Oh, My Gosh, I didn't know that Lazarus closed! Lazarus played a big part of my family life as my mother, grandmother and aunt all worked there. My happiest memories of Lazarus was going 'downstreet' with my grandmother as a little girl. We would ride the streetcar from E. Whittier St to shop at Lazarus. My grandmother, Mom, wore a fox collar which fastened with the fox head and tail. over her suit. She wore gloves to her elbows. Oh, how proud I was to be with her. I wanted people to think she was my mother so I was glad I called her Mom. We took our time looking in all the pretty departments. I especially remember the cosmetic department-don't know why. I don't know what department Mother worked in. We moved to Indiana when I was about 10. From 8th grade through high school I was the best dressed girl in my class. My Aunt Patty worked in Lazarus as a model. She was able to buy the clothes the models wore and the clothes from the mannequins very cheap. Once in awhile my grandfather, who was a conductor on Pennsy RR would bring his big black suitcase full of cloths Patty sent to me from Lazarus. I don't think I will ever be back in Columbus, don't really care now that Lazarus isn't there. Oh, well, I have my memories-no one can take them from me. Thank you, Barbara, for sharing with us. I'm one of those who never experienced the old downtown store--grew up in Denver, CO, and am a relative new comer to the Columbus area. Loved your mom's view of air conditioning! Just for the record, this is not one of my sites. I found it on the WOSU website (www.wosu.org). I just hope that they leave in online permanently as Lazarus, both the store and the family, have such a large place in Columbus history. Hi Leona Thank you so much for this wonderful site. I was going to purchase CD of that program but this is even better. This brings a lot of memories to me. My mother worked there from 1947 to 1963. I remember my first trip downtown to Lazarus on the streetcar by myself. It was a wonderful trip. Fit so big. Mother and I always had lunch together on Saturdays at the resturant on the first floor. I am going to print all of this information and put it in her folder I have on her. She would not have believed that Lazarus would ever close. Wish she was here. She passed away in 2001 at the age of 90. She said when air conditioning was put in at Lazarus it was going to take 10 years off of everyone's life. I have soooo many memories. Thanks for that wonderful job you have done on this. Really appreciate it. Leona, Thank you for the URL. I haven't lived in Columbus since 1960 but lots of my family worked there, shopped there and I especially enjoyed the store front window displays. We use to walk all over downtown Columbus but we never missed having lunch or gawking in the windows of Lazarus.
