    3. Many thanks, Linda - I appreciate your review of the Ohio Index to Estates Vol. 1 1801-1897 for me. My Samuel GARES was a business man in Reynoldsburg for many years, and died fairly young and unexpectedly (injuries in a fall) so I really hoped (expectedly, really) that there would have been a probate record. Your suggestion to try deed indexes is a good one - I'll certainly give that a try. Thanks again, Kaye -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: April 9, 2008 7:54 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [OHFRANKL] seeking Will left by Samuel GARES, died June 1859 in Groveport, Franklin Co. Hello Kaye, I live in California but I have several Franklin Co., Ohio microfilms on indefinite loan at a Family History Center near me. I checked FHL film # 9093761 - Franklin Co., Ohio Index to Estates Vol. 1 1801-1897 for you. This includes Testate (left a Will) & Intestate (no Will) Probates. I looked through the years 1859-1880 and did not find an entry for a Samuel Gares/Garis or Louisa Gares/Garis. You might check into land records. I have a case where the surviving children were all adults (no grandchildren of a deceased child to worry about), and the children just got together and jointly sold the property. It looks like there are two Family History Centers in Edmonton. If you can get to either one of them, you can order the microfilm of the deed indexes there. You would be looking for a "and others" or "et al" deed. 1. Re: [OHFRANKL] Franklin Co Probate Court Death Records - 1873 - GARIS or GARES
    2. K Steward
    3. Thank you so much for this extensive information, Linda. Your kindness went well beyond what I anticipated I might receive, and both confirms some of what I had and provides clues for further research. I am very grateful for the time, resources, and expertise you used to do this detailed research to help me. Also - I very much appreciate receiving specific references to the sources you searched. Its very helpful to know what resources have already been used. As a testament to your hard (and smart) work, and just in case someone else is researching this family, here's some feedback on the results you've located, (and against usual practice, I am keeping your message attached to mine, so the info is complete in one message): (1) Knowing more about Lovina GARET eliminates her and that death record as a possible death record for my Louisa GARES - and at this point, even eliminating a possibility feels like progress! Thanks! (2) While I'm not aware that any of our family ever lived in Sabina, we do have a William and Victoria GARES in our immediate GARES family - so you may have found a missing piece of our puzzle! Victoria Campbell married Wm. Long Gares (my grandfather's brother) and info received from a distant cousin said that they had six children between 1877-1891 - of which 3 lived (Warren, Evalena and Mabel). The names and timeframe for the GARES death 1879, daughter of Wm. and Victoria, could fit with this info, so it's possible that you have located a death record for one of the little ones that this couple lost. That opens the door to more research in a new county for me. I have a 1925 clipping from the Columbus Dispatch which says that Wm. Gares "practiced his [dentistry] profession for half a century, 40 years of which he has spent in his offices at 85 North High Street." - which makes me wonder if the 10 years he was not practicing in Columbus could have been in Groveport (where he and Victoria were born) or in Sabina, which was not all that far away. (3) Because Louisa GARES is buried in Groveport with her husband, and there has never been any hint of a 2nd marriage after her husband Samuel died 1859, I haven't considered a possible second marriage, but I do know that one should always consider all alternatives and options, so thanks for thinking to check for a marriage record for her. If the "Louiza JAVIS" listed the 1870 Census for Clearport, Amanda Twp,Fairfield Co. is ever proven as my Louisa Gares, I may find a death record for her in Fairfield Co. (4) The COURTRIGHT connection is a definite 'hit' for our family history, and you have the family connections worked out correctly. Snyder GARES (my gr-grandfather's Edmund's brother) married Rebecca ROBERTS in 1852, and after he was widowed sometime between 1870-1877, he married her sister Catherine ROBERTS in 1877. Snyder had 4 children with Rebecca - 3 of whom lived to adulthood (Charles Preston, John, and Georgeanna, who married a BOCKWAY). He and Catherine had no children of their own. Maria ROBERTS COURTRIGHT, who married John COURTRIGHT in Fairfield Co, was their sister, and when she died, she named her sisters Rebecca and Catherine among her heirs - and since Rebecca had died earlier, that meant Rebecca's 3 children were included in the probate of Maria's will, along with other ROBERTS descendants. I have been able to trace Georgeanna Gares Bockway through to almost the year of her death, but I've never been able to find out what happened to Rebecca's sons - Charles Prestion and John. The last record I have for them is in the 1891-92 Columbus city directories - and then they vanish! Still looking for them! Again - thanks for all your help from a grateful genie from far away from Ohio, Kaye Steward - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: April 9, 2008 9:03 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [OHFRANKL] Franklin