I did a search on Ancestry.com and their index lists a 3 yr old James Kelly living with the family in Christian Kentucky. Do you have a page number for the 1850 census. Author: ghoecampbell Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.franklin/18281/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The following are taken from the above date's newspaper. FYI, there was a huge flood over night the night before incase anyone references it... "BUSEY TELLS WHAT BECOMES OF ONE-TIME NEWSPAPER MEN" By Harry F. Busey "Myself belonging to that great fraternity of former newspapermen, or journalists emeritus if you prefer, I feel somehwat qualified to write on teh question as to what becomes of old newspapermen, I need not go beyond the range of my own knowledge of the Columbus field to throw some light on the answer. And the matter is much easier of determination that is the query as to what becomes of old razor blades, for instance. Once upon a time, before the World War, I was city editor of The Citizen. Robert H. Johnes was the managing Editor. Don K. Martin was a reporter. Robert Crew was my assistant. Deshler Dixon also was a reporter, while over on the Ohio State Journal Ed M. Tharp was handling the business column. Today we find Bob Jones is a public relations man for the Columbus Railway Power and Light Co. andallied interests. Don Martin is secretary for the Ohio Manufactuerer's Association. Bob Crew is trust officer for the Ohio National Bank. Dixon is a confidential man for Walter Heer in his political and printing business. And Ed Tharp is gernal manger of the Ohio Fuel Gas Co. An associate in news work in war days was James Louis Morrill, now vice president of Ohio State Univerisyt. I remember him putting off to cover Camp Sherman, rigged out in riding breeches and puttees. Odd how little in=consequential things stick in the mind. I am referring o the breeches, not to Mr. Morrill, who of course could not be inconsequential either as reporter or university vice president. Indeed, MR. Morrill was a very good reporter. Generally speaking, the answer as to what becomes of old newspaper men is that they become secretaries to something or other. Supporting this observation here is a list, probably far from comlete, of secretaries: George V. Sheridan, Ohio State Council fo Retial Merchants T.T. Frankenberg, Ohio State Restaurant Association C.E. Dittmer, Ohio retail clothiers. Robert A. Warfel, Ohio petroleum marketers. J. Hoyt Cummings, Columbus auto dealers Charles S. Nelson, Ohio State Medical Association C.H. Duncan, Ohio contractors F.L. McKinney, Ohio independent telephones David M. Auch, Ohio bankers Belford Atkinson, Ohio banks Hershey Mowery, Ohio hotels John A. Lloyd, Ohio insurance agents. Other former scribes include Jimmy Fusco, secretary to Congressman Kloeb of the Fourth District; Earl Baird, manager of the Press Club; Clarence Sullivan, who has made a reputation as the producer of pageants; Harvey miller, who went from sport writing to insurance selling; Harry Brandon, also an insurance man, and Cal Lyon, who is now interesting himself in Democratic national politics. There are many others engaged in various phases of publicity work, but this story is already getting too long. When I became a newspaper reporter some 30-odd years ago there was no such thing as a college of journalism. In those days a journalist was defined as "a newspaper man who carries a cane." Of all the old associates I have mentioned I believe only two - Morrill and Nelson- were products of a college of journalism. It may be noted that the former newspapermen I have spoken of are not doing so badly. Youngsters considering their future and noting that newspapers can employ only so many editors and so many reporters should also consider that every one of these fellows were good reporters or desk men (editors) before they ventured into other fields." DEATH NOTICES "Rochelle, Winfield S., age 89, at Reynoldsburg, Sunday. Survived by 1 sister, Mary Ann Hickman, a number of nieces and nephews. Civil War veteran and member of the Reynoldsburg F & AM. Funeral Tesday, 2 p.m. at the home. Entombment at the Renoldsburg Mausoleum by J.E. Grimes." Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [OHFRANKL] 1937 Columbus Citizen Newspaper recalls 1913 Flood
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ghoecampbell Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.franklin/18278/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In 1937 there was a horrible flood in Ohio. An article on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1927 in teh Columbus Citizen, page 3A, recalls the 1913 flood: "MEMORY'S TRICKY ON FLOOD HERE IN 1913; BUSEY'S NOTEBOOK TELLS THE REAL STORY" By Harry F. Busey (Who was city editor of The Citizen in 1913). "As reports of flood havoc along the Ohio come in, Columbus memory reverts to 1913. Memory is a tricky thing, and not always accurate as to detail, so I turn to an old notebook for the record as I briefed it there immediately after the Columbus flood tragedy. I find this story: 'On March 25, 1913, at 8:30 a.m. the Scioto River broke through it's earthen levees and inunated the west side from the river to teh asylum hill. For three days the west side was cut off from the east, north, and south sections of the city. 'Ninety-four lives were lost by drowning, 4000 houses flooded, 389 homes entirely swept away, and 20,000 persons homeless. Estimated value of flooded property, $25,000,000. 'The whole city of Columbus was without water for 20 horus, without street car service for two days, and without street lights for two weeks. Not a steam or electric train entered tor left the city for 36 hours and transportation service was crippled for weeks. 'Bridges at Broad, State, and Town streets were washed away. The Rich Street Bridge, condemned 15 years before, stood. (somewhat repaired and extended it is still standing and in service). 'Storage dam falsely reproted broken on the afternoon of March 26. This was the day 'the dam busted,' in later years giving the comic touch to the otherwise tragic story. 