That is how I was able to determine who his preceptor was. As for my allegations of Beach being vile, corrupt and evil I will attempt to substantiate my claims. As you correctly stated the Worthington Medical College was shut down due the arrest of the Franklin County Sheriff catching the body snatchers red handed. The school as you know simply moved to Cincinnati where is became the Cincinnati Eclectic Medical College. For the most part the same faculty and professors. The worst riot in Ohio history happened as a direct result of this college and the stealing of bodies. To me Homeopathic and Eclectic are just two words for alternative medicine. You are well aware that medicine in the early and mid 19th century was a fairly easy degree to obtain. By your own admission "That he may have obtained bodies for medical study would not be surprising (many medical students did so)" I think it is safe to say that anyone engaging in body snatching would be considered HIGHLY DISAGREEABLE and that is but one of the meanings of the word vile. And I contend that body snatching to the general public was indeed HIGHLY DISAGREEABLE. Because there was an Ohio State law ie 1841 "66.Sect. XIX. That if any person shall wantonly dig or take up any corpse or dead human body, buried or entombed in any cemetery or burying ground, either public or private, or shall attempt, so to do; or shall carry away from such cemetery or burying ground, any such corpse or dead body; or shall aid, assist, or be any way concerned, either in the attempt, or in digging or taking up, or in carrying away such corpse or dead body, as aforesaid; every person offending, in either of the aforesaid instances, shall, upon conviction thereof, be finded in any sum not exceeding one thousand dollars, or be imprisoned in the cell or dungeon of the county jail, and fed on bread and water only, not exceeding thirty days, or both, at the discretion of the court." Beach knowing violated this Ohio Law and in doing so fits the defination of corrupt. As for the word evil according to the dictionary it is "morally bad or wrong" If digging up someones loved one without permission and using it for dissection let alone being sold, is NOT morally bad or wrong I don't know what to tell you? Beach was indeed vile, corrupt and evil in every sense of the words. To say that "well it was just the way medicine was in the 19th century" would be to say that "well that is just the way Nazi Germany was in the 20th century ie killing of Jews. I find both of them equally replusive sir. I cannot understand you trying to justify Beach's vile, evil and corrupt ways. I would also remind you that NOT all medical schools used human cadavers in the 19th century however I will grant you that it was a common crime sadly to say. Almost all of the body snatchers would go on to become respected citizens however if their deeds were reported I wonder how highly thought of they would become? Under normal circumstances I would be more than happy to help you find your families genealogy. I would be willing to share what I have. However, your ancestor in my opinion helped destroy families and caused many heart aches to fellow citizens of the community. Perhaps the Good Lord has already dealt with this issue and Beach. However, if you are willing to donate all of your books entire proceeds to Ohio cemeteries that your ancestor helped to destroy in the name of medicine than I will be happy to release my information to you and I think you will be amazed of Beach's records and I happen to also have a diary that mentions his name in connection with the medical college. If this is agreeable to you than have an attorney draw up the paper work. If you will help right a wrong that has been committed in the name of science and history we will have a deal. But I don't think you will be agreeable to this as the same blood that went through Beach's veins, also flows through yours. I feel as though you are a TAKER and NOT a GIVER just as your ancestor was.

I must say I was quite taken aback. As Dr. Beach's biographer (book due out in the first quarter of next year), I would ask you "in the name of science" please to present evidence of your allegations. "Vile and corrupt evil man" is an awfully strong judgment--With what evidence do you make such a judgment? This judgment does not fit with any of the known facts of the man (and testimonies from those who knew him). I am genuinely curious and you will find that I have an open mind on the matter. It is known to history that the Worthington Medical College (Eclectic medicine, NOT Homeopathy) was finally attacked by a "mob" who did not like the school's procurement of cadavers for anatomical study (the state of Ohio expected physicians to work with the anatomy of live people, but provided no way for study with cadavers--as is done today in all major medical schools)--and they ! ultimately persuaded the state to revoke the school's charter. Dr. Beach evidently studied with some of the professors post-charter--I have circumstantial evidence of this along with Dr. Beach's published testimony. That he may have obtained bodies for medical study would not be surprising (many medical students did so). Of course this was (is?) a touchy matter . . . and the phenomenon of "body snatching" ran the full spectrum, from outright desecration to the legitimate needs of medical and surgical practice. Do you have evidence that Dr. Beach was personally involved in the procurement of cadavers?--and you mention that you have knowledge of his preceptor--if so I ask you please to cite your information and its source. Mr. Brooke, is it your personal judgment on these past occurrences that you express? If so, I respect your right to express your views and judgments of history, but if more than your personal judgments on your reading of history, please share your sta! ted knowledge of Dr. Beach with me (I will also send this message to y our personal e-mail, so that you can respond in private if you prefer). As his biographer, I do wish to learn what special knowledge you may possess, while respecting your currently expressed feelings on this matter that occurred so long ago.

I've been getting things regularly on Franklin, but some of the items have taken 3 days or more to show up on other lists. So, it appears they still have some problems. Though a few days ago, I believe I saw a post that all had been correct. Sandy
