As others have said before, just read the genealogical portion of a post and skip the rest. It's just a sig line that's been on all of Charlie's posts. Can we avoid getting into this again and stay on topic? No sense filling up the archives with another discussion off topic. I'm not the list owner, but... I had a GGGG Grandfather Thomas Lewis back in the late 1700's who had 4 children by one woman and 1 by another without benefit of marriage and was hauled into court on at least 3 occasions for fornication but nothing ever came of it. I guess because just before he died ( only a few days) he obtained a marriage license to marry the mother of 4 of his boys. Died and never got to marry! 1. [OHGALLIA] Speaking of Skeletons in the closet................
    2. Teresa M. Herrmann
    3. My Great-Great Grandfather, George Wolfgang Herrmann [1814-1862] had 10 children. His second daughter, Magdalena Rosina Catharina Herrmann [1844-1897] married a Joseph Huggins on 07 May 1865 in Gallia County, Ohio. They had 3 children, [William, Magdalena, and Joseph, Jr.]. In the meantime..............back at the farm............her sister, Margaretha Dorothea Herrmann [1854-1935] was "fooling around" with her sister's husband Joseph Huggins. One morning, after the Cock crowed, Magdalena arose to find that her sister, Margaretha and her husband, Joseph Huggins, ran away together. They went first to Kentucky, and legally changed their last names, [Joseph changed his last name to "Davis" and Margaretha Herrmann changed her maiden name to "Ryder". Then they moved to Mountain Cove, Lucas, Fayette County, West Virginia and got married [Again for Joseph]. Joseph never legally divorced his first wife, since Margaretha could not face her sister and mother with what she had done. They had 10 children. They never saw their original families again. Joseph died in 1912 and Margaretha died in 1935. Magdalena [the first wife] never married anyone else again. Meanwhile, back at the Cheshire farm, they withdrew the "Amber alert" finally realizing what may have happened. Talk about "skeletons" in the closet. My tree is full of them. Makes you realize that even back then people had "exciting" lives! I noticed on the Ancestry.Com that allot of people doing the Davis family tree, always end at Joseph "Davis" and seem to have a "brick wall" in figuring out who his parents are! Should I break the news to them? :] Teresa Herrmann Columbus, Ohio

    1. [OHGALLIA] Elmer Otho Roush Obituary
    2. Teresa M. Herrmann
    3. The following obiutary was taken from the "Gallipolis Tribune" newspaper on Thursday, November 14, 1901: "BOY SUICIDE. Otho Roush, aged 14 or 15, son of John Roush, Jr. Who lived about a mile and a half from Morgan Center, wanted very much to go to a ball game at the Center Sunday afternoon. His father refused to give his permission, and it is said had also attempted to restrain the boy from the use of tobacco, to which he was becoming addicted. At any rate, Otho thought that not to go to the ball game made life not worth living, and took a swallow of strychnine, from the effects of which he died in a little while, to the great distress of his people." [Note: According to Ancestry.Com trees, Elmer Otho Roush was born on 30 Jul 1887 in Morgan, Gallia County, Ohio and was the son of John E. Roush [1863-1946] and Allie Thaxton [1864-1895].

    3. The following article was printed in the "Gallipolis Bulletin" on Friday, May 30, 1902: "The trial of the case of Cecelia Roberts vs. The City of Gallipolis for damages, resulted in a hung jury. It will be remembered that Mrs. Roberts tripped and fell on Olive Street while running to catch a train last summer and broke her hip. She sued for $5000.00 damages, alleging that the accident was caused by the carelessness and neglect of the City in failing to have the sidewalk in good repair."

    1. [OHGALLIA] OFF TOPIC -- PawPaw Cake
    2. Rose McClure
    3. little angel wrote: > Rose > Where would a person find "Paw Paw's" at? The cake sounded good .Martha Many years ago I lived in the country on a very small lake in Southern Michigan. It was located in a large "hollow" or bowl shaped area, with the hills covered in woods. The soil was quite rich as it received all the runoff from the surrounding hills. We used to walk in the woods all the time and pick wild berries, and it was on one of these walks in the fall when we smelled an over-poweringly sweet smell. Following it to its' source was easy and when there we saw these oblong, fat-banana looking things....mostly over ripe. Not knowing what it was, we picked one and took it back to show to the oldest resident of the area, a lady, who knew instantly that it was a Paw Paw, and told stories about making pies, custards, etc. out of them. They were past prime, so it was the next year before I actually tasted one and they were pretty good. I would think they'd grow almost anywhere if they could withstand Michigan winters.....and I suspect they need good, soil, perhaps even boggy. Once you've smelled old ones, you'll never forget it and that should lead you right to the tree!!! I would ask around at an outdoor market or farmer's market and see if anyone there knows where there might be trees.....or if there's a large nature perserve or park in your area, ask the people there. You might get lucky and find a tree. I still live within 30 miles of that lake and now you've got me interested again. I may have to take a drive soon. If I remember right, the fruit ripens in September or around that time. Good luck finding some. Rose
