Oregon Trail The Oregon Trail was the major route for immigrants traveling from the settlements on the edge of the eastern United States to the promised land of Oregon. It extended 2170 miles from its eastern departure points of St. Joseph, Westport, and Independence, Missouri, to its final destination in the Willamette Valley of present day Oregon. Much of its eastern segment followed the valleys of the Platte and North Platte Rivers. Some immigrants were bound for California instead of Oregon. They turned Southward from the Oregon Trail in what is now eastern Idaho and followed the California Trail through the Great Basin and across the Sierra Nevada into California. More than 350,000 people made the trek westward between 1841 and 1867. Their numbers swelled from a trickle in 1841 to almost 50,000 in 1852. They endured rugged country, searing heat, violent prairie storms, accidents, and the ravages of cholera. Their reward was the fertile farming country, the rich forests, and the mild climate of the fabled Oregon country. After gold was discovered in California in 1848, gold-seekers joined the westward bound pioneers. They left the Oregon Trail and followed the California Trail on to the gold fields. After 1847, Mormon pioneers also joined the throng, headed not for Oregon or California, but for their settlement near the Great Salt Lake in Utah. The Mormon Trail <mormon.htm> began at Omaha or Council Bluffs, and followed the North side of the Platte and North Platte Rivers until it passed Fort Laramie. There it crossed the river and joined the Oregon Trail for some distance before veering South into the Great Basin of Utah. Fort Laramie (and before it Fort John) was a major stop for immigrants traveling westward along the Oregon Trail. It was a resupply point where they could pause to replenish their supplies, repair their wagons, and perhaps even trade for fresh draft animals with which to continue their journey. It was here that the pioneers often had to decide which of their cherished possessions might have to be left behind in order that their oxen or mules could handle the rougher trail that lay ahead. - Internet The Oregon Trail wasn't scouted until the 1820's, and until the 1830's it was used primarily by trappers and explorers. 2. Robin Fife
    3. I guess this what I get for doing things late at night. The correct phone number for The Gallia County Historical and Genealogical Society is 740-446-7200. I made a miss slip of the fingers and hit 7299 instead of 7200. I'm sorry Robin Fife --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1. Re: [OHGALLIA] Oregon Trail
    2. As an Oregon resident, I find this fascinating. I think you're correct in believing Abraham and Barbara were not married on the Oregon Trail. The route wasn't scouted until the 1820's, and until the 1830's it was used primarily by trappers and explorers. Unless your Abraham was a trapper or explorer? Regards, Rachel Portland, OR

    2. Amaryllis Eagle Wallace Potter was born August 26, 1828 Huntington Township and died October 23, 1919 in Vinton. She married her first husband John Potter on May 20, 1850 in Gallia County. He was born January 28, 1824 in Ohio and died Mar 11, 1856 in Huntington Township and is buried in Potter Cemetery. They had three children-William, John, and Hannah. She married her second husband Nehemiah Grover on March 24, 1871 probably in Morgan Township. Both are buried at Clark Chapel Cemetery in Morgan Township. 1. Re: [OHGALLIA] HARVEY, John and Nancy - 1860-???
    2. Nancy Edwards
    3. Bingo - bet that's him. This is a direct line for one of my cousins, and the family lore has been that he committed suicide. Now that's interesting that the date is 1874 meaning he's alive in 1870 but I can't find him. Oh yes - I used wife's name, children's names, given names only, surname (with variant spellings) only - and nada! And interestingly, a couple of the children had different names so I thought for sure I'd get a hit with one of them, but no success as yet. Was that the extent of the newspaper blurb? Really appreciate your help. Regards, Nancy On Apr 11, 2008, at 7:14 AM, fkb wrote: > Nancy, > > Does this sound like it could be your John Harvey? 3. Nancy, Does this sound like it could be your John Harvey? If so, it shows that he was living in Mason County in 1874. Maybe they moved in 1870 before census was taken in Gallia County yet after they had been taken in Mason County. 1. [OHGALLIA] HARVEY, John and Nancy - 1860-???
    2. Nancy Edwards
    3. I've been trying to find John and Nancy (Ray/Rea) Harvey in 1870. They were living in Gallia Co on the 1860 Census, and I find Nancy and some of the children in Mason Co, WV on the 1880 Census. I can't find them at all as yet in 1870. In 1867 there is a marriage in Gallia Co between a Josephine Harvey and John Howarth, and the couple of interest did have a daughter named Josephine. I don't know if the Josephine who married John Howarth is their daughter, but if she is, then it seems likely that this family is still in Gallia Co in 1867. Does anyone know this family or have suggestions for other resources to search to find them in 1870? I've been all over Ancestry and Heritage Quest without success. I don't know if there might be some local sources of which I'm unaware. Thanks so much. Nancy Edwards nsedwards@bellsouth.net - Georgia -

    2. Debbie, Thanks for pointing out my mistake. There is something below Matilda's inscription that said "Milley d May 7, 1853 Here sleeps the mother of four sweet babes at her feet." It could be that Milley's date should read May 7, 1883 and that Milley was Matilda's nickname.
