother's recollections of her grandmother were rather slight, but she did tell some good stories about this woman. Apparently, Phoebe couldn't read or write, not a rare affliction in the time period, but she was a gifted natural healer and herbalist. I have one picture of her and her husband. The other information is less certain. I could post some birth dates and death dates, I suppose, to see if it links up. Take care, Doug

    2. Doug- You will find Gallia County one of the most friendly and helpful places you will ever find! Their resources are very helpful---this is the third oldest settlement in Ohio---ca 1790--and they have preserved much of their records and heritage.
