    3. Posted on: Fayette Co. Oh Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Fayette/146 Surname: MARINE, ROSS, TOBIN, SPERRY ------------------------- Armstrong Allen married Jane McHenry in Madison County and then later came to Fayette. I would look in Madison County for his father, as the Allen family has been researched here quite a bit. There is no proof of a connection between Adam and Armstrong. There is a Probate File here in the Fayette Archives for Armstrong and it lists his wife and 6 of his eight(?) kids. I say this with a question mark as earlier in the file it states he has eight minor children, but later, only six are named. Mrs. Shaper, the other employee here, tells me that all the sons of Armstrong served with the same unit in the Civil War, but the actual unit escapes her. Also, she tells me that the Clark County Gnealogical Society, some time ago, did a feature article of Adam. That might be a good place to research. Write to the Clark county GS for a copy of hte article. In the Probate of Armstrong's estate, there is a debt mentioned that was owed to him by Aaron Allen, and he IS Adam's son, but again, there is no proven connection. Last, the reason that Jane and Armstrong are buried in two different cemeteries is because Armstrong died young and was buried in what is now called the Old Jeffersonville Cemetery. Simply put, the cemetery got full and they started burying people in the "New" Jeffersonville Cemetary. Jane died several years after Armstrong and they couldn't be buried together. She is buried in the Jefferson/Jasper Township Cemetery. This cemetery is also called the Koontz Cemetary.

    2. I am coming to this late, who are you looking for in Fayette Co? I ordered the Fayette county land records at the local family history center. I suggest you order the index too. I was looking for land that was given to Benjamin Walker who was the aid de camp of washington for a year and was an aid of vonSteuben. VonSteuben received this land after the revolution and died shortly thereafter and willed his land to Benjamin Walker and a man by the name of North. I found the land records in these rolls. 3. Posted on: Fayette Co. Oh Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Fayette/142 Surname: MARINE, TOBIN, ROSS, SPERRY ------------------------- Fayette County was part of the Virginia Military District, which was land given to soldiers from VA for service to the US government. George Washington was a purchaser of land in the VMD, as was John Quincy Adams and his wife. I would make the suggestion that you do a search of land grants at the Bureau of Land Management, to see if any of your names crop up. Most people assume that it is for service in the Revolutionary War, but soldiers form the War of 1812 also got land grants. There is also an excellent book that is available for free from the State Auditors Office called Ohio Lands. it gives a fascinating history of how Ohio was formed and it has some good information for those researching in Ohio. the links are as follows: Bureau of Land Management: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/search.asp State of Ohio: http://www.auditor.state.oh.us/ Ther eis a link for the Ohioi Lands book there. You can download and print it yourself or you can e-mail the auditors office and they will send you a copy.

Was your relative a resident of Fayette County or did he live in Clinton County? The reason I ask is because there is a town in Fayette County that is also part of Clinton called Sabina. Your descendant might be from there. I'm going to see if I can find any Fayette records here, like a Probate file, maybe. Will let you know.

Oh Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Fayette/134 Surname: HAGERTY, CROOKS, HICKSON, O'BRIANT, IVERS ------------------------- I am looking for any information (not listed below) on my father's extended family(s). Dad's family lived in Washington Courthouse beginning around 1900. They were shoemakers and I believe that I saw something in an old city directory about The Hagerty Shoe Co. Michael HAGERTY b. 1861 (death?) was the second of four children of Patrick HAGERTY(death?) and Mary (maiden name?). Michael moved his family(wife Lillian (IVERS?) and three (?) children) from Cincinnati to Washington Courthouse between 1900 and 1910. Michael's second child, John b.21-Feb-1889, d.18-Jan-1961 (Toledo) was my "grandfather". Grandpa John may have been married to someone named Inga (maiden name?) who died right before he married my grandmother (who preferred "Mimi" and always fibbed about her age) Dorothy CROOKS HICKSON (sp?) b. 12-Oct-1904, d. 15-Jan-1972 (Toledo). Mimi had a child, Richard b.29-Jul-1928 (in Wash. Crthse.), d.20-Jun-1987 (my father) from a previous marriage to someone named HICKSON (complete unknown). Michael also remarried, in the 1920s after Lillian's death, to someone named Estelle (?) and according to aunt Ann (dad's sister) they also had a son named Richard.

    3. We would like to invite you to visit The POORHOUSE STORY website (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses)at http://www.poorhousestory.com Thanks to many of the Ohio "listers" who volunteered to do the transcribing, we have a Holiday Gift. For history fans and genealogy buffs alike ... we think you will enjoy these. Here is a description: --------------------------- During the 1930's and 1940's the Work Projects Administration (WPA) began the process of inventorying County Archives of Ohio. Their work was cut short when funding elapsed prior to World War II, but several volumes were published. The Columbiana County edition states: "The inventories produced by the Historical Records Survey Program attempt to do more than give merely a list of records--they attempt further to sketch in the historical background of the county or other unit of government, and to describe precisely and in detail the organization and functions of the government agencies whose records they list. The county, town, and other local inventories will, when completed, constitute an encyclopedia of local government as well as bibliography of local archives." ... While these records may no longer be stored in the vault, it is proof that they did exist at the time the book was compiled. It may take some digging, but chances are good that the records can be found. The WPA Inventories were never totally completed for all counties in Ohio. ... They are unavailable today except in most major Ohio libraries, where a complete set will usually be found. page 60 OHIO GENEALOGICAL GUIDE 6th Edition by Carol Willsey Bell, C.G. --------------------------------- Note: Of the 27 counties whose WPA Inventories included Infirmary (poorhouse)records ... we have just posted the excerpts from 8 of them and are working on the others.
