Armstrong was not listed in Adam's pension application or in the family history I found in the Fayette County Library in Washington, CH. Was Adam his father as listed in the 1914 History of Fayette Co., OH and if so was Adam's first wife Armstrong's mother? Or, is Armstrong not related to Adam at all. Another question about Armstrong-why weren't he and Jane McHenry, his wife, buried in the same cemetery? Thank you for any help!
Posted on: Fayette Co. Oh Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Fayette/110 Surname: Adams, Holdren ------------------------- I am trying to find more information on one of my great grandfathers, William Adams, who, at the age of 42, enlisted in Company K, 90th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served with the unit until his discharge on June 13, 1865. I note that on the day of his enlistment, August 1, 1862, one Phillip C. Adams, age 37, also joined the same unit. I have no further information about Phillip C. Adams, but I wonder if he might have been a brother of William. Both were of relatively advanced years for enlisting in an infantry regiment. Does anyone have information on either of these men. All I know of William is that he was born in Ohio, possibly in Ross County, in 1820, and married my great grandmother, Mary Holdren, on September 12, 1844, possibly in Clarksburg in Ross County. By the time of the 1850 census, William and Mary Haldren, were living on a farm in Wayne Township, Fayette County, Ohio. By the 1860 census they had moved to a farm in Paint Township, also in Fayette County. Sometime after the Civil War, they moved to Benton County, Missouri. William died there on August 26, 1884, Mary in October, 1897. They had at least five children: Mary Josephine, Wesley, Jane, Millie and Nathaniel. One thing more: The 1840 census for Ross county, Ohio shows that a Holdren family and an Adams family may have been living on adjacent farms. Heading the Adams family was an Emanuel Adams, while the head of that Holdren family was either an Enoch or Archibald. The census records are unclear on that point. But I speculate that when whey were young, William and Mary may have been neighbors. Does any of this ring bells with anyone? I would appreciate whatever information I might get on these families. In this month's Ohio Civil War Genealogy Journal (Vol IV No.4) page 176: JACOB STRALEY, 2nd Colorado Calvary, Company K. Contributed by Bonnie I. WALLACE, 7374 Boroff Road, Van Wert, Ohio 45891-9644. "This is a short article about my great-grandfather, Jacob STRALEY, who served in the War. This material is from a family booklet I wrote and distributed at the Jacob and Mary STRALEY reunion in 1993. Jacob and 5 of his brothers served in the Civil War. All returned home." "Jacob STRALEY and Mary Elizabeth SAYRE were married 28 June 1854 at Washington Court House, Fayette County, Ohio. There 1st child, Millard, born 16 May 1855. He died in infancy. Their 2nd child, Charles Elliot, born 18 August 1857, also died in infancy. Sometime between 1854 and 1860 they moved from Fayette County, Ohio to Nebraska. The obituary of Jacob's sister, Elizabeth STRALEY SHARRETT, may give a clue to that move. It says she and her husband, John B. SHARRETT were married in Fayette County, Ohio in 1850 and they located in Johnson County, Nebraska near Tecumseh in 1856. Tecumseh is about 30 miles southeast of Lincoln so the two families may have made the move together. The SHARRETTs were prominent in the early history-making of Johnson County, Nebraska. He died there in 1898 and Elizabeth died at the home of a grandson 3 miles east of Tecumseh in 1918." "Jacob STRALEY's Civil War records show that he joined Co. K, 2nd Regiment of the Colorado Calvary on 9 October 1862 for 3 years at Leavenworth, Kansas. He gave his occupation as a miner. Notations in the records in 1863, 1864, and 1865 state he was on extra or daily duty as a cook or baker. Meanwhile, Mary Elizabeth was alone with her young son at their home on the prairie. Many years later she told her granddaughter that provisions for her and her son were meager. There were times when she gathered wood and sticks to build a fire to cook a meal. When the Indians living nearby saw the smoke rising from her cabin, they knew a meal was being prepared. They waited an appropriate length of time and then paid her a visit and proceeded to invite themselves to partake of the meal she had prepared. They never harmed her, but she was very frightened by their bold intrusion." "It is not known when Mary Elizabeth returned to her family in Ohio with her little son Clinton. Daughter Lizzie was born in 1864 a year before Jacob was discharged from the service. It is possible she returned after she learned she was pregnant with Lizzie. Jacob was mustered out of the army on 23 September 1865 at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. He returned to Fayette County, Ohio after his discharge and he and Mary remained there until 1876. Three more children, William Hollis, Della and Chloe were born to them." "In 1876 they assembled their household goods and family in a wagon and moved from Fayette County to Jackson Township, Van Wert County, Ohio. It must have been a grueling trip as my grandmother, Della, sickened on travel, was never known to have left Van Wert County during the rest of her life. She died in 1937." Jacob and Mary Elizabeth completed their family with the birth of a daughter Florence in 1877 in Jackson Twp., Van Wert County, Ohio. Jacob was a farmer, but he was also a carpenter and contractor. When several of the fram and log schoolhouses in the township were replaced by brick structures, Jacob was enlisted to build the new buildings." "An item from the Van Wert Times notes that a very enjoyable day was spent at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob STRALEY, in Wetzel, on Monday, 20 June 1904, it being the 50th anniversary of their marriage. All of their 6 living children were present and 32 of their 33 grandchildren. There were 51 persons in all to partake of the bountiful feast prepared for the occasion. After dinner the crowd was photographed by C.D. Duvall of Delphos, Ohio." As a side note to the above article, the other STRALEY brothers to serve in the Civil War were: Samuel, James, George, and Joseph Eugene (my great great grandfather). They were the sons of Joseph STRALEY and Elizabeth HAMILTON. Joseph was the son of George STRALEY and Elizabeth BONNETT.