Co Probate Court Death Records - 1873 - GARIS or GARES Hello Kaye, In addition to the probate index I have the indexes to Franklin Co., Death records 1867-1908 and the death records. I looked up the Lovina GARET in Vol. 1, page 70. The name is indeed Lovina GARET/GARRET and the information was as follows: Report of deaths in Marion Twp. dated 1873 June 15 GARRET, Lovina; died 1873 Feb. 22; died in Marion Twp., status Married, age 29yrs __mo 4d., born in Marion Twp., Cause of death Dropsey. These death records from 1867 to 1908 were county records and consisted of reports made once a year. They are not like death certificates and I don't think the Board of Health has records for this time period. The counties were also reporting births in the same time period in the same way and I am sorry to say that there were a lot of births and deaths that were not recorded. The Madison Twp. 1875 Deaths report was dated June 3rd so if Louisa died in Madison Twp. on 22 June, her death would be in the 1876 report if it was recorded in Madison Twp. I looked throught the 1876 deaths for Madison Twp. and there were no GARES/GARIS entries. I tried the index next and the only GARES/GARIS entry I saw was for a _____ GARES recorded in 1881 (Vol. 1, page 151): Report date 1881 May 22 GARES, _______; Female, died 1879 July 15; died in Sabina, O.; status Single, age 2(wooops - yrs, mo, days?), born Sabina, O., Father William GARES & Mother Victoria, Cause of death ?Hurt? in Birth. Sabina is in Clinton Co. I also tried FHL film # 0285140 - Index Franklin Co., Ohio marriage index by brides 1803-1897 to see of Louisa had a second marriage. No entry for a Louise/Louisa GARES/GARIS between 1859 and 1875. You mention Fairfield Co. here and also posted to the Fairfield Co. mailing list. I tried the Index to Wills, Estates, Guardianships and Partitions Fairfield County, Ohio 1803-1900. No GARES/GARIS. The book Partition Record Abstracts Vol. II 1851-1900 Fairfield County Ohio has some GARIS people mentioned in the Partition record for land owned by John COURTRIGHT who died Oct 16, 1878. They appear to be heirs of John's Widow, Maria, but not John. Their names are Catharine GARIS, a sister of Maria (?ROBERTS?) COURTRIGHT, wife of Snyder GARIS of Columbus; Rebecca GARIS, a sister of Maria (?ROBERTS?) COURTRIGHT, whose heirs were Charles P. GARIS of Columbus, and John GARIS of Columbus. I have the microfilms for Fairfield County, Ohio death records 1867-1909 but did not have time to try that today. First did you check the Greenlawn records online to see if you could find Emerson as a father of a married woman? Second, are these Pattersons related to the Pattersons in Hardin Co., OH? There are a couple of Pattersons who married into Dardinger lines from there. The farthest I've been able to go back is that this group descends from a Robert Allen Paterson b 24 Jun 1826 in Highland Co., OH. What especially interests me is that one of these Dardinger lines is from one of my own Stephen Dardinger's children while the other is from a Jacob Dardinger who lived in Hardin Co., but which I can't join with my Stephen so far. I expect the Patterson connection indicates the two Dardinger lines are related, but I need to find a Patterson correspondent who might know something abut the situation. The problem is that Jacob and his wife both died between 1865-1870 leaving several minor children and apparently the connection didn't extend to Stephen taking in any of the children. But one, Adeline, married Joseph S Patterson son of Robert Allen. Meanwhile Joseph's sister Elizabeth Ellen married William McElroy and their son Frank McElroy married Anna Belle Ropp, daughter of Mary Anne (Dardinger) Ropp, daughter of Stephen Dardinger. If this connects to your Pattersons anywhere let me know and I'll send you more details. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: JulsGo Surnames: Arbogast and Patterson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.franklin/18305/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello everyone. I am looking for information on the Patterson family. Bessie Arbogast married Emerson J. Patterson. In the 1910 census, Emerson and Bessie are living in Mills, Tuscarawas County, Ohio with no children. Emerson is 25 and Bessie is 23 years old. In the 1920 census, they are still living in Mills, Tusc Co. with 4 children: Raymond, age 8; Mary, age 6; Grace, age 4; and Ruth, age 2. In the 1930 census, they are still in Mills. Emerson is 46, Bessie is 43, and George R., is 19. None of the girls are listed in the household. There is a slight chance that Mary is married as she would be 16 or 17 but at age 14 and 12, Grace and Ruth would not be married. I looked at the Ohio death index and also on familysearch labs for a death certificate and can not find anything. I received an obituary for George Raymond Patterson and no siblings nor were his parents mentioned. I talked to a nephew of his and he knows nothing on any siblings of George R. He is a nephew from George's wife side. Bessie died in 1946 and Emerson died in 1953. She died from suffocation from drowning and he died in an accident. These both happened in Franklin County where they moved to at some point. If anyone has any information on the daughters of Emerson and Bessie I would appreciate it. Thanks for your time and help. It is greatly appreciated. Juls Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
