Dear Gallia/Meigs Cousins: I'm just getting over my bronchitis in time to tell you the following: "About.Com Genealogy" puts out a newsletter with all the latest genealogy things. Genealogy Cruises seem to be the latest thing. Apparently, they have a line up of speakers and workshops while traveling different ports. Legacy Genealogy Cruise is the next one coming up this July. Rootsmagic family history cruise is sailing the Mexican Riviera this September and Wholly Genes Genealogy cruise is in October going to the U.S. Virgin Islands including Puerto Rico with a fabulous number of speakers. Seminar at Sea is that same week in October with the Royal Caribbean Genealogy Cruise. Wouldn't it be fun to have a Gallia County/Meigs County genealogy cruise? Teresa Herrmann Columbus, Ohio

There have been several posts concerning the Glenn surname, so I'll add this one. I have a John D. Glenn who married Mary Wise in Belmont County in 1825. They subsequently moved to the community of Raccoon Island in Clay Township, Gallia County. Their children: Elizabeth Jane Glenn (m. name Tintel) b. 28 Feb. 1826 Thomas James Glenn b. 24 Aug. 1827 Mary Ann Glenn b. 1 Mar. 1829 Alexander Ewing Glenn b. 31 Mar. 1831 Samuel Hanson Glenn b. 30 Mar 1832 Isabel Glenn b. 28 Mar. 1835 Susan Spriggs Glenn b. 9 Sep 1836 Keziah Wise Glenn b. 26 May 1838 Ann Wanless Glenn b. 4 Aug 1840 Huldah Shaw Glenn b. 1 Nov 1844 Peggy Frances Elender Glenn b. 5 Nov. 1846 The information was from a book "Our Pioneer Country Doctor from the Journal of Jesse S. Spriggs." This book was extremely reliable on all other matters, but this family just dropped off the face of the earth. They are on the Belmont County census of 1830, but I can't find a single trace of them after that. I thought I would find them on the every name 1850 census by using the children's names, but not one hit. I know there was a Glenn family in Huntington Township, but still have no idea if they are connected with them. Is this family familiar to anyone? Hi Guys! Hey, I know a few of you visit the OHS archives from time to time. I would appreciate it if someone could look up an obituary of Thomas Sawyers. He died March 26, 1863, in Gallia County. I have checked the Gallipolis Journal (available on microfilm at the library), but the April 9th paper is missing. I'm betting since he lived in the county for nearly 60 years, and was a justice of the peace who married dozens of people, that there'd be a write up about him, and perhaps a bit of a history? I still have a chance with the Gallipolis Dispatch (Gallia) Date: 1861-1868 Anyway, I'm not in a hurry or anything, but if anyone gets a few minutes while they're there anyway, would you PLEASE look at the Gallipolis Dispatch for his obituary. If you notify me ahead of time I will even arrange to help pay gas. Thanks, Linda.
Matthew D. Friend, I don't have any definitive documentation of the following information but I did find your query interesting since it pertains to FRIEND and WHITSOL/WETZEL. If your interested you can read what is below, some of the info I've gathered about some of the Wetzel's and associated families. My info below will not give you an answer but along the way if you should happen across something or a name mentioned it might give you a point of reference to possibly check back to. I am curious about how Whitsol/Wetzel ties into your line. Karen I don't have PERAGAN but I do have VERIGAN in my tree from Gallia, Jackson, & Athens Co's if that means anything to you. Francis "Frank" Verigan b July 1822 came from Germany, his wife Hannah from PA. Daughter Eliza married Edward Simmers d. Athens Co. From what I have, my Wetzel's came from Germany to PA, however, I did come across a Revolutionary Pension record I think for an Abraham....I had a computer problem, lost some of my notes....apparently when he was young he was brought from PA to VA by his father. This could explain the possible connection between the Wetzel's of PA and the Wetzel's of VA. Hezekiah Frazee/Frazey b 1758 m Catherine FRIEND b 1767 (this I found on the web). She was once the wife of Peter Aleshire, one of the pioneer Baptist preachers of this county." I have little information about this Wallace line. I'm looking for the parents of James Wallace b abt 3/1793 VA d. 1/21/1878 Gallia Co. and also the name of his 1st wife. His 2nd wife Martha "Patsy" Russell Aleshire Wallace was a daughter of Enoch Russell Sr. & his wife Ruth, and also a sister to Randal & Enoch Russell Jr. Martha "Patsy" Russell was b abt 1795 in NC, most likely Rockingham Co., she d abt 1/14/1878 Gallia Co......Huntington? It appears as though the children of James & his 1st wife were: Hulda Jane m. John White, Phebe K. m. George W. Folden, Rebecca m. James M. Warren, Sarah Ann m. Charles Davis, & Elizabeth. I also have James H. and/or Harrison, and did have John S. as a speculative son of James Wallace. I don't have access to Gallia Co. marriages or the 1850 census anymore but James & Martha Wallace were 1860 & 1870 in Huntington, Gallia Co. 1860 Huntington, Gallia Co., OH Census Living in the home of James and Martha is Pheby K. 15, Charles Bishop 11, Martha L. Tamar? 15 1870 Living in the home of James and Martha is John White, wife Jane, and children. I also would like to find the obit for his wife Martha "Patsy" who died the week prior which might help to clear up some of my questions. Any information is appreciated. Thanks, Karen
As far as I understand it Charles Newton Webster Oiler is one person. Some of my family is wacky, I named my son James Leland Ray Baldinger. We call him Jimmy. Charles was called Charlie. Yes, there are abstracts of wills and estates for that year. Check galliagenealogy.org for publications and we can also check the probate cases for you in our office. Henny Evas "Matthew D. Friend" <blindgenealogist@gmail.com> wrote: Hi Gallia County Listers: Does anyone know if there is any books that have transcribed all the early civil/probate/common pleas court from 1820-1830? I am trying figure out how or why my 3rd Great Grandfather, Andrew FRIEND have given the family land to Andrew FRIEND and Madeline WHITSOL, who sold the land in 1825 and then disappeared. I have found an Andrew FRIEND in Jackson County, however, his age is rather off from the ages of the children of Andrew FRIEND and Elizabeth PERAGEN. So I am trying to figure out whether this Andrew and Elizabeth could have came to Indiana together before he suddenly died along the way or in Indiana and just gave the land to Andrew and Madeline. Or Andrew FRIEND died and Elizabeth asked son Andrew FRIEND to sell the family land (because he is the man of the family at the time and Nicholas was living in Indiana in 1825). Then she moved to Indiana with her two youngest daughters, Harriet and Electa Ann. Basically, I am trying to weight all my options as to how to look at the unwritten story of what actually happened to Andrew FRIEND (the father) and the reason why Elizabeth moved to Indiana. Thanks for bearing with me on this conplex concept of my family history. correction on previous thread message. Clem & Nellie Craig spelling should be KRIEG. My apologies......... Here's another wrinkle. According to the 1930 Census, a William Glenn, age 23 is the stepson of Clem KRIEG, age 65, spouse is "Nelle" Krieg, age 37. Family resides in Logan, Hocking, Ohio. Ages match up with Nellie McMILLIN and son Willie Delbert GLENN. Perhaps Nellie married Clem KRIEG before Calvin Roberts? Need to find a marriage record for her marriage to William GLENN, and the ones to CRAIG and ROBERTS. I suspect that Willie Delbert GLENN's Feb 5 birthdate is prior to Nellie's marriage to William GLENN...reported as a month before his unfortunate death in Jul 1906. Still looking for collaborating evidence that Harrison Ellsworth GLENN & Mary E Peoples are the grandparents.
