Surnames: Mullen, Chapin Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/yYB.2ACI/14949.1.1 Message Board Post: Ann, Are you the same "Ann" who has communicated with Kathy White in the past? She and I are definately cousins. When I was at the Nation Archives last time, I saw the Chapin surname amoung the Delaware County names listed as having served in the Civil War. Have you tried researching the military history of the family. Do you still have Ancestry.com? I would look there. I sent service records to Kathy a few months ago. Not much info in a service record. Pray for a pension record! You should also check for a widow's pension record. I found a wealth of info in Joseph Mullen and his wife's pension file. I am sure you would find your answers there. Let me know if you need any help. I am still digging for the Native American information. I have the names but finding them documented the way we need them to be is the hughest challenge. Thanks, Tina

She is the daughter of Riley Monroe Chapin born 1810 in New York - a product of a Chapin who mariried a Native American. He is my "road-block". He was one of the 1st land owners in Deleware County - and then moves to Franklin. We think perhaps his wife was from Ohio - name Silvan? Can not find a marriage certificate- birth or death certificate. Am so proud of the Native American blood and would love to trace this. Tell me what you know! Ann

    1. Columbus, OH - Wiggins, Lane, Maloney, Fielding
    2. James and Caroline Shultz
    3. I am trying to track down a hunch of mine. In 1870, in Columbus, OH, two families are living in the same household: the first family is John Wiggins (28), wife Mary (22), son John (3), and daughter Kate (1). The other family is James Fielding (28), wife Kate (21), son John (1). Both wives are born in Ireland... John Wiggins is a brick moulder and James Fielding is a stone mason. My theory is the wives are the Maloney sisters.... The Maloney story is that late in the 1850's or early 1860's, the mom and sisters came to America following her husband who was waiting in NY... However, the mom died on the ship and was buried at sea. The girls were taken in by another family on the ship (Auntie Dee??). They looked for the father in NY for a period of time and could not locate him. They moved on to Columbus and Kate Maloney eventually married James Fielding. The Fielding Family is my line.. I followed the Wiggins family through the censuses to see if I could some way verify my information. In 1900, daughter Kate/Catherine Wiggins is listed as wife of Frank X Lane, their children, Harry B, Marie W, Neal R, and Frank, Jr. Also, there is a Frank S. Wiggins, listed as a brother-in-law to Frank X Lane, making him Kate's brother. I found a listing for the 1890 City Directory for Columbus. There is a Frank Lane who is driving (wagon) for the Fielding family's grocery store on 1st Street. (This is for Frances Lane, *angela822@juno.com - no longer working* who posted some info on the Lane Mailing List.) And when I located them in 1920, they do show that Frank Lane, 4, grandson is living with them, verifying your story that was posted on Ancestry.com LANE message board back in 1999. Is anyone out there that is searching any of these lines??? Supposedly Frank X Lane was a boxer in Columbus, OH... I would love to be able to find Kate Maloney's sister... Caroline El Paso, TX