'The cause of the 1913 flood at Columbus was unprecedented rainfall on the watershed of the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers. In the period from March 23 to 27, total rainfall varied from 11.2 inches in Logan County and 10.6 inches in Marion County to 7.9 inches in Franklin County. So much for the notebook. Most of the west side escaped with a soaking from back water. The loss of life occured when the main flood current refused to take the big bend and cut across between the B & O Railroad and the asylum hill, taking out house after house and the fmailies marooned in them. Some of the bodies were later found as far down the river as Shadeville. When the flood came some West Siders fled to the Hilltop while others came east across the bridges. Families were separated. For three days there was noo communicaiton between the sections, except as came by word of mouth in some round-about way. During this time fathers who had to come to work uptown didn't know whether their families were safe or not. During these days The Citizen gave over pages to printing the locations of refugees so relatives might find them. There was no radio. Wireless telegraphy was being played with by amateurs. It was a Hilltop amateur ticking off a message to afriend on the east side of the river who got over first word of conditions on the Hilltop. Many tales of heroism and tragedy there were. One sticks in memory. It concerned a fmily named Underwood. As I recall there were seven or eight in the family. Rising waters forced them to the roof. Then the house floated away. It lodged against a tree and broke to pieces. The members fo the fmaily clung to the branches. During the night about half of them dropped off to their deaths. The rest held on, witnessing the deaths of the others, until rescue came. All this happened on what before and since is dry land. There was a loud cry for flood protection which, after much argument, resulted in teh wideening of the Scioto channel through the city and, incidentlly, in establishing the civic center." The only child living with them was James. Where James and Maria twins? They are both the same age. Anyway my guess would be she(Maria) died young. She should have been 13 then. She may be buried there(Cincinnati) if that is the case. James was not married in 1870 census so my guess is that he didn't marry as he died in 1876. Melinda could have remarried??? If she did she could be buried with Nathan but listed under a different name. Good luck Jim Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. "CHILD IS CRITICALLY HURT IN FALL FROM PARK SLIDE" "In a fall from a sliding board in Franklin Park, Saturday, Sylvia Hodge, 2, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. WIlliam Hodge, 524 Mt. Calvary Av., suffered a skull fracture and was taken to Mt. Carmel Hospital and later removed to Children's Hospital. The childs condition was reported as critical." "BOY'S BODY RECOVERED" "Findlay, Ohio, Sept. 1- The body of Edward Smith, 10, missing since Tuesday, was found floatin gin a quarry pool here today. Police believed he drowned while swimming." "Two Overseas Veterans Die in Plane Crash" "Lockbouren Officers' Trainer Ship Falls Into South Side Corn Field" "Two Lockbourne Army Air Base officers, veterans of 30 missions over enemy territory with the Eighth Air Force in the Euopean theater, were killed at 1:45 p.m., Saturday, when their dula controle AT-6 Texan trainer plane crashed into a corn field south of the C. & O. roundhouse near Parsons Ave. Names of the mean, both B17 instructors, were reported by Lt. col. Benjamin F. McConnell, acting LAAB Commanding officer, as Capt. wAlker R. Peck, Jr.,24, Sioux City, Ia., and 1st Lt. Donald M. Joy, 27, Tacoma, Washington. Next of kin have been notified. The single engine trainer plane, a few of which are operated from Lockbourne to enable instructors to accumlate single engine flying time, took off from the base at 1:40 p.m. on a routine training flight and crashed five minutes later. Because of the dual control, it could not be ascertained which of the officers was piloting the plane, according to LAAB officials who are investigating the crash. Wreckage of the AT6 Texan was strewn for a radius of a quarter of a mile and it was necessary to rip the cockpit apart to release one of the bodies. The other was thrown clear of the wreckage, the officer apparently having tried to use his parachute. Those who saw the plane before the crash agreed it was traveling at a terrific speed. Mrs. Elber Elkins, 2611 Parsons Av., sitting on the front porch at her home, said it seemed to dive into the cornfield. James Stimmell, 235 Dexter Av., who served with the AAF in North Africa, and George Egich, 607 Lewis Av., heard the plane as they sat on the former's portch and Stimmell predicted that from the sound, the plane was going to crash, he said. George Heitz, employed at Clickenger Airport, near the scene, said he watched the plane until it disappeared in teh cornfield and then from the top of the hanger he saw smoke rising in the field. Ed Enderle, transmitter engineer for WHKC and editor of The Sunday Dispatch's shortwave radio collumn, was among those who watched the plane's maneuvers before the crash. he and Lt. Carl Lang of Cleveland noticed it as they left the WHKC transmitter, located five miles south of the city limits, and were among the first to reach the scene of the craft. "We saw the ship apparentl stunting," Mr. Enderle said, "It was flying at a very high altitude, climbing and then diving. It had dived twice and then came out fo the third dive very slowlly, at an extremly low altitude and flying at a terrific speed, but it failed to straighten out. "There was no loud crash or explosion but from where we were, about half a mile awy, we could see a great cloud of dust." Wreckage of the all-metal ship was thrown over the field for more than a quarter of a mile, he said. Both Capt. Peck adn Lt. Joy served as B17 pilots with the 8th Air Force in England and both had recently completed the B17 instructors' course at lockbourne, Capt. Peck reporting there in June and Lt. Joy last January. Both held the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with Oak Left Clusters for combat missions. Capt. peck was the son of Maj. Gen. Walter R. Peck, AAF comomand pilot who recently returned to the United States after serving as commanding general of a B24 Liberator Wing with the 8th Air Force in England. His wife, Mrs. Mary C. Peck, resides in Columbus. Lt. Joy's wife resides at 349 E. Tulane Rd. and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wlliam D. Joy, live in TAcoma, Wash. Both bodies were removed to the Shoedinger & Co. Chapel."
