I use this all the time at work. If you are using the Map Search option and nothing shows up, you can choose the Parcel Search, just type the street and you can check the house numbers that are close to what you're searching for. Sometimes the auditor's site lists address differently than a mailing address would be, especially if its on a corner or part of a double parcel. Click the Map/GIS option on the left then, you can click on each parcel near that to see if the address of the one you're looking for pops up. I use the auditor website every day at work (I work for an insurance company. We use the diagrams and the utilties map for the nearest fire hydrants and fire stations). Since we have customer in many states, I use this site to find any auditor or GIS mapping site for every county in every state http://publicrecords.netronline.com/ On 11/01/2008, GenealogyBug <[email protected]> wrote: > > The structure of the Franklin County Auditor's GIS site is, as far as I > know, unique, but all of the counties in Ohio have their own GIS systems, > or > are getting them. The structure of the Franklin County Auditor's GIS site is, as far as I know, unique, but all of the counties in Ohio have their own GIS systems, or are getting them. You can find them by going to http://www.caao.org/ then click on the link for GIS MAPPING. Most other states are instituting similar projects. My home town--Denver, CO, has similar property searches through the recorder's office as I recall. Sometimes finding sites like these can require time and lots of googling, but they're usually worth it when you find them. ;-) Leona ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sallie L. Nelson" <[email protected]> Too bad other cities don't have sites like this-or do they?
Roberta, Try leaving off the West or any form of West, using just the street name. Often the streets are still there, but the buildings are long gone. In some cases the street names have changed and in others the streets are gone because highways have been built. In 1900 and 1910 44 West Poplar/44 West University (one in the same) was very near the downtown business area in what is called the Short North. It is currently occupied by a 28 unit condominium. The address is 34 Poplar and will give multiple results with the same photo for all on the auditor's site. It is right across the street from Goodale park. This is one of the most historic areas of Columbus. Hi, If you enter an address and it says nothing is found does that mean that the street name may have changed and it is necessary to have that information or might it mean that the street no longer exists? I tried 44 West Poplar which was the address in 1910 and also 44 West University which was listed in 1900. This is a fabulous site. My Mother kept my little baby and child reading books with our addresses on them. When I sold my Indiana home in 2000 I had an auction sale. In my Cedar chest where these books which I sold . But first I copied the addresses. When I got my computer I put each one on the Franlin site and saw the homes we lived in when I was born, etc. What a thrill this was and still is. Some I remembered but not all, of course. They are now in my Family Research books. I also found my grands, my aunts, EVEN my aunts in the Columbus Historical German Village. Sadly, my grgrands home had been torn down, their bakery, too. Other homes in my German family were distroyed when that big road was built. And one I found on the other side of it. This is so facsinating. Too bad other cities don't have sites like this-or do they?
