This is my first visit to the Franklin mailing list. I am hoping someone can tell me where to write for a pre-1908 death record. The year I am interested in is 1895. Would it be the Probate Court? Thank you. Kathy

Hi, Kathy, and welcome to the list! Yes, with any luck you should be able to find the record you're looking for at the Franklin County Probate Court. They began keeping records about 1867. If you go to the courthouse, the office is on the 22nd floor, and the records are on microfiche. You should also be able to obtain them at the Ohio Historical Society archives on microfilm. Just keep in mind that OHS is only open on Thursdays now. The address for writing to the Probate Court is 373 S. High St., Columbus, Ohio, 43215. Their website is: http://www.co.franklin.oh.us/probate I would suggest calling the certified desk with questions regarding fees, etc. at (614) 462-3899. Of course, these early records are a bit hit or miss. There are some I haven't been able to find, but it's definitely worth a try. Best of luck to you!
