Anyone interested in reading about finding ancestors who spent time in asylum's, poor houses, or the like should read the book, Annie's Ghost by Stephen Luxenberg. It is a story about the author's aunt who he never knew existed. She died in a "mental institution" and he explains in the book how he found her records. You can buy it cheapest on Amazon.com. Good luck in your search! ________________________________ From: "ohfrankl-request@rootsweb.com" <ohfrankl-request@rootsweb.com> To: ohfrankl@rootsweb.com Sent: Wed, May 5, 2010 3:00:58 AM Subject: OHFRANKL Digest, Vol 5, Issue 73 Today's Topics: 1. In 1984, the Columbus Dispatch archives only shows three obituary results for the name Irwin. Delores Irwin, Mabel G Irwin, and Irwin Sumner Hott. I have seen people who have died in Lancaster and have had obituaries posted in the Columbus Dispatch, though. Hi, Kathy, and welcome to the list! Yes, with any luck you should be able to find the record you're looking for at the Franklin County Probate Court. They began keeping records about 1867. If you go to the courthouse, the office is on the 22nd floor, and the records are on microfiche. You should also be able to obtain them at the Ohio Historical Society archives on microfilm. Just keep in mind that OHS is only open on Thursdays now. The address for writing to the Probate Court is 373 S. High St., Columbus, Ohio, 43215. Their website is: http://www.co.franklin.oh.us/probate I would suggest calling the certified desk with questions regarding fees, etc. at (614) 462-3899. Of course, these early records are a bit hit or miss. There are some I haven't been able to find, but it's definitely worth a try. Best of luck to you!
