    2. I need some guidance on locating birth records in Franklin Co. Ohio for the years 1810 and and 1838. Where would I look? I know they didn't start keeping records state wide until much later. I live out of state and plan on a visit soon...where does one look for records for Franklin Co. early years? (1810-1840 or so) thanks Cora

    3. Unfortunately, there are no official birth records until 1868 in Ohio. A combination of sources may help to make a fair estimate of the date of birth. These include tombstone inscriptions, census records, church records (christenings), family bible, and possibly guardianship records among others. After using a number of sources the date of birth may still not be exact. However, of greater importance is to establish proof of lineage, that is, to find the parents of the person you are looking for. A will or estate papers, and or a deed of partition may provide this proof. In the 20th century the birth and marriage certificates name the parents. Sometimes the death certificate provides the names of the parents. The further back you go the more difficult the task becomes. A valuable strategy is to use as many sources as possible. Donna M.
