Staci, It looks like you may already have more look-ups than possible to find in one day but that may be because I find it so very complicated to use microfilm readers. Anyway, just in case, I would love to have my GGrandfather's obituary. George Henry b. abt. 1807 died March 12, 1886 or 1887 (two different years reported on his death certificate - not sure if one is the date it was reported and the other his death or what). He lived in Franklin County. Thanks so much for the offer to do this for folks on the list. It is very kind. Ok I found 263 McDowell St., on the 1930 census from ancestry.com District 84, Ward 9 Block 171 The person living there in 1930 is not William Earl Johnson so maybe he lived there later. The person whose name is hard to read rents for $10.00 month The Cahill's own 423 W. Rich St., which is around the corner and walking distance to McDowell St., according to present day mapquest.com The renters name looks like Nelker or Helker, first name looks like Byron maybe born Alabama he is listed as head then under him is a boarder named Linda wright or Fright. So maybe when the city directory people were walking around they went to 263 McDowell St., and no one was home to answer their questions and they never went back. Hope this helps. I will send you the download directly of the census page for 263-265 McDowell St., so you can read it yourself. Lindsey

My grandfather, William Earl Johnson, lived at that address prior to marrying my grandmother. There is no listing of his living at that address in the 1933 Columbus City Directory. The Ohio Historical Society told me that 263 did not exist that it skiped from 262 to 264. The people that owned that property was Michael and Katie Cahill.

On the 1910 U.S. Census there is a column labeled "Whether survivor Union, Confederate Army or Navy". I'm trying to determine if my GGGrandfather was in the Civil War or not. It has the number 5 in this column. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to the numbering (or at least not one apparent to me) so I'm confused. Two men listed before his family have the number 3, and 4 (in that order) and a 5 out beside my William Barr. William's son, listed just below him, age 21 (not possibly old enough for the Civil War) has a 6 in his column and a younger son has a 9??? If there is some numerical assignment system for this column, please let me know. I don't know what the 5 means. In case you would want to look for some type of numbering system he is located at the following: 1910 U.S. Census, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, Enumeration District 122, Ward 8, Precinct D, Sheet 3A, Image 5. Columbus has 8 pages of enumeration districts. If you select page 5 you will see Enum. Dist. 122 and it is image 5. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks Marjorie, that was a great civil war site. Now, would anyone know of a similar Revolutionary War site, to search for ancestors? Thanks again for the site, Margaret

Hi, Contribution to Civil War discussion...There are rosters of men who served in the Civil War from Ohio at the Ohio Historical Society, the State Library and the Main Library on Grant St. downtown. At the Ohio Historical Society there is a Grave Registration File which names and provides info on any soldier who died in Ohio and served in various Wars. Many states have a variety of ways of recording those who served. It might be valuable to look for information in the state where your ancestor resided when he enlisted. Donna Wolf
Hi! There is an index for the Naturalization records at the Ohio Historical Society, along with copies of the records. Unfortunately, most of the records do not provide much information except the name and date of Naturalization or date of first papers (Declaration of Intent). The info in Naturalization records vary greatly from state to state and county to county. The info is somewhat better after 1880 and much better after 1906. Hi Do please note that this site is incomplete. It is a huge project which requires many hours of work. In time names will be added. Just now, not all soldiers have been listed, so if your relative is not listed, that does not rule out the fact that he or she did serve. Regards, Sherry "Marjorie L.
