    1. Re: [OHFRANKL] Institution for the feeble minded
    2. Rickie
    3. I found this article on line that refers to a State Farm of the Feeble Minded at Orient, OH. It is about 13 miles s/w of Columbus. The old State Hospital (Lunatic asylum) in West Columbus was torn down years ago. The child could have been there. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9C0DE2D71E3EEE3ABC4C51DFB7678 389639EDE Rickie -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of shell Sent: Thursday, April 03, 2008 9:30 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [OHFRANKL] Institution for the feeble minded I found a child that I have been looking for in the 1920 census as an inmate of the Institution for the feeble minded in Columbus. Does anyone know if this place is still standing? Ours in Lima does not exist anymore but the T.B. Hospital still stands. I am wondering if their are any records of these children that were in this hospital and what happened to them or if they died their where were they buried? Looking for a Herman H. Hague b: 10-11-1899 but when he filled out his draft registration card in 1917-1918, they had his birthdate as March 21, 1900. There were 5 children in this family that were left to the childrens homes when their father and mother died within 3 years of one another. Supposedly no one took in the boys. They were sent to the Lima Childrens Home and the girls might have been sent to Sidney. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Hello Folks........I came across this today, even though it doesn't concern the counties I am sending this too, it concerns many photos of cemetery photos pre-date 1800's......I only looked at the first couple of pages and some are from Massachusetts. There are over 13,000 photos! I imagine they are from different states as well. 1. [OHFRANKL] seeking Will left by Samuel GARES, died June 1859 in Groveport, Franklin Co.
    2. K Steward
    3. Can anyone tell me where the best place would be to look for the Last Will and Testament for Samuel GARES, who died in Groveport in June 1859? He was a retired innkeeper - born PA, was on the first council when Reynoldsburg was formed, had an inn there in the 1830s and 1840s and then moved to Groveport? Samuel Gares and wife Louisa GARES were my gr-gr-grandparents. Kaye Gares Steward Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

    1. [OHFRANKL] Franklin Co Probate Court Death Records - 1873 - GARIS or GARES
    2. K Steward
    3. Just wondering if there is any chance that some kind soul on the list would be going to a library or archive where the Franklin County Probate Court Death Index records and the Columbus, Ohio Board of Health records are available any time in the near future? If so, I would really appreciate having someone (who is already planning to go there) check a death record for a lady who could possibly be my gr-gr-grandmother. In the Franklin County OH Probate Court Records for 1873, Vol. 1, page 70, there is a lady listed - indexed as "Garet, Lovina". I would like someone to look at the actual record - and also at the Columbus, Ohio Board of Health records to see if "Lovina GARET" could possibly really be "Louisa GARES". And if there is any evidence found at all for a Louisa Gares - I'd be absolutely thrilled! I know I'm grasping at straws, but it seems to me that a transcription error could account for "Garet, Lovina" really being "Gares, Louisa" - and 1873 and 1875 can be confused if the '3' and the '5' aren't written carefully. The gravestone in the Groveport Cemetery, Franklin Co, for 'my' Louisa GARES clearly says she died June 27, 1875 at age 77 - but gravestones have been known to contain errors too! She is buried there with her husband, Samuel Gares, who died in 1859. Groveport newspapers for those years are no longer available, and there is no record of her death or burial in the Canal Winchester papers of the era. We don't have a birth record for her either, so can't confirm age that way. Previous research done by OHS research staff indicates they were unable to find her death record in either the 1875 Franklin County Probate Court Death Index or the Columbus, Ohio Board of Health records for 1875, so I'm expanding my search for her. I've never been able to find my Louisa Gares in the 1870 Census either - except another 'possible' in Fairfield County, OH. There is a Louiza JAVIS, almost the right age, listed the 1870 Census for Clearport, Amanda Twp, Fairfield Co., living with Wm and Eliza White and their daughter Olive. I have no info about a connection between the GARES and WHITE families, but I'm thinking that poor handwriting and indexing could easily make "Louisa GARES" into "Louiza JAVIS" -- or difficult pronunciation could account for the variation in surname. Any info, assistance or insights for further research would really help me solve this long-standing gap in my info about my gr-gr-grandmother. With thanks in advance, Kaye Gares Steward Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

It has been a busy week and now the children are literally at my feet. Life! I did see your info. It is very sparse, nothing but dates. I see that your sister was adopted before you. I have heard there are large reals of old files but have not had time to pursue it. I spoke with someone who has worked in records for 29 years. She does not remember everything but said in the past every so often she was required to purge the records. She had to archive them and send them off. She thought it was to the historical society but is not sure now. I will talk to the last supervisor of records next week fo hopefully more info. She said earlier in her career with FCCS she was would make dates and notes on cards when a child was moved, etc. Then when the child was adopted, a different color card was made and sent on. She does not know what happened to the other info. I am an organizer at heart. I wish they could pay me what I make now to just sort throught things, get them organized, and give a voice to everyone. What a dream. Do you think there are records of the children from Hannah Neil? They must be at the archives. I shall phone them as soon as I can. This has been such an emotional journey for me....to face how very disfunctional my family has been since the 1880's is tough. It makes me feel like I have been chosen to turn theis line around. Grandious? Maybe.
