    1. Clifton, Williams, Dalgarn, Miller, Biggins Burials
    2. On September 19, 2004, Maynard Martino, Sherry Elrod, and I (all descendants of John and Catherine Martino and their son, Joseph Martino, Jr., who are buried at Old Concord Cemetery in Jackson Township, Franklin County, Ohio), began a search for an old cemetery off S. R. 762 where we thought some Martino burials may have taken place. Located in a small woods on land currently owned by Carl Jewett, the small cemetery sits about 1/2 mile south of S. R. 762 in Scioto Township, Pickaway County, Ohio. More specifically, the lane to the cemetery lies just 1/2 mile east of the intersection of S. R. 762 and Matville Road and about 1/2 mile south of Jackson Township, Franklin County, Ohio, on land owned by Henry Gochenour (spelling?). On the west property line of 8026 S. R. 762 and about two miles west of Commercial Point, Ohio, is a half-mile long grassy lane back to the cemetery. In the middle of a cornfield in a small wooded glen we found a very old cemetery obviously and recently inhabited by a large herd of deer. The stones are broken and lying on the ground, and one is even lying under a large log which we could not move. With nothing to clean the stones, we did do rubbings, transcribe, and photograph what stones we could find; the readings are as follows: Mary, daughter of John and Sarah Miller died April 6, 1870 aged 21 years, 3 months, 2 days Charles Williams died February 23, 1832? 1839? aged 92 years In memory of Sarah Williams died October 16, 1838? aged _____ John L. Williams died August 27, 1849 aged 59 years, 5 months 27 days Eunice Diggins died January 27, 1869 aged 49 years (?), 2 months (?) (She was listed as age 41 on June 1, 1860; age on stone is hard to decipher) Liborn, son of Noah and Priscilla Clifton died February 10, 1851 age unclear (he is probably the Isaac L. Clifton, age 15, shown in the 1850 census) Ebenezer, son of Noah and Priscilla Clifton died December 25, 1851? age ? James Clifton and _____ Clifton, sons of Noah and Priscilla Clifton died March 2, 1852?? aged 2 years?? William C. Clifton, son of Noah and Priscilla Clifton died April 12 __ aged __ Sarah Dalgarn, Wife of James Dalgarn died April 31, 1844? aged 32 and 7 months? (She could be the Sarah Timmons who married James Dalgarn on January 24, 1842, in Pickaway County, Ohio) Other burials probably took place in this cemetery, but we found no stones for them. Since visiting the cemetery, I did some research on these families and found the following information about the families represented here: Eunice Diggins married Edward Doherty on July 6, 1837, in Pickaway County, Ohio. On June 1, 1860, Eunice DIGGIN, age 41, born Ohio, is listed in Scioto Township, Pickaway County, Ohio (P. O. Becketts Store) in the home of John THOMPSON, Age 47, single, born Ohio, Farm Hand. Eunice Diggins died in 1869. ==================== In 1830 Noah Clifton was aged 15-19, single, and listed as a head of household in Monroe Township, Pickaway County, Ohio (page 114 of census). Noah Clifton married Priscilla McGath on February 20, 1834, in Pickaway County, Ohio. By 1840 Noah and Priscilla Clifton were the parents of two sons and one daughter, all under the age of five, and listed in Scioto Township, Pickaway County, Ohio (see Image #247 Roll M704_420). Listed as neighboring households were those of John Williams, Jeremiah Williams, Littleton Bethards, George and Henry Gochenour, George and Kendall Eskridge, Wiley H. Beckett, to name a few. On June 1, 1850, Noah and Priscilla Clifton were still residents of Scioto Township, Pickaway County, Ohio, (Page 70, Roll M432_720) where Noah was coopering. and living beside Andrew J. Beavers and Henry Gochenour. In his household were the following members, all born in Ohio: Noah Clifton 40 OH Coopering Priscilla Clifton 30 Isaac L. Clifton 14 Levi Clifton 13 [m. Margaret Snyder on August 7, 1856 in Pickaway Co.] Sidney Clifton 12 female [m. Charles Kegg on August 6, 1858, in Pickaway Co.] Aaron Clifton 10 Minerva J. Clifton 8 Thomas Clifton 6 Sarah Clifton 4 Census Clifton 3/12 or 5/12 female (This was probably the Phoebe Clifton shown in the census taken on June 1, 1860.) John Terry 22 OH coopering In 1856 Noah and Priscilla Clifton became parents of a son, Jeremiah Clifton. He died on July 31, 1856, at age 1 month, in Scioto Township, Pickaway County, Ohio. He is probably buried in the same little cemetery with the other Clifton children. Source: Gateway to the West, Volume II, Pickaway County, Ohio, Death Records, 1856-1857, Page 46. On June 1, 1860, the Noah Clifton household's post office was Becketts Store (Commercial Point), and they were still living in Scioto Township, Pickaway County, Ohio (see page 18, Roll M653_1023): Noah Cliffton 48 OH Pricilla Cliffton 42 OH Aaron W. Cliffton 17 OH Minerva J. Cliffton 15 OH [m. Andrew Burget (Burgett) June 20, 1861, Pickaway Co.] Thomas Cliffton 14 OH Sarah Cliffton 13 OH [m. J. R. Johnson September 22, 1861, Pickaway Co.] Pheobe Cliffton 9 OH Allice Cliffton 4 OH Priscilla McGath Clifton must have died after June 1, 1860, but before June 1, 1870, for Noah Clifton was listed with his second wife, Nancy Clifton, on June 1, 1870, in Pleasant Township, Franklin County, Ohio. Household members appeared as follows (see page 726, Roll M593_1200, Image 661): Noah Clifton 56 OH Farm Laborer Nancy Clifton 40 OH Phebe Clifton 17 OH (Should her age be 19?) Allice Clifton 12 OH (Should her age be 14?) Amer Whiteman 10 OH Farm Laborer (Nancy's son from previous marriage) Clara Whiteman 7 OH (Nancy's daughter from previous marriage) On June 1, 1880, the Noah Clifton household was listed in Darby Township, Pickaway County, Ohio [Family 83, Enumerated June 10-11, 1880, Roll T9_1057, Image 0722], with members of the household shown as follows: Noah Clifton, Head 63 OH Toole Gate Keeper DE DE Nancy Clifton, Wife 50 OH Keeping House MD MD Alice Clifton, Daughter 22 OH Working at Farmhouse OH OH A. J. Whitmer, Stepson 20 OH Boarder OH OH On June 1, 1880, Noah and Priscilla's eldest surviving son, Levi Clifton, age 41, was living at Pleasant Mills, St. Mary's Township, Adams County, Indiana, with his wife, Margaret Snyder Clifton, age 42. Both gave Ohio as their birthplace. They had the following children living with them: Lina Clifton, age 17 Noah Clifton, age 15 David Clifton, age 12 Dolly Clifton, age 8 Grace Clifton, age 15/30 born May 1880 Noah Clifton died before 1891. According to the Columbus, Ohio, Directories for 1891-1892, his widow, Nancy Clifton was living at 385 1/2 South High Street. Where Noah and Priscilla Clifton are buried is a mystery to me; however, it would seem to me that Priscilla McGath Clifton, at least, was buried with her children at the little cemetery on the former Henry Gochenour farm just off S. R. 762 west of Commercial Point, Ohio, in Scioto Township, Pickaway County, Ohio, and just 1/2 mile south of the boundary line with Jackson Township, Franklin County, Ohio. If you are interested in copies of the photographs of the tombstones transcribed above, please e-mail me personally. Joyce Rarick .
