Grove City Record, January 1, 1932 Transcribed by Joyce Robinson SAMUEL SPILLMAN The death of Samuel Spillman, aged veteran of the Civil War, occurred at his home near Grove City last Saturday evening. Mr Spillman was 91 years old at the time of his death. Mr. Spillman had been a resident of the Grove City community, settling here immediately following the Civil War, as it is remembered by some of our oldest citizens. He was a man who was well thought of by a host of personal friends. He was one of the old fiddlers and has taken part in old fiddlers' contests since they have been so popular. With his sons and some others he was a member of a show troupe that entertained throughout this section of the state in former years, Mr. Spillman enlisted in Company C, 113th Regiment in the Civil War and was transferred to the invalid corps in March, 1964. He lost one finger by gunshot wound, and would probably have been killed had he not had a folded blanket on his back. He was shot while his regiment was in retreat, and a bullet penetrated twenty-four laps of his blanket and his clothing before its force was spent. Several weeks ago, with one of his sons, he was drugged and robbed of pension money which he had about the home. Since that time he has been in failing health. Surviving him are three sons, CHARLES, HENRY and EDWIN, at home; three daughters, Mrs. MARY MILLER, Mrs. GRACE MILLER and Mrs. MINNIE VIOLET, all of Columbus; fourteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the Pearl Wilkins funeral home, Monday afternoon, with Rev. McNeilan officiating. The funeral was under the auspices of the American Legion.
