Hello Kaye, In addition to the probate index I have the indexes to Franklin Co., Death records 1867-1908 and the death records. I looked up the Lovina GARET in Vol. 1, page 70. The name is indeed Lovina GARET/GARRET and the information was as follows: Report of deaths in Marion Twp. dated 1873 June 15 GARRET, Lovina; died 1873 Feb. 22; died in Marion Twp., status Married, age 29yrs __mo 4d., born in Marion Twp., Cause of death Dropsey. These death records from 1867 to 1908 were county records and consisted of reports made once a year. They are not like death certificates and I don't think the Board of Health has records for this time period. The counties were also reporting births in the same time period in the same way and I am sorry to say that there were a lot of births and deaths that were not recorded. The Madison Twp. 1875 Deaths report was dated June 3rd so if Louisa died in Madison Twp. on 22 June, her death would be in the 1876 report if it was recorded in Madison Twp. I looked throught the 1876 deaths for Madison Twp. and there were no GARES/GARIS entries. I tried the index next and the only GARES/GARIS entry I saw was for a _____ GARES recorded in 1881 (Vol. 1, page 151): Report date 1881 May 22 GARES, _______; Female, died 1879 July 15; died in Sabina, O.; status Single, age 2(wooops - yrs, mo, days?), born Sabina, O., Father William GARES & Mother Victoria, Cause of death ?Hurt? in Birth. Sabina is in Clinton Co. I also tried FHL film # 0285140 - Index Franklin Co., Ohio marriage index by brides 1803-1897 to see of Louisa had a second marriage. No entry for a Louise/Louisa GARES/GARIS between 1859 and 1875. You mention Fairfield Co. here and also posted to the Fairfield Co. mailing list. I tried the Index to Wills, Estates, Guardianships and Partitions Fairfield County, Ohio 1803-1900. No GARES/GARIS. The book Partition Record Abstracts Vol. II 1851-1900 Fairfield County Ohio has some GARIS people mentioned in the Partition record for land owned by John COURTRIGHT who died Oct 16, 1878. They appear to be heirs of John's Widow, Maria, but not John. Their names are Catharine GARIS, a sister of Maria (?ROBERTS?) COURTRIGHT, wife of Snyder GARIS of Columbus; Rebecca GARIS, a sister of Maria (?ROBERTS?) COURTRIGHT, whose heirs were Charles P. GARIS of Columbus, and John GARIS of Columbus. I have the microfilms for Fairfield County, Ohio death records 1867-1909 but did not have time to try that today.
