The more proper term for Grandmother is baka Link to a good Croatian to English, English to Croatian dictionary. Yes there was a fair sized Croatian community. However at the turn of the last century cities such as Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago, NYC had much larger communities.... For example Cleveland has 2 Croatian Churches one Roman Catholic the other Byzantine Rite Catholic, and at one time a half dozen lodges. We still have the churches, Lodges are down to about 4, we have the largest Croatian Hall in the US (including a public restaurant inside the hall), a Museum, a large picnic center in the country, 2 soccer fields, and several Croatian restuarants around town. Joso would be a diminutive of Josip English Josef. Here is John ZUBOVIC Name: Giovanni Zubovic Arrival Date: 24 Jun 1913 Birth Year: abt 1884 Birth Location Other: Barbat Former Residence Barbat, next of kin his wife Luce Age: 29 Gender: Male RaceĀ: Dalmation Port of Departure: Trieste Port of Arrival: New York, New York Ship Name: Carpathia Destination to his newphew Sime (sounds like shemay Simon in English) ZUBOVIC at He was travleing with Vicko (veechkoh, Vincent) and Marko ZUBOVIC all were from Barbat 2015 Parsons Ave Cols. OH The root (no pun intended) of ZUBOVIC is the word zub, which means... tooth... OVIC ending means son of. Looking at Lucia's (lootseeah) manifest she was born at Pag and the children at Barbat. Lucia (Lucy in English) must have been from Pag town, while her husband and children were from across the bay at Barbat, but still on the Island of Pag I believe that Barbat has been renamed and is now called Zubovici.... Otok Pag (Island Pag) is known for a delicous ewe's milk cheese, evaporative salt collection (which was fought over in ancient times) and Paski Cipka (Pag Lace) which is believed to be descended from Venetian Lace http://pag-tourism.hr/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=66&Itemid=93&lang=en Oh and mentioning Venice... Pag and much of the coast was ruled by Venice for a few centuries... thus the Italian influence in the given name ... Giovani... Marco POLO is thought (at least by Croatians) to have come from the Island of Korcula... where the current phone listings show many Di Polo families. When we had our Heritage Group in Venice we visited the old Dalmatian (sailors) building where we saw many Italianized Croatian surnames and given names. The manifests indicate they filed for US Citizenship in the 1930s (it is the cryptic writing over the occupation column) http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/manifests/occ/ I have taken my Heritage Tour groups to several Islands including Pag in 1999 Robert Jerin Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There were enough they formed a Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge on the south end, where most Croatians lived. But there were not enough to justify a Croatian Church. Many worked for Buckeye Steel Castings which manufactured railroad car wheels and axles. The company was owned or partly owned by John D.
