POINT PLEASANT,WV. 2 MAR 1928 Throttles Blow Out on the Senator Cordill at Point Pleasant Dock Point Pleasant , March 3- Apparent failure of enginmen of the packet to drain condensed water from the pipes in the boiler room following an inspection was announced today as the cause of a mishap on the steamer last night which resulted in the death of two engineers and serious injury to another man. The victims, George McElhose , first engineer, of Detroit Mich.; and George Litman, second engineer of Orlando,Fla. , were killed by escaping steam when a throttle valve blew out as they sought to get up steam with which to move the Senator Cordill from the Enterprise dock here where it had been tied up for repairs for the last six weeks. Roy Roe , Gallipolis, a boilermaker and the third man in the engine room at the time of the accident, was badly burned about the body and internally as the result of inhaling escaping steam. His condition was pronounced as critical at the hospital today. The cause of the accident was fixed by a coroner J M Fadley a short time after the accident. The boat had been inspected a few hours previous by G G Thomas, federal steamboat inspector. Officers of the boat advanced the opinion that the throttle valve was blown out as a result of the live steam coming into contact with cold, condensed steam used in the inspection which had not been removed before the steam was turned on. Boat officers emphasizied there was no explosion. Robert Hesop, manager of the Point Pleasant Machine works and John Burnett,, an engineer employed by him , left the boiler room a few minutes before the mishap. No other damage was caused to the boat which was preparing to make a trip to Pittsburgh when the steam throttle blew out. The packett, Senator Cordill , is in the Charleston and Pittsburgh trade. A year ago the steamer ran aground in the Kanawha river just above the South Charleston bridge , and remained there several weeks before being floated. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! anyone have Evan Evans with wife Eliza Edwards? Lived in Ohio Twp. Thanks, Henny
Dear Mary: Evan Evans and Ann [whoever] married in Wales around 1847. Their first 3 children were born in Wales, then went on to Gallia County, and then Meigs. At least, according to 1870 census records. There are so many Evan Evans, I m not even sure that I have the right ones! Evan Evans is/was a very popular name ! I even used to know one who went to the First Baptist Church in Gallipolis when I was a tadpole in the 1950's and 1960's. As for MORGAN, perhaps around Morgantown, WV, or Fairmont, WV would be a place to look for Rachel. Perhaps your Evan found here there. On 5/4/2008, "Teresa M. Linda, Thanks for posting this. I saw the article too and was saddened as the Delta Queen was always enjoyable to see and hear through all my growing up years and to the present. It coming past my town always brought loads of people to view as it passed by. People even following it as far as they could to get that last view. Hope the boat can be saved. I for one will sign the petition. I still always go to the river to see it when it passes by. Hi Guys! I hope you all will forgive me for this plea, but as a little girl one of the pleasures of coming to our family reunion in Gallipolis was seeing the magnificent Delta Queen that was usually in the southeast Ohio area of the river. It was fun to listen to the calliope, and see the symbol of olden times leisurely going up to Pittsburg, or going back down to Cincinnati and points further on. You are correct in that there are two, Drummond-Folden and Drummond. I will see if I can learn which of these might have been Drummond-Allen at one time. Under Marker, "upright" is checked, and the location is given as Row 8, Grave #15. His Civil War service is noted on the card, but there's no indication there was a separate marker commemorating his service. It seems purely informational. The fact that the word "Allen" appears in conjunction with the name of the cemetery and the fact his name doesn't appear anywhere is kind of confusing. Perhaps that marker from 1913 simply deteriorated. Still I was wondering if anybody knew of a third cemetery with the word Drummond in its name. I can't find any burial records for his wife, Mary Corn Baker, either, so I bet she's in the same cemetery, wherever that might be! I did locate death records for both of them, but there's no cemetery information on Mary's (she died in 1890), and Drummond (Allen) appears on Andrew's, filed under "Andrew C. Baker".
