I have tried to get in touch with you for some time, but your request for information was a few years earlier than I when I found it. At that time you were looking for "Uncle Ed's" family members from St. Clair County, MO. My grandmother, Rose Lily, was his sister and, of course, her father was Lemuel L. and Mary Elizabeth Cummins Frazell was her mother. I do hope that you will find this message. I have joined a genealogical society and am eager to track down our family members. How thrilled I would be to find out that our ggg-grandfather fought in the American Revolution. I didn't know about the land grant in Ohio, etc., until after I read your message. I will be so delighted to work with you to complete and document our line, if you have not yet done so; but would feel so blessed if you have some any of our history that you would share. Thank you so much. Peggy Smith, my email is psmith309@comcast.net. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. After suffering much pain and bravely battling complications post-hip replacement surgery, Howard passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on South Detroit, where he received excellent care. As a six-year old during the Great Depression, Howard sold newspapers for two cents each, earning a penny for selling three papers. Since his father died of pneumonia when he was only nine, he worked hard to help support his family with a mother and nine siblings. Howard attended Libbey High School, Toledo, Ohio. He retired from Columbia Gas of Ohio as a gas meter engineer following 47 years of service. Howard was a WW II veteran who volunteered to serve in the U.S. Navy as a sonar operator on the U.S.S. Huse, part of the Hunter Killer Group, whose mission was escorting and protecting their aircraft carrier; also protecting merchant and supply ships sailing to and from Europe from German submarines in the Atlantic. This past year, he was e-mailing his former shipmates from his laptop. Howard was a member of (Calumet) Northern Light Masonic Lodge for 62 years, becoming a Master Mason in 1947. Howard especially enjoyed boating on Lake Erie, fishing, hunting, and all sports in general. He also enjoyed playing his Gibson guitar, listening to jazz, playing cards, the challenge of repairing almost anything, and yearly fun-filled home holidays and family vacations to several Michigan lakes. Howard was a self-sacrificing, humble man who loved helping others unconditionally. Howard's wife of 52 years, Margaret A. Franklin (Mardi), a retired registered nurse from the former M.C.O., preceded him in death on December 23, 1998. The youngest of nine siblings, he is the last to pass. Most of his seven sisters and one brother lived well into their nineties, as well as his mother, who reached the age of ninety-nine. Howard is survived by his daughter, Patti A. (Chuck) George; son, Bill (Jeanette) Franklin; grandchildren, Lindy and Steven George, Jenny (Luke) Mortensen, Jeff Franklin, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements will be private for the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Avenue. Memorials may be made to Church of The Cross United Methodist Memorial Fund or Hospice of Northwest Ohio. www.walterfuneralhome.com Published in Toledo Blade from June 17 to June 18, 2010 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Would be interested in the a picture of Mary Ann Distelzweig if you do or if you know how I may be able to get ahold of one. Do not live in Columbus myself. Contacted the school and they are all closed up for the year and may or may not have it. She was born in Feb of 1920 so it may be 1938 when she graduated too. Check the county where he lived..there was usually record of what happened to orphans. It was common to use these schools for orphans...or the child could have been so trautimized by events in his life, he seemed feeble minded. --- On Thu, 6/10/10, gc-gateway@rootsweb.com <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> wrote: From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [OHFRANKL] Ohio Institution for Feeble Minded To: OHFRANKL-L@rootsweb.com Date: Thursday, June 10, 2010, 11:35 PM This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. He was not feeble minded, so I am wondering if they just put orphans there when they had no other choice. His parents were from South Carolina and he had no family here or there. Here's a Google Map link of the address, and a search for "schools" nearby: http://tinyurl.com/33jlmu2 East is the nearest HS, and I'm pretty sure it was already running by 1920, but I'm not sure. http://tinyurl.com/37epysm is the link to the East HS website. Principal's contact info is there. Nothing helpful about the history. I did see that East was called Joseph Sullivant HS for a time, from 1922 to 1923. http://www.publicschoolreview.com/school_ov/school_id/61976 seems to say that East was built in 1922. The Wikipedia page says the same thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_High_School_(Columbus,_Ohio) You may end up wanting to contact Columbus City Schools for more info. I checked the Wiki page, but couldn't figure out what school she might have attended. If Central wasn't open, or East, I'd say South, but I'm not sure when South opened. Hello, I'm looking for any desc of Myrtle or Muriel (MILLS) LINTHWAITE who was born in Syracuse, NY in 1873, married Owen Linthwaite & lived her married life in Columbus, OH. Myrtle/Muriel died in Columbus on 01-02-1963, but for some reason, her death cert isn't listed on the LDS Family Research Site. Since death certificates in Franklin Co. are $25, is there another way to possibly obtain the names of her parents? I've been unable to locate anyone researching this family. I know her father was either MILLS or MILES & the mother was either BENNETT or BENEDICT. The rest of the family seems to have stayed in Syracuse. The parents went by Miles & the children went by Mills so I'm hoping that Myrtle's d/c will answer the question. I'm researching this Mills/Miles line out of Onondaga Co. NY for a friend who is the gr granddaughter of Myrtle's sister, Mildred Viola. Thank you, Diane Ethridge Conroe, TX
