Hi, The publications of the Franklin County Genealogical and Historical Society, ..will abstracts, cemeteries and more can be found on the Franklin County web site under the headings publications and new publications. Prices are included. Also, there is an E-mail address provided if additional information is needed. A one-hour research of the library sources at the Society can be requested. If anyone is interested in finding out what kinds of information are available at the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus go to their web site: http://www.ohiohistory.org. Click Resources, Archives Library and then on-line catalog. Type in Franklin County under subject. There are researchers who will examine these sources for you for a fee. If you examine the sources and determine exactly which ones might be valuable, a researcher can be hired to examine just those sources, to save money. A list of researchers is available under Resources. The library has the original marriage records, wills, naturalization records and much more for the county. Index to the death certificates for Ohio: 1913-1939 is on-line at this site. It is a very valuable resource. If a death certificate is located you can request a copy (needed info: name, county, YEAR and CERTIFICATE NUMBER, which are part of the index. Turnaround time is months because of staff cuts. One of the researchers can obtain a copy in far less time, for about the same cost. The Ohio Historical Society also has an excellent newspaper collection. Once an exact date of death is found, obituaries can be obtained. Note: In the 1800s the obits were virtually non-existent or one or two lines, unless the person was a prominent member of the community. Obituaries became more detailed in the 20th century. An index to some of the Death records at the Ohio Department of Health (20th century) is on-line on Ancestry.com or Ancestry.Plus if your library has it. Search all databases, Ohio.

All, I'm new to this list and would like to say hello!! I'm from Montgomery County and most of my reseach has been in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. However earlier this year I found that a cousin to my ancestor from Pennsylvania came to Ross County, Ohio. The name Scholderer is not a very common name, and is easily mis-spelled. I have seen it, as: Scholderer, Scholder, and Schoulder. The Pennsylvania spelling is Sholder, with varions: Shoulder, Shoulders, and Sholders. But the Scholderers'of Ohio kept the original spelling of Scholderer. Jacob F. Scholderer came to America after 10 March 1817 and before his marriage to Margaret Miller on 14 January 1821, in Ross County, Ohio. They had a few children that I still must complete some research on this area, but he had two sons: John F. Scholderer, born about 1828, died 22 January 1868 in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio. The second is George Scholderer, born 18 August 1831, died 14 February 1864. It seems that George married Martha Phillips and John married Sophia ???? both from Chillicothe. In "The County of Ross" history, it shows a Lida Scholderer, daughter of John and Sophia Scholderer was married to one John H. Miller. John was the son of John and Mary (Demuth) Miller. This is about as much as I have on this family and thier descendants. So after all this has been said, I'm looking for any information that maybe out there about the Scholderer family and their descendants from Ross County, Ohio. I research both male and female lines, from the common ancestor. It should also be noted that there are present day Scholderers' located in Franklin County, Ohio and some other folks that are deceased in both Franklin and Meigs County. And I beleive that they are descendants of this Ross County Scholderer family. With the help of a cousin living today in Degerloch, suburb of Stuttgart, we have been able to trace these Scholderer lines back to Martin Scholderer (died 1635), native of somewhere near Remmingsheim, Kreis Rottenburg / Neckar, Duchy of Wrttemberg [present day state of Baden-Wrttemberg, Germany]. It is my hope that someone out there can shed some additional light on this family in Ohio. Thank you for your time, Kevin L. Sholder Don't wait to make your Son a great man. For all who are interested in St Vincent Orphan Asylum, my father in law found a most interesting article on what life was like at the orphanage. If you had relatives who lived there, here is a taste of what their life was like: "Typically, breakfast was cow brains, lunch was bread and butter, and dinner was stringy beef, pigs ears or pickled herring." Discipline was discussed as well. "Bedwetters were hauled into the yard or onto the floor and forced to stand before the other children with the wet sheet on their heads." You can find this article at: The Columbus Dispatch Name of article: "Orphan Asylum is long gone, but scars take time to heal" Date: April 1, 2001 Pages: C1 and C2 Also, the bad news, we were told that there was a fire in the 1960's that destroyed all the children's records. Hmmmm Regards, Donna Michigan
