Michigan has an online virtual library captioned "Making of America," featuring books, journals, etc. from the 19th Cent. Each book, journal, article, whatever, has been scanned in its entirety. Each page is a separate GIF image, which makes it a bit slow in browsing, but if you have the time and the computer power, there is some interesting reading to be had. URL is http://www.umdl.umich.edu/moa/ This site has a search engine you can type in your surnames and see what comes up. I know there is a Hawes, George W. Ohio State Gazetters' Business Directory 1860-61 among the collection. Lots of good info including military information.
