    1. RE: [OHFranklin] obit for Andrew Backus - cabinet maker of Colunbusi

    3. Ok, I just checked by the location in the cemetery and Andrew Backus's name is spelled Bacus, Andrew. He was born Oct 3, 1790 in East Middleboro, Ma and died May 9, 1880 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio. His father was Simon Backus and his mother was Hannah with no surname for the mother. He died from Old age and the Undertaker was Taylor & O'Harra. He was buried the 11th of May 1880. You might find the records for Taylor & O'Harra at Graumlich & Sons on South High Street since A K Graumlich started in business with Taylor. Joe PS Sorry about the name spelling but that is the way it was in the record. I shall do a Backus/Bacus correction. -----Original Message----- From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com [mailto:gc-gateway@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of wildflower1221@yahoo.com Sent: Sunday, August 22, 2004 8:35 PM To: OHFRANKL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [OHFranklin] obit for Andrew Backus - cabinet maker of Colunbusi This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. 1. NEEL Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old postcard photograph of Marjorie NEEL of Columbus, Ohio which was probably taken in 1915. The postcard was mailed to Mrs. Scott WILSON of Midland, Michigan by Nellie NEEL of 90 N. Eureka Ave and notes that Marjorie's photograph was taken up at "Mamma's". Nellie also mentions that she ran into Ruth ELY RITCHIE and her husband when Nellie was home last and that they were at the SAMPSON's. The postcard is dated June 15, 1915 and postmarked in Columbus, OH on the same date. I'm assuming the Marjorie is about one year old at the time the photograph was taken as she is in baby carriage or pram. The postcard also bears the name of "J.W. Croft View Co., Findlay, Ohio" which I'm assuming is the postcard company or photographer. I'm hoping to locate someone from this NEEL Family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    3. Hi, Franklin County Listers! If you subscribe to an active list like this one you begin to see the same information posted again and again. Of course, there's nothing wrong with that, especially when it's something that helps many people on the list. But I'm often surprised that many list members apparently don't know about the list archives. You can search and browse nearly all RootsWeb mail lists and all messages ever sent to the list. You can use the Interactive Search (search for a specific items/words) at http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl OR You can browse the various messages by going to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ I have, more than once, found the information that I was looking for without having to subscribe to a particular list. I've found obituaries for relatives that SKS had posted to the list. I recently found a lady willing to do lookups in an obscure Pennsylvania cemetery. Her message was three years old, but I wrote to her (half expecting the message to be returned) and less than two hours later I had the information I asked for. Happy hunting! To use the website: (& not incur any long distance charges on your phone) You go online to this addy, go to CML databases on left of page, next page- click 'Columbus News Index', type "your ancestor name" at search box of next page, and click GO. This is the page I got for your obit: http://www.columbuslibrary.org/cmlcnix/searchresults.cfm Then email them using "Ask a Librarian" on their home page. Tell them the name, newspaper, date, page, etc and they will email you back the obit. (Mine have arrived in an hour or so!) According to the librarian, you are permitted to request up to 5 per day for no charge--if they send them via email to you. Snail mail may be different. Email seems fine to me, as it is a scan of the actual newspaper article. This is a great service. Best of luck. 1. Re: [OHFranklin] early birth records
    2. wolfma8518
    3. Unfortunately, there are no official birth records until 1868 in Ohio. A combination of sources may help to make a fair estimate of the date of birth. These include tombstone inscriptions, census records, church records (christenings), family bible, and possibly guardianship records among others. After using a number of sources the date of birth may still not be exact. However, of greater importance is to establish proof of lineage, that is, to find the parents of the person you are looking for. A will or estate papers, and or a deed of partition may provide this proof. In the 20th century the birth and marriage certificates name the parents. Sometimes the death certificate provides the names of the parents. The further back you go the more difficult the task becomes. A valuable strategy is to use as many sources as possible. Donna M. 3. Hi! Try LDS - <familysearch.org>. They have extracted many of the early marriage records in Ohio. Otherwise you need to know the county, as the marriage records are recorded in Probate Court in each county.