    3. Dianna, I'm very interested in what you are saying about the Candle name. When some of my family came to Ohio in 1803 via Columbiana County, the Altman's, Miller's and Candles were all in Columbiana County. I have not been able to reconcile the Candle name. Most of the Altman's and Miller's came from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. 3. Mary, Thank you with your offer. There really ought to be some way which works from this pc as I have many for whom I search. These are the 4 main names. I know for sure they died in Columbus or right outside of it. VONVILLE, VONWILLE, VON VILLE all 3 names used, ALL in Franklin County. No matter the spelling they are related and come from 2 brothers, no others with this name moved to Columbus area. Seeking all, all are relatives. Came 1889. FEARING Minnie Fearing married George Eli BROWN and Joseph A. GEORGE; her FEARING father and siblings also were in Franklin County, so, searching any and all FEARING. GRIFFTON GRIFTON Earl, his brother Ralph and whoever his parents were, and other siblings, if any. Supposedly they were rich. Supposedly he married Mabel/Mable/Minnie/Annabelle BROWN (daughter of Minnie FEARING BROWN GEORGE) and had a child between 1904 and 1908. (she later married _*___GIBERSON and had 9 children by him.) 3. I have a Kendall genealogy called Peter Kandel and his descendants...I checked for Frederick and Elizabeth....they are not there. I might give you some clues...Our Peter Kandel lived in Somerset County, Pa. and married Elizabeth Drushel....and moved to Holmes County, Ohio...I think in that order. There are many common names with your Kendalls. Miller, Schrock..these are all Amish and Mennonite names. You might find something about them in the church records. A large community of Amish/Mennonites is still in Holmes County. My Kendalls (actually my husband's) then moved to Howard County, Indiana. I don't know if Peter could be connected to yours, but I would be interested in hearing what you find out. I am still searching for Peter in Pa. You also might find something in the John Hostetler genealogy as there are a lot of Kendalls there. 3. Sallie - The horror stories go on and on. Here in Gallia county, when I searched for my husband's ancestor, I was informed the stones were ground up and put on the road!! When I get discouraged I remember a man who told me people thought he was crazy but he was sure that ancestors helped us find them WHEN THEY were ready for us to find them!! I was sceptical but the older I get the more I suspect he may be right!! Then there's the story of Carol Montrose who searched for her grandpa's stone, and finally just told him to help. And some bird (I can't remember what it was) flew down and landed on his stone!! So who knows? It took me 30 yrs plus to find my immigrant CRIST. 3. Dear Margaret, My husband's uncle, his dads' twin brother, died. When his family went to the Cemetery to see his newly placed stone they were horrified to find his name spell WRONG. They left it! Our friends stone is gray with a horrible streak on the front, ruining the stone. They kept it. Another friend bought their stone, had it engraved-names, birth dates. When they went to check it, in the Cemetery, she was horrified to see a death date under her husband's name. They insisted it be changed. They did. It was hard to tell where it was repaired. In time that spot disappeared. My 5 great grandfather's death date and age placed him being born AFTER his father's death by several years. I thought it was wrong but Delaware Orphans Index doesn't list him as a minor child survivor. In 1802, he needed a guardian as he was 3 with mother dead. His age of 3 proves he was born 2 years after listed father's death. I know who his guardian was-that's as far as I can get. Still don't know his real father. Sallie

    3. Dear Leona, I had the monument company put my husbands complete US Navy Records-dates-numbers-ships' name, his duty, etc. on the BACK of our double stone. On the front, above his name, is the old steam engine alerting others that he was a Rail Roader. This is in an IOOF Cemetery outside of Walton, IN. You can tell, just by looking at many of the stones, what the man's occupation was by the pictures on their stones. Yesterday my daughter, Tee, and I 'toured' the quaint Port Isabelle, TX City Cemetery. There we saw several stones with Shrimper Boats etched on them. Of course, we knew these men were fishermen. All my life I have enjoyed Cemeteries, never playing in them, just looking and discussing the names, dates, etc. My husband, daughter, and I toured Cemeteries and Battlefields, including Cemeteries on our many vacations. You can learn where ever you go. Keep an open mind, check with your own records. Etchers are human, too, and dates can easily, altho they shouldn't be, transposed. Sallie

    3. I have some problems with etched in stone. These are clues only. My great grandmother's stone in Licking co says she died in 1908. I looked for years, attempted to find a death certificate. While looking at newspapers for something else - guess what? Her death notice and obit was there in 1906!! SO - clues only. 3. Just for fun: We've all heard the saying that some fact is "etched in stone," and most of us have probably wished that our ancestors had left PROVABLE facts etched on their tombstones. Once in a while they did. You can see an example of that on the tombstone of Samuel Davis, buried at Dublin Cemetery (aka I.O.O.F. Cemetery). Even his wife's inscription gives more than the usual amount of information. And the wonderful thing is that these are contemporary inscriptions, done at the time of their deaths or soon after; they aren't on tombstones erected many years after their deaths by descendants who may or may not have the facts right. 3. Larry: This is accurate information and easy to use. I tried it and got my grandfather's but just his death date-which is right but no obit. It says at the bottom to get the obit to call a number which isn't toll free. But interesting, never-the-less. Sallie.
